And the past two weeks have seen Nawrocki have to vehemently deny claims he had contacts in the criminal underworld and that he got prostitutes to pretend to be guests at a luxury hotel. But his campaign team were forced to admit that the new Polish leader did in fact engage in a bare-knuckle mass brawl between rival football hooligans. While his liberal opponent Rafal Trzaskowski played up his European credentials, Nawrocki met Donald Trump at the White House and received the US President's backing. read more news VOTE SHOCK Putin dealt blow in 'Super Sunday' of votes after shock result in election Unlike other eurosceptics in central Europe like Hungary's Viktor Orban, Nawrocki supports giving military aid to help Ukraine in the bloody war with Russia. But he also revealed prior to his win that he will oppose membership in Western alliances for Ukraine. This view aligns with the falling support among Poles for Ukrainians, with the country having hosted more than a million refugees from across the border. His backers in the Law and Justice (PiS) party had supported fast-tracking membership in the EU and NATO for Kyiv while in power until late 2023. Nawrocki's critics said he was fuelling unease over Ukrainian refugees at a time when the far-right is highlighting migration, the cost of living and security. He cited his campaign slogan, Poland First. "Let's help others, but let's take care of our own citizens first," he said on social media in April. Nawrocki's past has been a topic of intense public debate following a series of negative media coverage. Robert Prevost elected as Pope Leo XIV - the first from North American There were questions over his acquisition of a flat from a pensioner -and even an admission that he took part in orchestrated brawls. Nawrocki, an amateur boxer, told a debate when confronted over reports he had been involved in mass organised fights between football hooligans: "All my sports activities were based on the strength of my heart, the strength of my muscles, my fists. "It was a fair competition, regardless of the form." His Law and Justice party backers have accused the government of orchestrating the controversies with the help of Poland's special services and liberal media. Nawrocki portrayed the election as a referendum on the government, which he described as a metropolitan elite out of touch with their concerns. "I am simply one of you," he told voters in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska while on the campaign trail. More to follow... Liz Truss helps boxer who beat up pensioner to launch whiskey in bizarre video

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Liz Truss joined a bare-knuckle fighter at the launch party for his new whiskey brand – and mimicked the ex-convict's catchphrase in an Instagram video. The former Prime Minister was filmed holding up a bottle of Dougie Joyce's spirit as he told his followers: 'Just remember, Dougie Joyce loves ya.' She adds sheepishly: 'Liz Truss loves you.' Truss's appearance came just months after Joyce, who once boasted he was the 'next Tyson Fury', was released from prison after he beat up a 78-year-old man in a pub in November 2022. A police officer said after his sentencing: 'Joyce is an aggressive and violent man who intended to intimidate and inflict pain on a vulnerable 78-year-old man by carrying out this horrendous assault. 'Joyce was wearing a large gold pyramid-style ring when he punched the man in the face, causing him significant injury due to the size and shape accelerated by force and the series of punches he endured.' Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sign up here. He was jailed again in May last year after getting involved in a fight with a rival family at a wake. Tagging Truss in an Instagram post, Joyce wrote: 'It was a great honour to have former Prime Minister Liz Truss as a special guest at my event. 'Her presence was a tremendous support, and she took the time to speak about the future of business and the steps we can take moving forward.' He added that she 'added a distinguished touch to the occasion'. Truss served a memorably brief term in Number 10, lasting just 49 days in the second half of 2022 before she resigned over the reaction to her radical mini-budget. At last year's general election, she was among the highest-profile Conservative MPs to lose their seats. More Trending She has since been invoked as a symbol of economic mismanagement by current PM Sir Keir Starmer, most recently in an attack on Nigel Farage. Starmer labelled the Reform leader 'Liz Truss 2.0' over his plans to cut taxes and make benefits more generous. Truss herself has not ruled out making a political comeback and has recently styled herself as a supporter of hard-right causes around the world. At the weekend, she appeared alongside Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the CPAC Hungary event in Budapest. Police clash with PSG yobs at Champions League parade on second day of chaos

Paris Saint-Germain supporters clashed with riot police for a second night in the French capital, following the club's historic Champions League victory on Saturday. Riots erupted on the Champs Elysee on Sunday night as wild scenes around Paris St Germain's European Cup celebrations entered a second night. Crowds of supporters attacked police on the world-famous venue in the French capital on Sunday evening, as the PSG team took part in a victory parade following theirvictory over Inter Milan in the Champions League, reports the Mirror. ‌ "They are throwing everything they can at us," said an officer at the scene, as cops responded with tear gas and baton in a desperate bid to restore order. ‌ Gangs armed with bricks and metal poles - looted from nearby building sites - battled with gendarmes. Shocking footage showed cars caught in the crossfire, as terrified drivers were told to lock themselves in their vehicles. The violence came just hours after two people lost their life during intense nationwide violence following PSG being crowned European football champions for the first time in Munich, Germany, on Saturday night. ‌ One of the worst incidents took place in Dax, in the south-west of France, where a 17-year-old was knifed in the stomach. "He was part of a crowd celebrating the PSG win in designated fanzone, and died from his wounds in hospital' said a local police spokesman, without naming the deceased. An investigation is underway, and CCTV is being used to try and find those responsible.' Another man was also killed when his scooter smashed into a car in Paris on Saturday, after the victim was seen celebrating the football win. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Meanwhile, in Normandy, a police officer was seriously injured after a firework was deliberately launched at his face in Coutances. He remains in intensive care, placed in a coma with devastating head and eye injuries. The person who launched the firework attack - which has been reported as deliberate - has not yet been identified, according to an investigating source. In Grenoble, in eastern France, a car attempting 'a handbrake turn on a tram line' ploughed into a young family of four, severely wounding them. ‌ Three - including two women - were left fighting for their lives and the driver is now in custody. A total of 294 people were arrested for football -related violence and looting in Paris as France's Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, described trouble makers as 'barbarians'. ‌ Reacting to the disorder on X, Mr Retailleau said: "True PSG fans are getting excited about their team's magnificent performance. "Meanwhile, barbarians have taken to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement. I have asked the internal security forces to react vigorously to these abuses. ‌ "I offer my support to the Police Prefect and all the police officers who are ensuring everyone's safety this evening. It is unacceptable that it is not possible to party without fearing the savagery of a minority of thugs who respect nothing." The Champs-Élysées was locked down in a ring of steel, with stores boarding up windows and barricading entrances. However, that didn't deter looters from ransacking shops, including a Foot Locker and a Maisons du Monde furniture store, said a police spokesman. Masks thugs in hoodies were seen prowling the streets, while discared mattresses were set alight, sending thick black smoke billowing through the night sky. ‌ There was even fighting reported around the Eiffel Tower, which was lit up in PSG's red, white and blue following their 5-0 win. Around 5,400 police officers were on duty across Paris at the weekend, as trouble was always expected, whatever the result. PSG fans have built a notorious reputation for violence in recent years, with incidents against Arsenal and Aston Villa supporters during this year's Champion's League campaign. There was also trouble reported in Munich, where rival French and Italian fans fought each other. Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the PSG club president, appealed for calm on Sunday, as PSG took part in a victory parade in central Paris.
