M-E's Jack Hopko continues to impress with Atlantic 10's Rhode Island
Jack Hopko is once again a headliner. Against the Brown Bears, the Spartan turned Ram was a homerun off hitting for the cycle, as in four at-bats, he had a single, double, and triple, driving in the first runs of the game with said triple out to right center. He had 4 RBIs in the game, and would head home once as the third run after that triple.
Rhode Island would top Brown 16-6 in 7 innings.

Buoyed by quarterback's return, USF ready to take on daunting early schedule
It's either a gargantuan opportunity for the South Florida Bulls … or a cavernous hole that they will have to dig out of after the first three weeks of the 2025 football season. Here's why: USF's first three games are at home against Boise State, which went 12-2 last year and made the College Football Playoffs; and then on the road against Florida and Miami, who combined to go 18-8. But the Bulls aren't backing down. Alex Golesh, who has gone 7-6 with a bowl win in each of his first two years as USF's coach, said he is aiming much higher this year. 'Sometimes the progress made doesn't immediately show up in the record,' Golesh said at the American Athletic Conference Media Day news conference. 'But I'm proud of what we've built at USF, and I think we're ready to take the next step.' Golesh is thrilled by the return of quarterback Byrum Brown, who played just five games last season before he was lost to a leg injury. However, in 12 games in 2023, Brown completed 64.6% of his passes for a program-record 3,292 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. But what makes Brown even more dynamic is his elite running ability. In 2023, he led USF in rushing yards (809) and touchdowns (11). As for the rest of the team, USF's top running back is Cartevious Norton, a 5-11, 225-pound battering ram who has played two years at Iowa State (where he started seven games) and one at Charlotte. For his career, he has rushed for 1,180 yards, a 3.9 average and 12 touchdowns. USF's offensive line returns four starters, including pro prospect Zane Herring at right guard. The Bulls also added two experienced transfers. Keshaun Singleton — who came on late last season and finished with 26 catches — is USF's top wide receiver, and he gets high grades for his hands and his playmaking ability. Receiver, though, could be an area of concern overall. On defense, the Bulls are aggressive. They were solid against the run last year, but they were the second-worst AAC defense against the pass (279 yards per game). This year's defense will be led by veteran lineman Josh Celiscar, 23, a sixth-year player who is married with a daughter. In other words, he's a grown man, and he previously played for UCF and Texas A&M. Linebacker is the strength of the defense, including Mac Harris, who is ranked the fourth-best pro prospect in the AAC. In 2024, he led USF in tackles (82) and stops for losses (12). Other experienced linebackers are Jhalyn Singer; Rico Watson III; and North Texas transfer Chavez Brown. The kicker is Nico Gramatica, the son of Martin Gramatica, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay and also made the Pro Bowl in 2000. Nico, ranked the top kicking recruit in the Class of 2024, went 3 for 5 on field goals as a freshman last season. He will be the full-time starter this year. In total, the Bulls return six starters on offense and six on defense. 'It's all about developing players, building a team and finding a way to win,' Golesh said. 'We've put USF in a really good position.'

Long Island Nets Trade for Jordan Schakel, Give Up Kendall Brown
On Tuesday, the Long Island Nets announced that they have traded their returning player rights to 6'7' forward Kendall Brown to the Maine Celtics in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA G League Draft, and the returning player rights to 6'6' guard Jordan Schakel. The trade appears to be a way for the Nets to get some value for Brown who was waived by Brooklyn last season after an injury prevented him from playing for the NBA club as a two-way. Brown played for the Celtics in the Summer League and could be destined for an Exhibit 10 deal there. Exhibit 10s can be converted to either two-ways or G League roster spots but before that, the Celtics would have acquire his G League rights which were still owned by the Nets. There's also a question about whether Schakel, 27, will actually play for Long Island. He recently signed a contract overseas. Brown was an integral part of the Nets' offense for the better part of last season. Before his two-way deal and call-up with the Brooklyn Nets, Brown had become one of Long Island's 'hidden gems.' He averaged 16.4 points and had shooting splits of 57/41/75. A quick guard, Brown also made his presence felt by stealing the ball. 'Just coming in and being a guy that's consistent,' Brown told NetsDaily earlier in the season when asked what it's like to be Long Island's 'hidden gem.' 'Doing whatever I need to do to help the team win, and just being aggressive at the rim and just using my best abilities to score and make my teammates better, so that's where I can help.' The Long Island team acquired the rights to Schakel from the Maine Celtics. Schakel started his professional career in 2021. After going undrafted in 2021, Schakel joined the Golden State Warriors for the 2021 NBA Summer League and later played for Sacramento Kings Summer League squad and the Washington Wizards on a two-way deal with Capital City Go-Go before joining Maine. In college, Schakel took over the Mountain West Conference. He ranks third all-time in San Diego State history in career three-point field goals made with 225. He also holds the record for career free-throw percentage with 87%. The deal however may wind up being a paper transaction, at least in the short term. Schakel recently signed for next season in the Belgian League with Filou Oostende. The G League training camp opens at the end of October and opening night at Nassau Coliseum for Long Island is November 7. With five first round picks and a number of other young players expected to make the trek from Brooklyn to Long Island on a regular basis, the G League Nets should generate more interest than in a normal year.

Insider Sheds Light on AJ Brown's Chances of Facing Cowboys
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The season opener is around the corner for AJ Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles. Soon, the Super Bowl champions will be hosting the Dallas Cowboys, where they hope to pick up where they left off. Will AJ Brown be in the mix with the team at the start of the regular season? That will be one of the biggest question marks going into the game. Lately, Brown has been dealing with a hamstring injury. He's been in and out of the Eagles' practice sessions this summer. This week, Brown has been sidelined as the Eagles prepare for their final outing of the preseason. A.J. Brown #11 of the Philadelphia Eagles reacts during the Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp at NovaCare Complex on July 28, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A.J. Brown #11 of the Philadelphia Eagles reacts during the Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp at NovaCare Complex on July 28, 2025 in Philadelphia, chances of Brown playing in the Eagles' matchup against the New York Jets seemed low with or without the setback. The fact that he hasn't been suited up is pretty telling about his status. As far as Week 1 goes, the NFL Insider Mike Garafolo expressed confidence in Brown's availability for that matchup against the Cowboys. "I'm gonna say yes!" Garafolo said, predicting whether Brown would play or not. "Barring some setback, we've been telling you that there hasn't been a great concern about his status for Week 1. It's just making sure that they're not going to suffer some kind of setback." From The Insiders on @nflnetwork: #Eagles WR A.J. Brown is working his way back into action well ahead of Week 1. Barring an unforeseen setback, he's on track to face the #Cowboys in 16 days. — Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) August 19, 2025 The Eagles seem to be taking it easy with Brown for obvious reasons. Being that the star wide receiver is among the best at his position, he's critical to the Eagles' offensive success. Since he's a proven All-Pro, the Eagles don't need to see much out of Brown in training camp. Their best bet is to keep him off the field if he's not one-hundred percent for now. Brown landed on the Eagles following his 2021 run with the Tennessee Titans. He appeared in 13 games, catching 63 passes for 869 yards and five touchdowns during his final run with the Titans. Once Brown got to the Eagles, he instantly had a career year. In 2022, Brown caught 88 passes for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns in 17 games. During the 2023 NFL season, Brown followed up with 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns in 17 games. Last season, the Eagles' passing game took a bit of a hit. Struggles and a heavy dose of Saquon Barkley nearly prevented Brown from missing the 1K mark for just the second time in his career. However, he got it in 13 games. With 67 catches, Brown totaled 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns. Being in his prime, Brown remains a critical piece for the Eagles. The team hopes to have him on board for their first game of the season. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
