Copper strategy: India eyes sixfold rise in demand by 2047; Centre unveils plan to expand refining capacity
G Kishan Reddy
on Friday unveiled the government's Copper Vision Document, a blueprint aimed at preparing India's copper ecosystem to meet the expected surge in domestic demand over the next two decades.
The roadmap projects that India's copper demand will rise sixfold by 2047 and sets a target of adding 5 million tonnes per annum of smelting and refining capacity by 2030. It also outlines a multipronged approach including ramping up secondary refining, improving domestic recycling systems, and securing access to overseas mineral resources through global partnerships, according to PTI.
'Copper plays a critical role in our energy transition, infrastructure expansion and adoption of green technologies like electric vehicles and solar energy,' said Reddy, who holds the coal and mines portfolio.
He added that the document offers a strategic pathway to meet India's growing consumption needs while ensuring raw material security.
The launch took place at the International Conference on Sustainable and Responsible Mining through Best Mine Closure Practices hosted by the Indian National Committee of the World Mining Congress in Hyderabad.
The mines ministry said the document is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of achieving a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and marks a significant step toward building a sustainable, resilient and future-ready domestic copper industry.

US-India trade pact: Markets brace for July 9 tariff deadline; Q1 earnings, FII flows to drive sentiment
Representative image Equity investors are gearing up for a potentially volatile week as the 90-day suspension period of US President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs expires on July 9, raising uncertainty over India-US trade relations. Market experts believe that the outcome of the trade negotiations will be a key trigger, especially for sectors like IT, pharma, and auto that are sensitive to global commerce. Trump had imposed a 26 per cent additional import duty on Indian goods entering the US earlier this year, but enforcement was deferred for 90 days. As the deadline nears, traders are cautious, awaiting clarity on whether the levies will be fully implemented, renegotiated, or further delayed. 'This week holds significant importance not only for Indian markets but for global equities as well,' said Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research, Religare Broking Ltd, according to news agency PTI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'The most anticipated event is the outcome of the US trade (tariff) deadline on July 9, which could shape global trade dynamics. Investors will also closely monitor the release of the US FOMC minutes on the same day', Mishra added. Meanwhile, focus will also turn to corporate earnings, with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Avenue Supermarts scheduled to kick off the Q1FY26 reporting season. Their results are expected to set the tone for broader market sentiment. Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services, was quoted by PTI as saying that any favourable development on the India-US trade front could provide a fresh boost to investor confidence. 'Considering the broader indices are currently trading at elevated levels, market participants will closely watch for signs of earnings catch-up from upcoming Q1 results,' he said. Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal Financial Services added, 'Overall, we expect the market to remain in consolidation mode, awaiting clarity on the India-US trade deal, while stock-specific action would continue on the back of Q1FY26 business updates.' The past week saw the BSE Sensex fall by 626.01 points or 0.74 per cent, and the NSE Nifty declined by 176.8 points or 0.68 per cent. Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) flows are also expected to remain volatile. 'Resumption of FII buying will hinge on two things,' said V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist, Geojit Investments. 'One, if a trade deal happens between India and the US, that will be positive for markets and FII flows. Two, Q1 FY26 result indications. If the results indicate earnings recovery, that will be positive. Disappointment on these factors can impact the market', Vijayakumar added. Apart from these, investors are likely to track Brent crude price movements and rupee-dollar fluctuations, which could further impact trading dynamics through the week. "Multi-disciplinary centre being built to promote fusion of Tibetan, Indian ancient wisdom": Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan
Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 6 (ANI): Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan on Sunday extended birthday greetings to the Tibetan Spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Addressing the event celebrating the Dalai Lama's birthday here, the Union Minister said that a multi-disciplinary centre (Dalai Lama Centre) based on the Nalanda tradition is being built in Bihar's Bodh Gaya to promote the fusion of Tibetan and Indian ancient wisdom. The Dalai Lama Centre will provide an opportunity for people from all over the world to study his philosophy and vision, the Minister added. Union Minister Ranjan said, 'A multi-disciplinary centre based on the Nalanda tradition is being built in Bodh Gaya in my state of Bihar to promote the fusion of Tibetan and Indian ancient wisdom. It will provide an opportunity for people from all over the world to study your philosophy and vision and be inspired by your lifelong contributions.' 'I wish you a long and happy life. May your message resonate in the world and bring peace to countries and peoples suffering from conflict and discontent,' the Union Minister added. The 90th birthday celebrations of the 14th Dalai Lama are being held at the Tsuglagkhang temple in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, with Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh and other dignitaries. The dignitaries seated on the dais, along with the Tibetan spiritual leader, also included Hollywood actor Richard Gere. Monks, devotees, and international guests gathered for the celebration to honour the life and teachings of the Dalai Lama, who is widely regarded as a global symbol of compassion, non-violence and interfaith harmony. Meanwhile, Tibetan Buddhist monks living in exile offered special prayers at the Dorjidak Monastery near Shimla at Panthaghati this morning to mark the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. The occasion was marked by solemn rituals, long-life prayers, and symbolic offerings led by a young boy monk, Nawang Tashi Rapten, recognised as the reincarnation of the Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche, the head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The boy monk also cut a ceremonial cake as part of the celebrations, offering prayers for the spiritual leader's long life. The Dalai Lama, born as Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, in Takster, a small farming village in northeastern Tibet, was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. He was formally installed as the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet on February 22, 1940, and was given the name Tenzin Gyatso. The term 'Dalai Lama' is Mongolian, meaning 'Ocean of Wisdom'. In Tibetan Buddhism, Dalai Lamas are considered manifestations of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, an enlightened being who chooses to be reborn to serve all sentient beings. After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, the Dalai Lama assumed full political authority in 1950. He was forced to flee into exile in March 1959 following the violent suppression of the Tibetan uprising. He has since lived in India, along with over 80,000 Tibetan refugees, continuing to advocate for peace, non-violence, and compassion. For over six decades, the Dalai Lama has been a global ambassador of Buddhist philosophy, compassion, peace, and interfaith harmony, continuing to inspire millions worldwide. Celebrations were held across Tibetan settlements in India and abroad, with many also expressing hope that the Dalai Lama's lineage will continue through a recognised reincarnation in the future.
