Rejected by in-laws, supported by 'Jeevika': Begusarai's Neelu turns adversity into success

The Modi government's slew of schemes for women empowerment, and the firm resolve of womenfolk in general, are scripting a new success story for India, thereby inviting global attention.
The latest instance of this change is Bihar's Begusarai district, where Jeevika Yojana is changing the lives of women by enabling them to overcome adversities and become self-dependent.
Pachamba, a locality about 5 km away from Begusarai, has become a big centre of empowerment of the 'Jeevika Didi' yojana, with Neelu Kumari emerging as the face of this success.
However, Neelu's journey was not easy. She was beset with one of the biggest challenges after her marriage, and this is what laid the foundation for her inspirational journey.
Her husband was an alcoholic, and her in-laws kept harassing her, following which she returned to her maternal home. But now, with Jeevika's sewing house, she has not only become self-reliant but has moved up the ladder of success.
Neelu Kumari told IANS that she got married to Chandan Kumar Sharma, a resident of Asha toll village in Bhagalpur district, in 2010, and the groom's side duped their family by telling lies.
'At the time of marriage, Chandan Sharma's family members told me that the groom works in a tower installation company. But, after marriage, I got to know that he didn't work and also he was an alcohol addict,' she said.
She was not only beaten and abused by her husband but also tortured by the in-laws for not bearing a son after marriage. Her in-laws also did not send her two daughters to school for studies, and neither did they give them proper food.
Troubled by her in-laws, Neelu chose a different path and joined 'Muskaan Jeevika'.
Today, Neelu is an active member of the Jeevika programme and is doing sewing and embroidery work, thereby shaping the future of her daughters.
Neelu Kumari said that before joining Jeevika, she had to face financial difficulties, but today she is standing on her own feet.
Rather, she is not alone, the lives of hundreds of women like Neelu have completely changed after joining Jeevika.
Notably, Jeevika is a community-based organisation in Bihar, having around 10 lakh women self-help groups, thereby uniting approximately 1.24 crore women for Swachhata Hi Seva in Bihar. With women joining hands to reach out to villages for awareness generation and undertaking mass cleanliness activities, this marks a true reflection of 'Nari Shakti'.

MP road accident: CM Yadav announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for families of deceased

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Jhabua district on Wednesday. The victims were killed when a cement mixer truck overturned onto their van while they were returning home from a marriage function. CM Yadav announced the financial aid through his X handle, "The heartbreaking tragedy at Sajeli railway crossing in Jhabua district, where nine members of a single family lost their lives and two others sustained injuries, is truly devastating. Authorities have directed that financial support be extended to the victims' families, with Rs 2 lakh allocated to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured in the accident." The accident occurred in the early hours at around 3 a.m. near the Sajeli railway crossing in Jhabua district, under the Kalyanpura police station area. According to police, the driver of the concrete mixer truck en route from Thandla to Jhabua lost control while making a turn. Struggling to manoeuvre around an oncoming van, the truck collided with the smaller vehicle, dragging it several metres before overturning and crushing the passengers inside. Among the deceased were Mukesh Khaped, his wife Shavli, their son Vinod and daughter Payal. Others who lost their lives in the accident included Madhi Bamnia, Vijay Bamnia, Kanta Bamnia, Ragini Bamnia, and Jhkali Parmar. Miraculously, two passengers, Payal Parmar and Ashu Bamnia, survived the accident, reportedly shielded by the bodies of their family members. "They were rushed to hospitals in Dahod in Gujarat and Thandla for urgent medical care. The victims were returning home to Shivgarh Mahuda in Meghnagar tehsil after attending a wedding in Manpura village," Prem Lal Kurve, Additional Superintendent of Police, told IANS. Emergency response teams arrived promptly at the scene, transporting the deceased and the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was found at the site. Meanwhile, investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal incident. The driver of the cement mixer truck fled the scene, and efforts are underway to locate him. The accident has left the local community in shock, with further updates expected as the inquiry continues.

LoP's statement treasonous: Shahnawaz Hussain on Gandhi's ‘Narendra surrender' remark

New Delhi: BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain on Wednesday strongly criticised Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi for his remark that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had "surrendered" on US President's behest during 'Operation Sindoor', calling the statement "treasonous." At an event in Bhopal on Tuesday, LoP Gandhi alleged that PM Modi acted under foreign pressure during a military operation. "A call came from (Donald) Trump and Narendra ji immediately surrendered... history is witness to this. This is the character of the BJP and RSS," he said. He further mocked PM Modi, saying, "Narendra ji followed Trump saying 'Narendra, surrender' by saying 'yes, sir'.' Responding to LoP Gandhi's statement, Shahnawaz Hussain told IANS, "There is dignity in this country, but the Opposition is continuously undermining it. When it comes to national security, unity is essential. Rahul Gandhi has not just insulted the Prime Minister but also the valour of the Indian armed forces. This 'Narendra Surrender' comment is unacceptable." He emphasised that Prime Minister Modi had given the armed forces a free hand during 'Operation Sindoor', resulting in the destruction of nine terrorist camps, 11 airbases, and the killing of 100 terrorists. "The whole world celebrated India's strength, but Rahul Gandhi is questioning our armed forces. Even Pakistan never claimed that Indian forces surrendered, but Rahul Gandhi is making that statement. This is nothing short of treason," Hussain told IANS. Hussain further stated, "We are proud of our armed forces. The Prime Minister is proud. The Opposition and all Indians should be proud too. But instead, Rahul Gandhi is echoing Pakistan's rhetoric." Commenting on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's remark that the BJP had turned 'sindoor' into a joke and questioned whether it was part of a "one nation, one husband" scheme, Hussain responded dismissively. "He was a comedian before becoming a Chief Minister, and sometimes that still shows. When he meets the Prime Minister, he greets him respectfully, but otherwise, he speaks irresponsibly. No one takes him seriously," he concluded.
