Ahead of Shambhu stir, Punjab Police place farm leaders under house arrest, detain many

Time of India05-05-2025

Two days ahead of farm groups' plan to protest at Shambhu police station, Punjab Police on Sunday night swooped down on farm leaders, placing at least four of them under house arrest and detaining several others.
Farm groups Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had announced the protest over cops allegedly assaulting a farm leader on March 19-20. However, on Sunday night and later on Monday morning, personnel of Punjab Police started reaching the houses of senior farm leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, and placing them under house arrest.
The action had the stamp of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, who also issued a statement on X over protests that involve blocking roads and railways. "Any announcements, protests, or strikes in Punjab that involve blocking roads or railways or cause inconvenience to the general public and disrupt daily life will be considered acts against the public. All organisations and groups are advised to take note. There are other ways to express opposition, as troubling the people is not right. If violated, they should be prepared for strict legal action. Issued in the interest of the hardworking people of Punjab," said Mann.
Commenting on the midnight crackdown on farmers, Dallewal said the action was "unwarranted". "It is no less than a midnight assault on democracy. After a sustained struggle and fast, I am unable to even walk properly, yet I have been confined to my home. We only announced a day-long peaceful protest, but instead of taking action against those from whom stolen items have been recovered, we have been put under house arrest. It is time for people to speak out, or they will silence all our voices," he said.

Police also reached the residences of Manjit Singh Rai from BKU (Doaba), Sukhwinder Kaur from BKU (Krantikari), and Balwant Singh Behramke, and put them under house arrest. Some others, including Kulwinder Singh Panjola, Hardev Singh Chitti, Gurpreet Singh and Harvinder Singh Masaania, were rounded up and detained at different police stations, stated farm leaders. The action drew sharp criticism from other farmer organisations.
Sources in police said the action was taken as they were apprehending a large gathering at Shambhu again. In the past, Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had, on Feb 13, 2024, started protests at Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana to demand a legal guarantee on MSP. Though the farmers had wanted to march to Delhi, their way was blocked by Haryana Police. As the stalemate continued for 13 months and either side refused to budge, Punjab Police removed protesters at the two sites by force on March 19.
While these two protests ended, police were accused of misbehaving with farmer leaders, and stealing tractors and belongings of protesters. It was during this confusion that police were accused of a assaulting a farm leader at Shambhu police station. As part of the latest protest, farm groups wanted to protest at the same police station.
CM's message elicits another protest call
The CM's post on X slamming protesters has elicited another protest call, this time by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher. He has now called for disrupting rail traffic at Devidaspura near Amritsar on May 7 and urged other farm organisations to stand up against this highhandedness.

11 Years of Modi Govt: From tomorrow, Centre to spotlight G20, Operation Sindoor, pension reform and more

Operation Sindoor, the successful hosting of the G20 summit in Delhi, the evacuation of Indians from Sudan and Ukraine, and a surge in defence exports: these will headline the national security achievements to be showcased by the Narendra Modi government as it marks 11 years in office on Tuesday, The Indian Express has learnt. In addition, the government will highlight other flagship policies and decisions implemented since it assumed power for a third consecutive term last year. These include the Cabinet's approval of caste enumeration in the upcoming census to secure accurate data for policymaking, and the rollout of a unified pension scheme to provide assured pensions to central government employees. The inauguration of India's first vertical lift sea bridge—the Pamban rail bridge—and the clearance for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express are also part of the list. Also on the list is progress under several flagship schemes since returning to power in 2024: guaranteed income via MSP, a special national mission to boost domestic production of pulses and reduce import dependency, steady access to electricity in rural areas, and affordable urea for all, among others. According to officials, the broader themes of the government's planned campaign include: serving the poor and marginalised, infrastructure development, Nari Shakti, the northeast, farmer welfare, national security and foreign policy, and ease of doing business. Government schemes and initiatives will be grouped under these categories, with Cabinet ministers and Ministers of State expected to play a key role in messaging. Officials told The Indian Express that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) began collating major reforms, achievements, and initiatives from the last 11 years—as well as progress made since June 2024—as early as April, to design a creative campaign. I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju is learnt to have written to all ministries requesting relevant inputs for the campaign. Additionally, the I&B Ministry is learnt to have sought from other ministries a list of suitable locations for media tours to showcase the on-ground implementation of government schemes. According to officials, the tours aim to provide journalists an opportunity to interact with beneficiaries and other stakeholders, and to witness outcomes first-hand. The month-long media tours are intended to highlight success stories, innovations, and best practices in a bid to raise public awareness of the government's programmes and initiatives.

Espionage case: Punjab YouTuber Jasbir Singh sent to judicial custody

A Mohali court on Monday (June 9, 2025) sent Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh, arrested on espionage charges, to judicial custody. Mr. Singh was produced before the court after the completion of this two-day police remand. Post his arrest on June 4, he was sent to three days of police remand following which it was extended for two days. Mr. Singh's counsel Mohit Dhupar said he will be produced in court again on June 23. Jasbir Singh alias Jaan Mahal (41), who hails from Mahlan Village in Rupnagar District, was running a YouTube channel "JaanMahal Video" with over 11 lakh subscribers, ostensibly posting travel and cooking vlogs. He was alleged to be in close touch with Haryana-based influencer Jyoti Malhotra, who is in judicial custody on charges of spying for Pakistan. Mr. Singh's family, however, maintained he was innocent and claimed he was arrested despite cooperating with the police for over 10 days. On June 7, the YouTuber's counsel said Punjab Police summoned his client between May 17 and May 30. After Mr. Singh's arrest, Punjab Police claimed that it had unearthed a "terror-backed espionage network" linking him to Pakistani intelligence and army officials. Police said that the YouTuber was allegedly spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. Singh was found to be associated with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO), was in contact with a Pakistan High Commission official who was last month expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, police said previously. Mr. Singh was also found to be associated with Pakistani Intelligence Operative (PIO) Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa, part of a terror-backed espionage network. The accused travelled to Pakistan on three occasions, including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, police added. Investigations revealed that Mr. Singh attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. After Ms. Malhotra's arrest, the accused Mr. Singh reportedly attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection. Mr. Singh is accused of relaying sensitive information about the movement of the Indian Army and other inside activities of the country to Pakistan.

Espionage case: Hisar court extends Jyoti Malhotra's judicial custody

A local court on Monday extended the judicial custody of social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra and fixed her case's hearing on June 23. The 33-year-old YouTuber appeared before the court of Hisar Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Sunil Kumar through video conferencing on Monday which extended her judicial custody by two weeks. "The court has extended her judicial custody and fixed June 23 for the next hearing in this case," her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said. Hisar Police arrested Malhotra on suspicion of espionage on May 16. She was subsequently remanded to five days of police custody by the court. Following the completion of the remand, the court extended it by four more days on the police's plea for further questioning. On May 26, the court remanded her to judicial custody for 14 days. Malhotra, who hails from the city, ran a YouTube channel "Travel with JO". She was arrested at the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Hisar Police previously said no evidence had emerged to indicate Malhotra had access to any military- or defence-related information but claimed she was in contact with some people, aware that they were Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIO). Police sources said she was in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage. The police have claimed Pakistani intelligence operatives were developing Malhotra as an asset. Punjab Police recently said Punjab-based YouTuber Jasbir Singh, who was arrested on espionage charges on June 4, was in close contact with Malhotra. Singh, who was found to be associated with a PIO, was in touch with a Pakistan High Commission official who was recently expelled from New Delhi on charges of spying and had met Pakistan Army officials during one of his three visits to the neighbouring country, Punjab Police said previously. After Malhotra's arrest, Singh attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection, Punjab Police added.
