Hollywood star Anne Hathaway 'dreams a dream' of Arsenal glory

BBC News29-04-2025

Anne Hathaway - Hollywood star, and massive Arsenal fan?The actress - who has featured in films such as The Devil Wears Prada and The Dark Knight Rises - has revealed herself as a Gooner in recent weeks, filming TikTok videos of herself singing North London Forever. But it appears to be the whole Hathaway family who are behind Mikel Arteta's side, with Hathaway saying in one video: "The group chat is going off. 'Declan is the man of the day', I agree mum."The revelation has gone viral since she sang the Arsenal anthem after their 3-0 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
How long has Hathaway been an Arsenal fan?
It is unclear just how long Hathaway's love of the Gunners has been going on, but there is certainly evidence of it being more than a year.Last April, during an interview, external for her upcoming film The Idea of You she is seen alongside co-star and fellow Arsenal fan Nicholas Galitzine watching and celebrating a goal."One-nil, Trossard!" says Galitzine, before Hathaway adds: "Oh I love you", and then explains: "Sorry, we're both fans of the same team, and there's a match going on right now, and during our last interview they scored."The goal they were celebrating was Leandro Trossard's strike at Wolves in a 2-0 win on 20 April, 2024.That prompted Trossard to send a message to Hathaway, saying: "Keep supporting us and hopefully see you soon at the Emirates."
Has Hathaway been to an Arsenal game?
Despite Trossard's invitation to Emirates Stadium a year ago, it does not appear that Hathaway has managed to make the trip to Arsenal's home yet.In fact, prior to the casual revelation of her Arsenal support in the aforementioned interview last April, there is little indication on the internet to suggest she is an avid follower. But her support certainly seems to have intensified during Arsenal's run to the Champions League semi-finals.This month she revealed her delight at Bukayo Saka's goalscoring return from a hamstring injury, posting on Instagram after the 2-1 win against Fulham a picture of herself in an Arsenal shirt with the caption: "Welcome back #7"
From Crowe to Hanks - other Hollywood football fans
Hathaway is, of course, not alone in being a big-name Hollywood star supporting an English football team.Russell Crowe of Gladiator fame is a big Leeds supporter and part owner of the club. The Australian explained last year that he has been following Leeds since the 1970s, saying: "In the middle of the day you had either a gardening show, someone doing a yoga show, or Match of the Day."So we tuned in and watched Match of the Day and Leeds were quite a successful team in the early 70s."They were on the TV quite a lot and my brother chose Liverpool and I chose Leeds."Meanwhile, fellow actor Tom Hanks supports Aston Villa and has been seen at their games, while Catherine Zeta-Jones, star of Ocean's Twelve among other films, supports her hometown team Swansea City.In 2015 she filled her swimming pool at her New York home with swans to celebrate a win against Manchester United.

Patrick Stewart offers glimpse into how Rangers will approach first transfer window with Russell Martin and new owners

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PATRICK STEWART has described Rangers as a club with "unfulfilled potential" as he prepares for the first transfer window under a new ownership regime and management team. Russell Martin was confirmed as the Ibrox side's head coach on Thursday, following the arrival of Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy as sporting director and technical director. 2 Russell Martin and Patrick Stewart on the day Martin was unveiled as Rangers boss Credit: PA On May 30 the £90million takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises was finally completed after months of negotiations. An initial £20million of investment has been promised and a share issue will follow to help raise more funds. With the Light Blues in Champions League qualifying action on July 22/23 and 29/30, the summer rebuild must start soon. We looked at how Martin could transform Rangers, in particular by recruiting trusted former players. Gers chief Stewart acknowledged there is a lot of ground to be made up on Celtic in the league, but believes Martin has arrived early enough for them to make signings before the Euro qualifiers next month. Speaking in an interview with Rangers TV, he said: 'There is a lot of hard work to be done, just to be clear. I think there always is every pre-season for Rangers because the European qualifiers come so early, so let's not shy away from that. 'That said, we have got Russell in and the transfer window doesn't open for another ten days and the first team don't return for another two weeks, so actually you could look at it glass half full and say we have got him in well in advance of those two key events. 'But let's not kid ourselves, there is a lot of hard work to be done but I know Russell is determined to get stuck into that. 'The potential of Rangers, we know it is unfulfilled at the moment. 'This is a huge club and supporters, players, management and staff, we have all been frustrated at not having achieved the heights. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager 'It feels now though that we are making steps forward and new ownership is a massive step forward. 'My excitement and optimism levels have definitely increased but they were always there because there is so much that is positive about this club.' Stewart was asked how Martin's experience in both Scotland and England during his career will help them in the recruitment process. He said that combining Martin's knowledge with Thelwell's contacts book should lead to positive results in the transfer market. Stewart said that they will pay close attention to the Scottish and English markets, as players there will have an understanding of the British game. But that won't stop them from scouting players further afield - the only condition being that they must ALREADY be suited to playing in Scotland, rather than trying to mould them into the finished product. He said: 'Having an understanding of the Scottish game I would say is a key factor because every league is unique and we can look at some of the fixtures that have to be played as part of the SPFL. 'Every ground has its nuances and every club has its nuances, so somebody that comes in with an understanding of that is a huge asset. 'Equally, when it comes to recruiting players having a knowledge of markets outside of Scotland and players outside of Scotland, and off-the-pitch talent outside of Scotland as well, is a huge advantage. 'So yes, I think we are really fortunate to have somebody who has that Scottish background and also English experience as well." 2 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

'I went to Benidorm on holiday and couldn't believe cost of a pint'

A man, who is known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, recently headed to the popular holiday destination and was left gobsmacked by the price of a drink A Brit was gobsmacked by the cost of a pint in Benidorm, despite being a frequent visitor to Spain. Known amongst his TikTok followers as the Benidorm Fanatic, he recounts his visit to Uncle Ron's, a bar renowned for its affordably priced pints, where he found himself pleasantly surprised by just how much bang he got for his buck. In his popular video, he raves: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." ‌ Upon reaching the bar, he continued: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it." ‌ He enthusiastically shared his verdict, saying: "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." The video quickly gained traction, prompting viewers to share their impressions and even their own tales of Benidorm adventures. Among the comments, one user exclaimed: "Wow," while another who'd been there on holiday exclaimed: "I was there last week." Someone else who'd be there said: "Lovely pint. Had many." Whil a fellow TikToker simply added: "Bargain." Uncle Ron's, a hit with British holidaymakers in Benidorm, is famed for its budget-friendly tipples and hearty meals. ‌ TripAdvisor reviews boast of the establishment's offerings from breakfast through to dinner, with an average rating of 3.8 out of 5 on the platform, suggesting it's a must-visit for those seeking a decent meal and drinks while away. In the review section, one visitor commented: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." ‌ Another shared their experience: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third reviewer added: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"
