Dibrugarh: In a crackdown on insurgent activities, Assam Police have arrested 22 cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (Ulfa-I) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang Yung Aung (NSCN-KYA) from various districts of the state in July, inspector general of police (IGP), northeast range, Satya Raj Hazarika said on Monday.
Addressing a media briefing at Charaideo, Hazarika revealed that nine linkmen of the two militant outfits were also apprehended in Charaideo district in June. The operations were part of a sustained effort to curb subversive activities ahead of Independence Day.
"We have arrested 22 cadres of the Ulfa-I and NSCN-KYA from various districts this month. Last month nine linkmen of the Ulfa-I and NSCN-KYA were nabbed from Charaideo district", Hazarika said.
"Based on intelligence inputs regarding potential subversive activities by militant groups ahead of Independence Day, coordinated operations under the Unified Command — comprising Assam Police, Assam Rifles, and the Army — have been intensified, particularly in Upper Assam districts bordering Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Security forces are on high alert to ensure peaceful Independence Day celebrations, and we will not allow any disruptive activities," he said.
The IGP said the arrests were a result of meticulous intelligence gathering and swift action by security personnel. "These arrests have significantly disrupted the operational capabilities of these groups in the region," he added.
The arrests form part of a broader security sweep that began in June, when nine linkmen associated with Ulfa-I and NSCN-KYA were nabbed from Charaideo district alone. These linkmen typically serve as crucial intermediaries between militant groups and local communities, facilitating recruitment, logistics and intelligence gathering for underground organisations.
Charaideo SSP Surjeet Singh Panesar, who was also present at the briefing, added that the crackdown would continue.
"We are closely monitoring suspicious movements, especially in border areas. Our aim is to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents," Panesar said.
The heightened security measures come amid reports of militant groups attempting to escalate violence in the run-up to Aug 15.
Security forces have increased patrolling, set up checkpoints, and conducted raids in sensitive locations. With Independence Day approaching, Assam Police and allied forces remain on high alert, determined to thwart any attempts by insurgent groups to disrupt peace in the region.

Independence Day 2025: Wait, Is It 78th Or 79th? All Details Explained Here
As India prepares to celebrate Independence Day, a common question resurfaces: Will this be the 78th or the 79th celebration? The nation gained freedom from British rule in 1947, after nearly two centuries of struggle, countless sacrifices, and an unwavering determination to secure a life free from oppression. On Independence Day, India pulls out all the stops as the nation submerges in the tricolors and the patriotic songs echo through the land with each citizen filling up with a feeling of pride. It is a day to remember and honor the immense sacrifices made by freedom fighters, whose stories continue to inspire generations. Is it 78th or 79th Independence Day of India? The confusion over whether India is celebrating its 78th or 79th Independence Day stems from how the years are counted. While India gained freedom on August 15, 1947, the question arises: should that year be considered the first Independence Day, or should the count begin from the first anniversary in 1948? To clarify, India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day this year, as it marks the 79th anniversary of the country's freedom from British rule. A release from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has helped clarify the confusion. "As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15," said a PMO release dated August 1. As we approach this year's Independence Day, I look forward to hearing from my fellow Indians! What themes or ideas would you like to see reflected in this year's Independence Day speech? Share your thoughts on the Open Forums on MyGov and the NaMo App...… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 1, 2025 78th Independence Day of India Last year, a day ahead of Independence Day, President Draupadi Murmu said, 'I am delighted to see the nation prepare to celebrate the 78th Independence Day. Witnessing the tri-colour unfurl on this occasion, be it at the Red Fort, at state capitals, or in local neighbourhoods, always thrills our hearts. It is an expression of the joy of being part of our great nation, along with more than 1.4 billion fellow Indians. Just as we celebrate various festivals with our families, we celebrate our Independence Day and Republic Day with our family, which comprises our fellow citizens.' On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech on Independence Day, said that India aims to accelerate progress in every sector, focusing on three key areas, including creating new opportunities across all sectors, strengthening the supporting infrastructure required for evolving systems, and enhancing the basic amenities for our citizens. Meanwhile, the PM had also highlighted that less government interference in the lives of citizens is an important part of our vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Operation Sindoor and Chenab Bridge to feature on Independence Day invites
Independence Day invites from the Ministry of Defence for this year's Independence Day celebrations will have Operation Sindoor as the central theme, an official said on Monday (August 4, 2025). In another change, the Central Vista image embossed on the cards will be replaced by a sketch of the world's highest railway bridge that spans the Chenab river, which was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Posters and banners around the venue will also mention Operation Sindoor. Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. Security briefing A high level meeting was held at the Red Fort regarding the Independence Day celebrations. Security agencies have recommended bulletproof glass around the Prime Minister's dais, but the final decision is yet to be taken. This year more guests will be invited to attend the celebration. To accommodate them, more tiered seating structures have been prepared. 'Installation of anti-drone measures, a radar near the Red Fort, and the threat posed by unmanned devices were discussed in detail with the Army. The Ministry of Defence will be deploying an anti-drone system to prevent any aerial breach, and the Indian Air Force will be on high alert. Drones are among our key security concerns. We have also instructed vendors responsible for installing CCTVs around the venue not to use any Chinese equipment for surveillance purposes,' said an official.

Is It 78th Or 79th Independence Day? All You Need To Know
Independence Day 2025: India gained freedom from British colonial rule after a long struggle on August 15, 1947. The day is remembered for the freedom fighters and the common Indians who coalesced together and managed to snatch back the country from the Britishers. On this day, the prime minister takes to the ramparts of the Red Fort and hoists the tricolour, followed by a rousing rendition of the national anthem and an address to the nation. People organise cultural programs and seminars to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. While India prepares to celebrate its next Independence Day, a familiar question has resurfaced: Is it the 78th or the 79th Independence Day? Is India Celebrating The 78th Or 79th Independence Day In 2024? The discussion centres on two assumptions -- whether the day can be counted from August 15, 1947, the day India gained independence, or from the day it celebrated its first anniversary one year later. India will be commemorating its 79th anniversary of gaining independence if we count from the day of independence. However, if we calculate from August 15, 1948, it is the 78th Independence Day. According to the official channels, it is indeed confirmed that India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day. A letter by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), carried by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), has corroborated that the country will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day. "As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15," the letter stated. As we approach this year's Independence Day, I look forward to hearing from my fellow Indians! What themes or ideas would you like to see reflected in this year's Independence Day speech?
