EC appointment process change fuels doubts about fairness: Gehlot
2
Jaipur: Former chief minister
Ashok Gehlot
Friday raised questions about the impartiality of the
Election Commission
during a press briefing in Jaipur. Supporting Leader of Opposition
Rahul Gandhi
's allegations of 'vote theft', Gehlot said that the EC was working under the
BJP
's pressure.
Gehlot mentioned that doubts arose after changes in the EC's appointment process. If the appointments were made using the old method, these controversies might not have occurred.
"Doubts arose as soon as the law was passed by Modiji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) on how the Election Commissioner should be selected. When the Supreme Court suggested a committee comprising the PM, Leader of Opposition, and the CJI to select the election commissioner, this process would have prevented doubts.
Rahul Gandhi wouldn't have had to raise these issues. However, the way the law was changed in a few days, replacing the CJI with union home minister Amit Shah, naturally raised suspicions.
Following this, the behaviour of the EC has changed. Its bias is clearly visible. For the first time, the EC is discriminating against meeting opposition leaders. Its conduct towards the opposition is objectionable," said Gehlot.
He said the situation has reached a point where democracy is under threat in the country. "All institutions, be it the executive, judiciary, or legislature, are under pressure," he added. "If elections are rigged institutionally with the collusion of the EC and the ruling party (BJP), where will democracy stand? There was a time when our experts conducted elections and trained officials from other countries. Now, the credibility is diminishing.
Shouldn't this concern the citizens?" he asked.
Accusing the BJP of systematically damaging democratic institutions through undemocratic practices, Gehlot said it was doing such things for its political advantage. He further alleged that the BJP's manipulation of poll results through 'selective rigging' and the 'use of money power' was a major threat to democracy.
He noted that the closure of EC websites in states like Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra after Gandhi's press conference on Thursday raises suspicion. However, the Rajasthan CEO website, which couldn't be opened in the afternoon, was working later.
He said the EC should publicly clarify its stance. Gehlot suggested that instead of asking Gandhi for a declaration under oath, the EC should issue one to affirm its impartiality and resolve the controversy.

Among the beneficiaries, 1,783 women are from Kotia panchayat in Koraput district near the Andhra Pradesh border. Majhi said the Subhadra Yojana has created a new chapter of progress and transformation in the lives of women across the State. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17 last year and in just six and a half months, all eligible women had been covered under the scheme, he added. Responding to a request by local MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati (Congress), the Chief Minister said a Vande Bharat train would run from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar.

Ramalinga Reddy slams BJP for taking credit for metro project, says Karnataka's contribution much higher
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy on Saturday hit out at BJP leaders, including State president B.Y. Vijayendra and MP for Bengaluru South Tejasvi Surya, for claiming that the Yellow Line — set to be inaugurated on August 10 — was solely a Central government initiative. Speaking at a press conference here, Mr. Reddy said the BJP was more interested in publicity than work and accused its leaders of ignoring the State's major financial role. 'They do not even know the history of the metro project in Karnataka. In 2006, when N. Dharam Singh was the Chief Minister, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone. The metro project is a people's institution, not the property of any political party,' he said. Funding pattern Asserting that in this project, the State government is not a minor partner, Mr. Reddy released documents to show the funding pattern. 'In every phase, Karnataka has contributed as much or more than the Centre, including land acquisition and cost escalations. In Phase 1, the State gave 30% plus land while the Centre's contribution was 25%; in Phase 2, the Centre's share was just 20%, and in Phase 3, Karnataka bore land and rehabilitation costs entirely,' he said. Dismissing Mr. Surya's claim that Congress governments built only 6 km of metro, the Transport Minister said: 'In Phase 1 alone, we planned 42 km. The State has spent ₹24,064.3 crore against the Centre's ₹17,803.85 crore, with ₹43,498.53 crore raised through loans guaranteed by the State'. Delays by Centre Countering an allegation that delays caused a loss of ₹400 crore per km, Mr. Reddy said: 'Is the Centre not equally responsible? Who delayed the arrival of train coaches? Who issues environmental clearances? Is it not the Central government? All these approvals come after Union Cabinet clearance. Even the route safety certificate comes from the Centre. So the delays are due to them. For 11 years, the BJP has ruled at the Centre. They purposely delay because Congress is in power in the State and then blame us. Our Chief Minister has put pressure on the Union Ministers concerned for clearances.' He also accused Karnataka's BJP MPs of failing to raise the issue of the 15th Finance Commission's allocation of ₹11,495 crore for the Peripheral Ring Road and lake development, which he said was denied to the State. 'They will not speak up in Parliament for Karnataka's share but will criticise the State government here,' he remarked. On the issue of metro fare hikes, Mr. Reddy clarified that the decision rests with a committee appointed by the Centre, whose report is approved by the Delhi Metro Board, headed by a senior Union Urban Development Ministry official.

Grace of krishna will lead us and take the country forward: Nirmala Sitharaman
Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman called upon the citizens to pray before the god for prosperity of the country. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed 'Yali' (Sutthupouli), a traditional wood carving around Sri Krishna Mutt on Saturday, Ms. Sitharaman said she has come to the temple of Lord Krishna whose grace has been immense on her. She was overwhelmed to be part of the function, which was spiritually enhancing. Ms. Sitharaman said she was in the temple on the day of Raksha Bandhan. 'I want Krishna's grace for India and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the biggest of challenges, it is the prayers of gurus and grace of god that matter. Grace of Lord Krishna will lead us and take us forward. When you pray before the lord, do pray for Mother India. This country should prosper, and all our youngsters should prosper. We (Indians) should unite to serve the country,' she said. Everyone of the Asta Mutts was serving Lord Krishna and worshiping the Lord, advocated by Madhwacharya. The Asta Mutts have continued the culture of serving 'Bala Krishna'. They have also kept up the tradition of 'Anna Brahma' by feeding people. By the grace of Lord Krishna, the kitchen continues to feed people every day. Recalling her visit to the Mutt with her parents in 2005 during the paryaya of Admar Mutt Vishwapriya Tirtha, Ms. Sitharaman said the visit came at a time when she was going through some personal difficulties. The seer has blessed her several times, and the seer's prayer has made a lot of difference in her life. She hailed the initiative of Paryaya Puthige Mutt seer Sugunendra Tirtha to collect one crore handwritten Bhagavad Gitas as part of 'Koti Gita Lekhana Yajna' and his work of spreading Lord Krishna's message in Bhagawad Gita across the world. Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty was honoured with the Shri Krishna Geethanugraha award for her contributions to literature and philanthropy. Retired Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Dinesh Kumar was present on the occasion.
