Celtics Re-Sign Coach Joe Mazzulla to Contract Extension Amid Historic Start to Career

Epoch Times3 days ago
Even for the Boston Celtics' storied past, what head coach Joe Mazzulla has achieved in his young career is already pretty good, and now it has awarded him with a multi-year contract extension, which it announced on Friday.
In three seasons, Mazzulla has won an NBA championship and owned the best record in the league during that span. The Celtics have won the Atlantic Division every year under Mazzulla, and the team has won at least 57 or more games each time and reached at least the Eastern Conference semifinals annually.

Wyc Grousbeck will reportedly step down as Celtics' lead governor, handing reins to Bill Chisholm after team sale

Current Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck will no longer serve as lead governor following the team's pending $6.1 billion sale, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday. Pending owner Bill Chisholm, a managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, will instead assume the title of lead governor. It's unclear whether the move is a change from the previously reported plan. When reports of the team's sale to Chisholm emerged in May, it was announced Grousbeck would remain the team's governor for three more seasons before handing things over the Chisholm. "[Chisholm] has asked me to run the team as CEO and Governor for the first three years, and stay on as his partner, and I am glad to do so," Grousbeck's statement read at the time. There's enough ambiguity there to suggest this may have always been the plan. Grousbeck's original statement doesn't mention "lead governor," but does mention he would stay on as a partner for a few years. It sounds like that will still be the case. Grousbeck is giving up his "lead governor" title, but will remain the team's alternate governor and CEO through 2028. When the sale was announced in May, Grousbeck had nothing but good things to say about Chisholm, calling him a "terrific person and a true Celtics fan." Grousbeck, with the help of an investment firm, purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002. He served as the team's CEO and lead governor most recently. To the surprise of many, Grousbeck announced in 2024 that he was looking to sell his majority stake in the team. The announcement came just weeks after the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks to win the NBA championship. It didn't take too long for a deal to come together. Just months later, Grousbeck announced the franchise's sale to Chisholm. The sale was announced for $6.1 billion, a North American record at the time.

Wyc Grousbeck stepping down as Celtics governor

Wyc Grousbeck is out as the controlling governor of the Boston Celtics according to ESPN's Shams Charania and Ramona Shelburne. When he first put the team for sale on July 1st, 2024, Grousbeck said he hoped to control the team through the 2027-28 season even after the sale was completed. In the press release of the sale in March, the team announced that Grousbeck would have control through the 2027-28 season. Chisholm agreed to pay $6.1 billion for the team when the sale was agreed to in March. He will now take over full control of the Celtics when the transfer is approved by the NBA's Board of Governors within the next couple of weeks. My two cent:, this isn't a huge surprise. Chisholm was always going to be the final decision maker regardless of who was tabbed as the governor of the team because he is going to be writing the checks. I am sure Grousbeck saw that writing on the wall and decided to just hand the title of governor over as well. CelticsBlog alum Keith Smith, put it best: Thus, this puts to bed the Grousbeck era where the Celtics won two titles, made the Finals four times and only missed the playoffs twice since 2007. It ushers in a new era with new ownership that Celtics fans can only hope will be as successful as the last one.

LeBron James will break another long-standing record on Opening Night

I gotta be honest. At this point, I assume that LeBron James already holds most of the relevant individual NBA records. I mean, James has been playing professional basketball for 20 years. He did surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA's all-time scoring leader a couple of years ago. He's an all-timer still playing at an All-Star-caliber level at the age of 40. Those kinds of guys usually rewrite the record books as they go, you know? LA TENSION: LeBron is overstaying his welcome with Lakers But no. With the NBA revealing the schedule for some of its more notable 2025-2026 marquee dates on Tuesday, James somehow has another impressive accolade in his crosshairs. When his Los Angeles Lakers play the Golden State Warriors on Opening Night, James will officially become the all-time leader in NBA seasons played, surpassing the legendary Vince Carter, with whom he is still currently tied at 22 seasons apiece. Again, this is objectively bonkers now that I see it at face value and laid out like this, but I'm surprised James hadn't already achieved this! Well, the more you know: I'm gonna be candid again. I think James is the best basketball player ever. Full stop. I will definitely appreciate him while he's still around, but I really hope he will just retire soon already. It'd be nice and appreciated if he stepped out of the spotlight for the NBA's next generation. But if he's going to keep stacking achievements like this as an active NBA player, who are any of us to hate on that? He's penning his legend every time he steps on the court. Who are some of the other NBA icons with the most seasons played? I'm glad you asked. Aside from James and Carter, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Willis, and Robert Parish all played at least 21 seasons. Next to James, Chris Paul is the only other active player with at least 20 seasons played. Can James break any other NBA records this year? Yes! If the Lakers' forward plays at least 50 regular-season games this season, he will surpass Parish (1,611) for the most-played regular-season games all time.
