Marathi cinema marks decade-long presence in Cannes Film Market
The Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation (MFSCDC) pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival, which began on May 13, has four new feature films from independent filmmakers representing Marathi cinema.
Supported by the Maharashtra government's ministry of culture and the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari, which functions under the administration of MFSCDC, the Maharashtra pavilion is in its tenth year at the Cannes Film Market, the biggest film market in the world.
"Four Marathi feature films were selected by the MFSCDC this year to showcase Marathi Cinema in the Marche du Film at the 78th Cannes Film Festival," says Marathi filmmaker Manoj Khadam, who is coordinating the Maharashtra pavilion.
'STHAL - A Match' directed by Jayant Somlkar, 'Snow Flower' by Gajendra Ahire, 'Khalid's Shivaji' by Raj More and 'Old Furniture' by Mahesh Manjrekar, are representing Marathi cinema in Cannes this year.
"A total of 48 films were received out of which four films were selected for screening in the Cannes Film Market," adds Khadam, whose debut film, 'Kshitij', which deals with education for girl children in the drought-prone Marathwada region, won 17 awards, including the Maharashtra state award for Best Film and Best Director.
"The Maharashtra government along with Film City Mumbai has been successfully showcasing Marathi Cinema at the Cannes Film Market to provide a platform for independent filmmakers to interact with the international producers, distributors and filmmakers to establish themselves on a global platform," explains Khadam.
"Marathi Cinema is well appreciated since its inception as the first Indian film ('Raja Harishchandra' by Dadasaheb Phalke) made in 1913 . A lot of young filmmakers from rural areas are successfully bringing up new concepts and merging them with new technologies to create their own exclusive style in filmmaking," says Khadam.
The Maharashtra pavilion will function at the Cannes Film Market, called Marche du Film, from May 13 to 20 this year to promote and market Marathi films.
First set up in 2016, the Maharashtra pavilion in the Cannes film market has been present in Cannes every year since then, except in 2020 when it participated online. The state pavilion has so far screened more than 40 feature films in the Cannes film market while bringing as many emerging filmmakers from the state to the famous festival in the past one decade.
"The Marathi cinema doesn't have a star-based culture," says Raj More, the director of 'Khalid's Shivaji', a critique of discrimination based on caste, religion, gender and race. "The Marathi audience watch films for their content," adds the debutant director, an alumnus of the JJ School of Arty, Mumbai.
"The Maharashtra government's promotion of Marathi cinema is part of the state's culture policy unveiled last year," says Mahesh Varhal, Deputy Secretary, Maharashtra Culture Department.
"A single-window permission for shooting in Maharashtra was announced by the Maharashtra government this year," adds Geetha Deshpande, Chief Administrative Officer, Film City, Goregaon.

Priya Bapat says OTT has given her challenging parts to play
Mumbai: Actress Priya Bapat, who leads the investigation in the recently released psychological-horror streaming series 'Andhera', has said that working on OTT has been a very rewarding experience for her. The actress spoke with IANS during the promotional run of the show, and shared that while she has been working in the Hindi and Marathi cinema for over 20 years, it's the OTT, which has given her the opportunity to try meatier parts. She told IANS, 'I feel that I think I have got more meaty parts and more challenging roles in the space of OTT now even from the time I started be it 'City of Dreams' or 'Andhera', every show that I have done so far has given me a lot more. Everything I did and learnt in my Marathi industry and from the cinema that I did, I think more than the box-office, OTT really has been challenging, experimenting and it's a great space to be'. The actress also called the experience of working in OTT, a liberating experience as makers on OTT trust her with parts which are well-fleshed out. She further mentioned, 'It is liberating, and also for an actor like me it's a great time because people are trusting you with different parts, more women characters are being written in a good way in a good space'. 'Andhera', which is set in Mumbai, follows Inspector Kalpana Kadam and Jay, a medical student, who become entangled in a missing-person case that unearths a sinister presence beneath the city. The series explores the fictional space of 'What if darkness comes to life?'. It also stars Surveen Chawla, Priya Bapat and Prajakta Koli. Produced by Excel Entertainment, and directed by Raaghav Dar, the series is available to stream on Prime Video.

Maharashtra: 2 dead, 117 injured in Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai and Thane
Two persons have died and 117 others suffered injuries during the 'Dahi Handi' festival in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane city which drew large crowds of people, including celebrities, officials said. Some leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also came together to join the celebration, amid speculation of a possible alliance between the two parties for the upcoming local body polls in Maharashtra. Amid the scramble to woo Marathi voters, Dahi Handi celebrations organised by leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT), rival Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Raj Thackeray-headed MNS in Mumbai and neighbouring areas remained steeped in political symbolism. The festival, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, saw troupes of young men and women forming human pyramids to break dahi handis (pots of curd) suspended in the air with ropes. Rohan Mohan Malvi, part of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak, fell unconscious while sitting in a tempo at Adarsh Nagar in Mumbai's Andheri area on Saturday, an official said, adding he did not take part in the pyramid formation since he recently suffered a bout of jaundice. "He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar where doctors declared him dead on arrival," the official said. Earlier, on Saturday afternoon, a 32-year-old man, identified as Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari, fell to death while tying 'Dahi Handi' in Mankhurd in the north eastern part of the metropolis, officials said. "He was tying the handi to a rope from the first-floor window grille of his house in Maharashtra Nagar when he fell. He was taken to the civic-run Shatabdi Govandi Hospital where he was declared brought dead," an official said. Till 9 pm on Saturday, 95 persons were reported to be injured during the festivities in Mumbai, with the condition of two being serious, the official said. "Of the 95 govindas, 76 were discharged after treatment, while 19 are hospitalised. The 95 injured comprise 30 in the island city, 31 in the eastern suburbs and 34 in the western part of the city," he informed. In Thane city, 22 participants were injured while attempting human pyramids, local civic body's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi said. Of them, 17 were admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, including some who suffered head injuries, shoulder dislocations, waist and chest injuries, he said. An 18-year-old participant, who suffered a head injury, was referred to the state-run J J Hospital in Mumbai for advanced care. Some of the others injured included children in the age group of 5 to 10 years, the official said. Another five persons were admitted to the District Government Hospital in Thane, with injuries ranging from hand fractures to back pain and abrasions, Tadvi said. The festivities drew large crowds at multiple mandals in Thane where actors Govinda, Chunky Pandey and Sunil Shetty joined the celebrations. Actor Govinda danced to some of his popular songs at a Dahi Handi festival gathering in Tembi Naka area of Thane, where Deputy CM Eknath Shinde was also present. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former MP Rajan Vichare and MNS leader Avinash Jadhav came together at festivities organised by the Raj Thackeray's party at Naupada in Thane, and announced their partnership was like "Fevicol ki jodi which cannot be separated by anyone."
