Gold falls Rs 500 to Rs 1,00,420/10 g; silver declines Rs 1,000

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Gold prices fell Rs 500 to Rs 1,00,420 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday amid a firm trend in the overseas markets, according to the All India Sarafa Association.
The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had ended at Rs 1,00,920 per 10 grams in the previous market session.
In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity dipped Rs 450 to Rs 1,00,050 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. It had closed at Rs 1,00,500 per 10 grams on Monday.
'Gold prices cooled down, as peace talks between (US) President Donald Trump and (Ukraine) President Volodymyr Zelenskyy brought some hope for ending the war in Ukraine during a meeting at the White House, with European and NATO leaders also in attendance," Abans Financial Services CEO Chintan Mehta said.
According to Praveen Singh, Head of Commodities and Currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said, 'Weakness in the USD/INR pair on the Indian government tweaking GST rules is weighing on the domestic gold prices." In addition, silver prices declined Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,14,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday, as per the Association.
The white metal had settled at Rs 1,15,000 per kg in the previous market session.
In international markets, spot gold went up 0.15 per cent to trade at USD 3,337.92 per ounce in New York.
'Gold prices declined below USD 3,380 per ounce as investors turned their attention towards US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's forthcoming statements at the Jackson Hole Symposium as well as minutes from the Fed's most recent meeting," Renisha Chainani, Head, Research, Augmont, said.
Spot silver was trading at USD 38.09 per ounce, up 0.19 per cent.
'On the macro front, US housing market data, which includes building permits and housing starts, will be released later in the day, which may provide volatility in US dollar and gold prices during the session," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst of Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. PTI HG TRB

TNPDCL mulls hike in additional surcharge for open access buyers
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has filed a petition before the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) seeking approval to increase the additional surcharge payable by open access consumers from the present rate of 10 paise per unit to Rs 1.14 per unit. If TNERC accepts the proposal and issues necessary orders, open access consumers — referring to the category of high tension (HT) consumers who buy (electricity) from third party sale and power exchanges — have to pay the new additional surcharge for the period from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The commission has ordered that the petition be uploaded on its website for public comments and has fixed September 16 as the date for the next hearing. It has asked all comments to be submitted latest by September 2. K Venkatachalam, Chief Advisor and CEO of Renewable Energy Producers Association, told TNIE, 'The proposed additional surcharge of Rs 1.14 is nearly 12 times higher, which is highly abnormal. Already, we are paying around Rs 10 per unit towards wheeling charges, cross-subsidy and other costs on power transmission. Open access consumers are already burdened by the multi-year tariff year on year. At this stage, the fresh hike to the extent to be increased, will hit the industries, especially spinning mills, hard.'

Trump imposed tariffs on India to deter Russia's war in Ukraine: Leavitt
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday (local time) said that US President Donald Trump imposed additional 25 per cent tariffs on India to stop Russia from pursuing war in Ukraine. Trump doubled India's tariff rate to 50 per cent for its continuous purchase of Russian energy at a time when the US President has been trying to broker a ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine. Leavitt made these remarks during the press briefing and said, "Look, the president has put tremendous public pressure to bring this war to a close. He's taken actions, as you've seen, sanctions on India and other actions as well. He's made himself very clear that he wants to see this war end, and he has scoffed at the ideas of others that have been raised that we should wait another month before any meeting takes place." Trump meets Ukrainian President, European leaders On Monday, Trump met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and seven European leaders at the White House, discussing ways to put an end to the war in Ukraine. Speaking on Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy, Leavitt said that Trump wishes to bring peace as soon as possible. She further said, "The president wants to move and he wants to bring this war to an end as quickly as possible... With all of those European leaders leaving the White House, including the NATO Secretary General, they all agree that this is a great first step. And it's a good thing that these two leaders are going to be sitting down together, and the president expects that to happen." Leavitt also reiterated the White House's claim that if Trump were president, the war would never have happened. She also highlighted Trump's dedication to ending the war, adding that the US President has spent a lot of time and energy on this effort. Leveraged trade to stop India-Pakistan conflict: Trump Leavitt also reiterated Trump's previous claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan following the tensions that emerged after Operation Sindoor (a coordinated missile strike at terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir). Speaking during the press briefing, she said that the US President Trump was proud of the peace deals and leveraged trade to end the Indo-Pakistan conflict after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. She said, "[For] India and Pakistan [conflict], he [Trump] used trade in a very powerful way as leverage to bring that conflict to an end. So I know he's very proud of all of these achievements, and I know he's very honoured to serve as the president of the United States and to restore peace around the world." Ever since India and Pakistan agreed to an understanding to stop all firing and military actions in May, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he was able to stop the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. While India has consistently denied any interference, Pakistan's Army chief Asim Munir thanked Trump for stopping the conflict.
