‘It's about lives': Thousands rally across Indonesia as e-hailing, food delivery riders demand 10pc cap on GoJek and Grab fees
JAKARTA, May 20 — Thousands of drivers from ride-hailing and food delivery apps protested in Indonesia today, demanding a 10-percent cap on commission fees.
Hundreds of drivers gathered in the streets of the capital Jakarta, driving their motorbikes and waving flags.
Thousands more in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya drove to the offices of ride-hailing apps GoJek and Grab, before rallying in front of the governor's office, an AFP journalist saw.
'Many of our friends got into accidents on the road, died on the road because they have to chase their income,' Raden Igun Wicaksono, chairman of the driver's union Garda Indonesia, told AFP.
'It's about lives, not about business calculation.'
Drivers are also demanding the end of discounted fare programmes and calling on lawmakers to meet with the drivers' association and app companies.
Motorbike and scooter drivers who form the backbone of Indonesia's sprawling gig economy earn up to 150,000 rupiah (US$10) a day, but costs including app commissions and fuel eat into their income.
Gojek—which alongside Singapore's Grab is among Asia's most valuable start-ups—said it was committed to 'supporting the long-term welfare of our driver partners'.
But lowering its 20-per cent commission fee, which complied with regulations, was 'not a viable solution', according to Ade Mulya, head of public policy for Gojek's parent company GoTo.
'Reducing the commission to 10 percent is not a viable solution, as the current 20 per cent commission from customer trip fares is essential to fund initiatives that directly support the sustainability of the ecosystem and driver income,' Ade said.
Tirza Munusamy, Grab Indonesia's head of public affairs, said the company's commission structure was 'necessary' to maintain the quality of service.
'If this commission structure were to be significantly reduced, the impact would go beyond service quality—it would threaten the sustainability of an ecosystem that supports millions of people,' Tirza said, adding that Grab was open for dialogue to ensure policies remain relevant for drivers. — AFP

Grab plans US$1.25bil convertible bond sale for acquisitions
Grab's app is ubiquitous in Southeast Asia for ride-hailing and food delivery. (AFP pic) SINGAPORE : Grab Holdings Ltd is planning a US$1.25 billion sale of bonds convertible into stock, partly to bulk up its warchest for acquisitions amid signs that talks to take over rival delivery-and-transport provider GoTo Group have stalled. Singapore-based Grab, whose app is ubiquitous in Southeast Asia for ride-hailing and food delivery, will issue convertible bonds that mature on June 15, 2030, it said in a statement yesterday. The securities will carry a coupon of as much as 0.5% a year, payable semi-annually, according to terms of the deal seen by Bloomberg News. Grab joins the flurry of sales of bonds that can be swapped into stock by Asian companies this year. That's particularly been the case with Chinese firms as issuers from Baidu Inc to Ping An Insurance Group Co of China announced sizeable deals in recent months. Aside from possible acquisitions, Grab said it plans some share buybacks – the company has US$274 million remaining under its share-repurchase program as of the end of March. The bonds will be redeemable, under certain conditions, from mid-2028. As for the GoTo acquisition, Grab yesterday signalled that it was halting or at least pausing a planned US$7 billion acquisition. The pair of ride-hailing and food-delivery companies have held on-and-off talks for years but a combination never materialised, partly because of antitrust concerns likely to arise from combining the two dominant players in Southeast Asia. Grab's offering is the largest Asian convertible-bond deal denominated in US dollars since Ping An's US$3.5 billion deal in July 2024, and the biggest by a non-Chinese company since Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc's US$1.7 billion issuance in 2023. Ping An last week also issued convertible bonds worth US$1.5 billion, denominated in Hong Kong dollars. Morgan Stanley, HSBC Holdings Plc and JPMorgan Chase & Co are joint global coordinators of the deal.

Sarawak to lead sustainable transport dialogue at regional summit
Sarawak Skills executive director Hallman Sabri (seated centre) and committee members showing posters of the Green Mobility Innovation Summit. KUCHING: Sarawak is set to lead the conversation on sustainable transportation in Southeast Asia at the upcoming Green Mobility Innovation Summit. The event that is set to take place on September 8-9 will gather policymakers, industry leaders, educators, and innovators from across the region. It aims to share expertise, foster collaboration, and promote sustainable transportation solutions. It is jointly organised by the state Education, Innovation and Talent Development Ministry, Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), and Sarawak Skills Development Centre. The theme is "Driving the Future: Talent, Innovation and Sustainability in Green Mobility". In a statement on Tuesday (June 10), Sarawak Skills stated that the summit is a vital component of the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 initiative to enhance regional connectivity and sustainable development. The vision's key measures include eco-friendly practices in infrastructure development, improving climate resilience, and implementing smart city initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and support environmental sustainability. "The importance of gathering experts and delegates in green mobility lies in its potential to nurture talent for sustainable transportation," Sarawak Skills executive director Hallman Sabri said. He emphasised that this objective is not just a local priority but a shared regional goal under the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025. "The summit serves as an essential platform for aligning strategies, building competencies, and fostering regional cooperation in the transition towards a green economy." The summit will feature over 30 speakers from ASEAN, Britain, China, and Australia, discussing themes such as talent development, innovative technologies, governance, and global collaboration. Sarawak Skills also noted that the summit aligns with Sarawak's commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. It highlighted Sarawak's progress in clean energy and sustainable mobility, including the introduction of hydrogen-powered buses, expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and smart city initiatives in urban centres like Kuching. "Additionally, Sarawak is investing heavily in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to equip its workforce with skills for the green and digital economy. "These state-level initiatives position Sarawak as an ideal host for the summit and underscore its leadership in driving innovation and sustainability in the region," Sarawak Skills said.

Stocks climb, dollar dips with US-China trade talks eyed
The S&P and Nasdaq rose, but Dow Jones gains were capped by a McDonald's dip after a Morgan Stanley downgrade. (AP pic) NEW YORK : Global stocks climbed on Monday while the dollar retreated as talks began in London between the US and China, aimed at cooling a trade dispute between the world's two largest economies. The dispute has expanded beyond tit-for-tat tariffs to restrictions over rare earths, threatening to cripple supply chains and slow global growth. US President Donald Trump said his administration was doing well and that he was getting good reports as US officials hold the talks with China in London. 'The market deems any dialogue with Beijing as progress, whether or not it leads to tangible results. The market is just going to take the administration's word for it, until proven otherwise,' said Jake Dollarhide, CEO of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On Wall Street, the S&P and Nasdaq closed higher, with the Dow ending flat as declines in Travelers and McDonald's, the latter of which was downgraded by Morgan Stanley to an 'equal-weight' rating, curbed gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.11 points, or flat, to 42,761.76, the S&P 500 rose 5.52 points, or 0.09%, to 6,005.88 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 61.28 points, or 0.31%, to 19,591.24. Small-cap stocks outperformed, with the S&P 600 index up 0.9%. MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe advanced 1.94 points, or 0.22%, to 893.90 and was on track for its second straight session of gains. It has risen in five of the last six sessions. In Europe, the pan-European STOXX 600 index closed down 0.07% to snap a four-session winning streak, its longest run of consecutive gains in three weeks. The US dollar slipped against most major currencies, as optimism over a better-than-expected US employment report on Friday was offset by caution ahead of the trade talks. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent, commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and trade representative Jamieson Greer are representing Washington in the talks in London, Trump said in a social media post. China's foreign ministry said vice premier He Lifeng was in Britain for the first meeting of the China-US economic and trade consultation mechanism. US economic data showed wholesale inventories increased in April amid stockpiling of prescription medication in anticipation of tariffs from the Trump administration. Investors are also awaiting US inflation data on Wednesday that may adjust expectations for the timing of any rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Analysts at Morgan Stanley said they see May as the starting point for a string of increasingly strong core inflation prints, with the push from tariffs peaking in the third quarter and beginning to fade in the fourth quarter. The market does not see the Fed likely to cut before its September meeting, currently pricing in a 62% chance for a cut of at least 25 basis points, according to LSEG data. Fed officials are in a blackout period ahead of the June 18 policy decision. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, lost 0.14% to 98.97, with the euro up 0.25% at US$1.1423. Longer-dated US Treasury yields were lower at the start of the week, reversing after Friday's jobs report pushed yields higher. The yield on benchmark US 10-year notes declined 2.8 basis points to 4.482%. Investors will monitor auctions of three-, 10- and 30-year US notes and bonds this week for signs of investor demand. US crude settled up 1.1% to US$65.29 a barrel and Brent settled at US$67.04 per barrel, up 0.86% on the day on hopes a trade deal could spur the global economic outlook along with a softer dollar.
