The Netherlands face a tough task against Nations League holders and reigning European champions Spain. However, the Dutch can take heart from a strong record against Spain. In the last eight meetings. the Netherlands have lost just once, in the 2010 World Cup final.
Ronald Koeman is light defensively with Nathan Ake, Stefan de Vrij and Devyne Rensch unavailable through injury. Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven has also not been included after a spell on the sidelines, while Denzel Dumfries has withdrawn from the initial squad.
Uncapped Ajax defender Youri Baas has been called up as a replacement for Dumfries, while Brighton midfielder Mats Wieffer was a late inclusion for the injured Jerdy Schouten.
Memphis Depay has been selected despite scoring just twice in 15 games for Corinthians in 2025. The 31-year-old has 46 goals for the national team, just four short of Robin van Persie's all-time record.
Netherlands predicted XI: Verbruggen; Frimpong, De Ligt, Van Dijk, J. Timber; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Simons, Depay, Gakpo.

Injured Barcelona defender on track to return fully fit for pre-season
Barcelona defender Jules Kounde is expected to return to full fitness in time for the club's pre-season preparations, which begin on July 13. According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, it has been learned that the French international is recovering well from the hamstring injury he picked up on April 30 during the thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter Milan in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. Advertisement Kounde's injury sidelined him for the rest of the season under Hansi Flick and also cost him a place in Didier Deschamps' France squad for the UEFA Nations League matches, where they faced Spain in the semi-final and then Germany for the third-place finish. However, recent updates suggest the 26-year-old is on course for a complete recovery, with no setbacks reported. Training hard despite being on holiday While enjoying a well-earned break in the United States, Kounde has been posting regular updates on social media showing his commitment to recovery. From running in public parks to working out on athletics tracks, he is making sure he returns in peak physical condition for the new campaign. Advertisement The injury, a distal hamstring issue in his left thigh, now appears to be healing well. Sources close to the club and the player believe there is no reason to worry about his availability when the squad reunites in July. Kounde's work ethic hasn't gone unnoticed either, as Barcelona manager Hansi Flick even joked during a press conference that resting the Frenchman is nearly impossible: 'Otherwise he will go running along the Sitges seafront.' Now a key figure at right-back, despite originally being a central defender, Kounde's dedication and versatility make him a vital part of Flick's plans going forward. With his recovery going smoothly, Barcelona fans can look forward to seeing him back in action for pre-season training and ready for a fresh start under the new manager.

Tijjani Reijnders to Manchester City: Transfers TLDR
Manchester City have signed Tijjani Reijnders from Milan for an initial £46.6million ($62.9m) fee plus potential add-ons. The 26-year-old Netherlands international midfielder has signed a five-year contract. As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series (you can read them all here) will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals. Football is in Reijnders' blood. His father, Martin, was a journeyman player largely in the Dutch league and his younger brother, Eliano, is a professional there now with PEC Zwolle. The siblings have both Dutch and Indonesian heritage and while Tijjani plays internationally for the Netherlands, 24-year-old Eliano has chosen to represent Indonesia. Advertisement Tijjani moved from PEC's academy to AZ's in 2017 before leaving his homeland two years ago to join Milan. He has four goals in 23 international appearances since making his senior debut in 2023, and last season was one of Serie A's leading midfielders, scoring 10 times in his 37 league games. Steve Madeley Reijnders is a forward-looking player who specialises in either carrying or passing the ball through opponents' lines of defence and, at 6ft 1in (185cm), he can punch his weight physically and athletically. Although he will often collect the ball in deep positions, he is not a natural defender, so City fans should not expect to see him flying into tackles on a regular basis. Steve Madeley Reijnders has the traits to succeed in a Pep Guardiola team. He is excellent at receiving passes in the defensive third and turning away from pressure, often going on lengthy runs forward to get his team on the front foot, as the graph shows. Reijnders added goals to his game last season with 15 for Milan across all competitions in 54 appearances. Whether that translates into the Premier League is up for debate. The 26-year-old's profile is closer to that of City midfield stalwarts Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan out of possession, in terms of positioning and the nature of supporting runs made. Bernardo and Gundogan will be 31 and 35 respectively by the end of October and they both struggled with the pace of the Premier League last season, making Reijnders a necessary summer addition. His defensive game was criticised at Milan but should initially be offset by having a fit-again Rodri playing behind him. Anantaajith Raghuraman Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Reijnders has played in 140 of 146 league games for AZ and Milan without suffering an injury. Anantaajith Raghuraman Frank Rijkaard, his legendary fellow Dutchman, who also starred for Milan before later managing Barcelona and the Netherlands' national team, told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year: 'I hope that Reijnders becomes one of the best midfielders in the world, but I sincerely believe he's already on the right path. Advertisement 'He can cover all roles in the midfield and shows his generosity: he never holds back from a run for the team and always gives his best. With the quality he has, he's excellent at creating dangerous chances for his teammates and setting up the play well.' Steve Madeley Reijnders has joined City on a five-year contract, ending in June 2030. The Milan midfielder commanded an initial £46.6m fee, becoming the club's 17th-most expensive signing. There are add-ons in the deal which could take that figure higher. Through signing now, a small amount of the overall fee hits City's 2024-25 financials, alongside just under three weeks' worth of his wages (City also pay other employment-related costs, such as national insurance, on top of that). Chris Weatherspoon Assuming agent fees at 10 per cent, Reijnders' transfer adds £528,000 to City's costs for 2024-25. Thereafter, this deal will cost them £10.1m per year in transfer fee amortisation, up to the end of the 2029-30 season. Reijnders' weekly salary at City is unknown, but it will be enough to ensure the cost to them over the next five years goes beyond the estimated £51.2m in transfer and agent fees. On the selling side, Milan have more than doubled the reported €25million (£21.1m/$28.6m at current rates) they paid AZ for him two years ago. Reijnders signed a new contract just this March and, with an estimated book value of around £15m, the Serie A club are making a significant accounting profit. Not all of the fee will go to them, as The Athletic has confirmed AZ are due a percentage of Milan's profit on the deal. The size of that sell-on clause is unknown but, unless it exceeds 10 per cent, Milan stand to make at least £29million in accounting profit by selling the Dutchman. Chris Weatherspoon

Man City signs Reijnders from AC Milan to complete $150M spending spree
Manchester City concluded a $150 million spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup by announcing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Reijnders moved for an initial fee of 55 million euros ($63 million) and is the second midfielder — after France playmaker Rayan Cherki — to join City in the special June 1-10 transfer window created to allow sides in the 32-team Club World Cup to reshape their squads.
