The Chinese military announced Wednesday that it would hold an annual naval exercise and conduct a maritime joint patrol with Russian forces next month. Defence Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang said that the Joint Sea 2025 exercise would be held in the air and seas near the Russian port city of Vladivostok, which lies across the sea from Japan 's west coast. Last year, the drill was held off southern China in the South China Sea The Chinese and Russian governments have deepened their ties in recent years, with China providing an economic lifeline to Russia in the face of Western sanctions over Moscow 's invasion of Ukraine European leaders asked China again last week to use its influence to pressure Russia to end the war, now in its fourth year, but there was no sign that Beijing would do so.Japan's Defence Ministry said in an annual report earlier this month that China's growing military cooperation with Russia poses serious security concerns.Zhang said the exercise and patrol are part of an annual cooperation plan and are not aimed at any other country or related to the current international or regional situation. He didn't provide specific dates for the drill or the joint patrol in the Pacific, which he said would be the sixth of its kind.Zhang, speaking at a monthly press conference, criticised ongoing drills that the US Air Force is conducting with Japan and other partners in the western Pacific.Resolute Force Pacific is the largest contingency-response exercise ever conducted by the Air Force in the region, according to the US military."The US has been blindly flexing muscles in the Asia-Pacific region and attempting to use military drills as a pretext to gang up, intimidate and pressure other countries, and undermine peace and stability in the region," Zhang said. The Air Force has said the exercise will train its forces to maintain readiness and execute missions under stress to demonstrate their ability to defend the United States and partner nations in the Pacific.

White House confirms Russia proposed Trump-Putin meeting; Date and venue undecided
The White House has confirmed that the idea of a direct meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was initiated by Moscow. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday (August 6) that the proposal followed a lengthy meeting in Moscow between Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff. 'The Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the President is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelensky,' said Leavitt. While the statement signaled growing diplomatic momentum, Leavitt did not comment on when or where the potential meetings could take place. An unnamed White House official told The Associated Press that no date or location had been finalised. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said planning remained in early stages. If the meeting materializes, it would mark Trump's first face-to-face with Putin since returning to office in January and a significant milestone in the ongoing three-year war in Ukraine. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin held a three-hour meeting with Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, in Moscow on Wednesday. The discussion came just days before a Friday deadline set by the White House for Russia to agree to a peace deal or face expanded economic sanctions, including secondary sanctions targeting nations that continue to buy Russian oil. 'Everyone agrees this war must come to a close,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'And we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come.' Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to end the war on 'Day One' of his second term, has spoken with Putin multiple times by phone since January. He has also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in February and again during Pope Francis' funeral in April. Trump acknowledged speaking to European leaders on Wednesday following what he described as a 'highly productive' meeting between Witkoff and Putin. Zelensky said he had a phone call with Trump after the Moscow meeting and that European leaders joined the conversation. 'It seems that Russia is now more inclined to agree to a ceasefire,' Zelensky said, adding that 'the pressure on Moscow is working.' However, he warned against complacency. 'It is important to make sure Russia does not deceive us or the United States when it comes to the details of a potential agreement,' Zelensky said. The US is expected to announce new sanctions against Russia on Friday if no meaningful progress is made toward peace. The Trump administration had imposed a 10-day deadline following stalled negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and Western allies. The New York Times first reported the potential for a three-way summit between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky. It was also reported that Trump has informed European leaders of his intent to meet with Putin first, then host a trilateral summit.

US President Donald Trump plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as next week, and follow it up with a three-way meeting that includes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — without any European leaders planned meetings, first reported by the New York Times, came to light during a phone call Trump held on Wednesday with several European leaders. According to reports, Trump said he intended to meet with Putin soon, followed by a second meeting including both Putin and Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the President is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelenskyy. President Trump wants this brutal war to end," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, responding to the report. However, she did not address the potential timing of a meeting. The potential meeting was revealed just hours after Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. It's not clear whether Putin or Zelenskyy has officially agreed to the statement came after a three-hour meeting between Witkoff and Putin at the Kremlin, just two days ahead of the US-imposed deadline for Russia to show progress towards a peace agreement or face fresh economic penalties.- Ends
