Top Five Challengers to Penn State in the Big Ten
5. Washington
Washington may not be on every Big Ten's radar, but if that prolific backfield improves upon the strides they made last year, they very well could be the shock team in the conference this season. With Demond Williams Jr. in his first full year as the starter, look for him to brink back a certain level of dynamism to the offense not unlike what Michael Penix Jr. offered a couple of years ago. Look for Denzel Boston to be the new Rome Odunze, with his elite catch radius and detailed route tree. Definitely don't forget about the dynamic tandem of Jonah Coleman and rising star Adam Mohammed. While Penn State and Washington do not face off in the regular season, a potential Big Ten championship game will almost certainly provide fireworks. The Huskies are ready to make waves in the Big Ten. The rest of the conference better look out.
4. Illinois
Illinois won't be surprising anyone this season. After their first 10-win season in over a decade, the Illini are now on everyone's radar as a true contender. Yes, they may not have the same depth at the receiver position as last year, but with Luke Altmyer's steadying presence and calm in the clutch, Illinois can make up for it. The return of All-Big Ten first team selection Gabe Jacas off the edge is another scary proposition. The Illini may not be as fun and frisky as last year, but they'll definitely be pesky enough to stick around late into the season. Should they beat Ohio State in Week 6, the ball could be rolling for another stunning season in Champaign.
3. Michigan
To some, Michigan are still somewhat of an unknown entity. They can either be the squad that upset both Ohio State and Alabama with impassioned defensive performances. Or, despite offensive reinforcements on both the recruiting and portal fronts, they still won't be able to hang tough in the brutal Big Ten. This ranking is highly contingent on No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood and his untapped potential. His upside is what makes this Michigan squad much more intriguing that last year's. Combine it with a defense filled with players with chips on their shoulders and if Sherrone Moore continues to be an inspirational leader for this squad, Michigan could be right back in the thick of the playoff race...and as Big Ten title contenders.
2. Oregon
Oregon could also be another team whose success this season could be highly varied. With former UCLA transfer Dante Moore at the helm, it will be fascinating to see his development under Dan Lanning, a coach who is quickly becoming a new "QB whisperer" in the college football landscape. What should excite Oregon fans(and subsequently scare other Big Ten fans), is the addition of Dakorien Moore to the WR corps. A freak athlete, Moore is destined to light up Big Ten scoreboards in what should be an illustrious career with the Ducks. Their defense is also going to be one of the most potent in the country, returning superstar Matayo Uiagelelei. This Oregon team could flounder, but I'm betting one what could be the most riveting new QB-WR tandem in the conference. One that will leave fans clamoring for Moore. Penn State fans should be penciling in their Week 4 Whiteout matchup as one of the most anticipated games on the slate.
1. Ohio State
It's no secret that the Buckeyes will be the biggest test for this Nittany Lions squad. The last time the Nittany Lions beat the Buckeyes was way back in 2016, ironically the last time they won a Big Ten title. This year, while the matchup looks wholly different, the experience edge might not mean much in a psychological battle. And it's not as if Ohio State are lacking in the talent department. They still have Jeremiah, the undisputed best wide receiver in the nation. They now have a stellar tight end in Max Klare who will mightily benefit from teams' struggles with Smith. On the defensive side of the ball, Caleb Downs returns as the best safety in the nation as well. The Nittany Lions will travel to Columbus in Week 6, looking to vanquish their demons once and for all. Penn State fans should not be prepared for a cakewalk however.

Seahawks sign DL Seth Coleman
Defensive lineman Seth Coleman was waived by the Seahawks earlier this week, but he didn't have to wait long to get a call back to the team. The Seahawks announced that they have re-signed Coleman to their 90-man roster. Wide receiver Montorie Foster Jr. was waived with an injury designation in a corresponding move. Coleman initially signed with the Seahawks in May after going undrafted out of Illinois. He had 183 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries while in college. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said that Foster, who was also undrafted this year, suffered a hamstring injury. He had 108 catches for 1,426 yards and eight touchdowns at Michigan State.

In what may serve as a de facto introductory press conference for Kevin Durant, the Rockets will host their annual media day on Monday, September 29. In what could be an introductory press conference of sorts for Kevin Durant, the Houston Rockets are expected to host their 2025-26 media day on Monday, September 29. The dates are publicly available on the NBA's website. Coincidentally, that September 29 date will be Durant's 37th birthday. Training camp will likely open the following day, September 30, with the preseason opener scheduled for a week later on October 6. Opening night for the Rockets could come as soon as October 21, with complete regular-season schedules to be released by the league office later this month. Because Durant was acquired in July and the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) does not mandate media availabilities in the offseason, the 15-time All-Star has yet to speak with reporters in Houston. While it's still possible that a press conference could occur earlier, nothing has been scheduled, and NBA personnel often spend the weeks immediately prior to camp traveling or spending time with their inner circle — i.e. family or close friends that they can't see as often during the season. In many cases, this requires traveling out of market. In a recent interview, Rockets veteran Dorian Finney-Smith referenced an unofficial team mini-camp being held in September, which could further tighten this year's schedule. Media day consists of interviews with each NBA team's key players, coaches, and executives, who are asked to share perspectives about the season ahead. Because Durant's media day interview will undoubtedly consist of questions about his new team in Houston, that might be another incentive for him to wait — since he will likely be addressing the same types of topics, regardless of whether he does an earlier event. After previous superstar acquisitions, such as Dwight Howard in the 2013 offseason and Chris Paul in 2017, the Rockets held offseason events featuring both a press conference with reporters and an opportunity for the player to directly engage with the fan base. It's a safe assumption that the team would have loved to capitalize on the Durant buzz with a similar engagement event, but the team cannot mandate his appearance in a period without games. It comes down to the player's availability, and there haven't been many indications of Durant physically being in Houston this offseason. The Rockets have yet to announce locations or times for media day or training camp. Last season, media day took place inside the team's home arena of Toyota Center, while training camp was held at the team's newly constructed practice complex in Houston. Infielder Curtis Mead excited for ‘new beginning' after being traded to the Chicago White Sox
SEATTLE — Curtis Mead described his 2025 as 'interesting.' 'I obviously wasn't playing very frequently in Tampa and started off pretty slowly,' the infielder said Tuesday afternoon. 'But I felt like probably my last six to eight weeks in the big leagues were pretty good. 'And then I went down to Triple A and was enjoying playing every day and felt like I was getting into a little bit of a rhythm at the end there, as well. It's been an up-and-down journey, for sure.' That journey has taken Mead to the Chicago White Sox. He was acquired as part of the July 31 trade that sent starter Adrian Houser to the Tampa Bay Rays. 'I really appreciated my time in Tampa,' Mead said. 'But playing time was pretty limited. Excited for a new beginning, a new start.' After the deal, Mead went to Triple-A Charlotte — along with the two pitchers the Sox acquired from the Rays in Duncan Davitt and Ben Peoples. When third baseman/first baseman Miguel Vargas went on the injured list Sunday, the Sox called up Mead. He made his Sox debut on Tuesday, flying out to right field as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning of the 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Mead called the opportunity with the Sox 'special.' 'For another club to believe in you and give you another opportunity is definitely something you don't take for granted,' he said. '(The trade deadline) was challenging a little bit, but ultimately, it wasn't in my control. Just going out there in Triple A and trying to be the best version of myself and showcase myself to other teams.' Manager Will Venable said the Sox plan to have Mead available to 'mix and match.' 'He's a right-handed bat we like against lefties,' Venable said on Tuesday. Mead, 24, slashed .226/.318/.339 with three home runs, eight RBIs and 14 runs in 49 games with the Rays in 2025. He also played in 14 games with Triple-A Durham, where he had a .264/.339/.472 slash line with three homers, seven RBIs and 10 runs in 14 games. He had a productive two games with the Knights, going 4-for-7 with two doubles, three walks, two RBIs and two runs. In parts of three major-league seasons (2023-25) with the Rays, Mead slashed .238/.307/.322 with five home runs, 20 RBIs and 36 runs in 111 games. He has appeared in 42 games at second base, 40 at third, 20 at first and one at shortstop. Mead has had considerable success in the minors. He has a .298/.372/.506 slash line with 122 doubles, 57 home runs, 237 RBIs, 155 walks and 260 runs scored over parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues. A native of Adelaide, Australia, he was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an international free agent on May 4, 2018, before being traded to the Rays on June 24, 2019, in exchange for left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sánchez. Mead entered the 2024 season as the No. 55 overall prospect in baseball and 2023 as the No. 33 overall prospect. He was a member of the American League roster at the 2022 All-Star Futures Game. 'We've identified some things in his offensive game that we feel like we can try to tap into to make him a real impactful major-league player,' Sox general manager Chris Getz said during a video conference call following the July 31 trade deadline. Getz drew some similarities in the situations for Mead and Vargas, who the Sox picked up from the Los Angeles Dodgers last season as part of a three-team deal. 'A high-profile player that hadn't really translated or taken at the major-league level,' Getz said. 'Through his continued development, (Vargas) has now become a productive major-league player. We feel Curtis can do the same thing.' As for the pitching components of the trade with the Rays, Davitt allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings in his first start for Charlotte on Tuesday at Syracuse. Peoples has allowed two earned runs in two relief innings with the Knights. 'When you look at Davitt, he's been starting at Triple A, he'll do the same thing for us in Charlotte,' Getz said. 'And Peoples has a history of starting. This year he's been in the bullpen. We'll continue the bullpen route the remainder of 2025, but he has versatility and he could be a starter in the future as well.' Mead is looking forward to what's ahead in his future. 'I was excited with the opportunity to hopefully play a little bit more and play in front of different coaches and different players,' Mead said. 'It's a little bit of a breath of fresh air.'
