Apple says most US bound iPhones no longer made in China
Apple has reported first-quarter profit above expectations but warned that US tariffs could cost the company and were disrupting its supply chain.
Apple expects US tariffs to cost $900 million in the current quarter, even though their impact was "limited" at the start of this year, chief executive Tim Cook said on an earnings call.
Mr Cook said he expected "a majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin," adding that Apple's products were exempt from US President Donald Trump's most severe reciprocal tariffs for now.
"We are not able to precisely estimate the impact of tariffs, as we are uncertain of potential future actions prior to the end of the quarter," Mr Cook said.
"Assuming the current global tariff rates, policies and applications do not change for the balance of the quarter and no new tariffs are added, we estimate the impact to add $900 million to our costs."
Tit-for-tat exchanges have seen hefty US levies imposed on China, with Beijing setting retaliatory barriers on US imports.
High-end tech goods such as smartphones, semiconductors and computers received a temporary reprieve from US tariffs.
Although completed smartphones are exempted from Mr Trump's tariffs for now, not all components that go into Apple devices are spared, said independent tech analyst Rob Enderle.
"The more components are crossing borders, the most cost flows through to the device," Mr Enderle explained.
"In the end, this all adds up to an expensive mess," he said of the tariff situation.
While iPhones produced in mainland China still account for the majority of US shipments, production in India ramped up toward the end of the quarter.
Mr Cook said Vietnam would be the country of origin for almost all iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPod products sold in the US.
China will continue to be where most Apple products are made for sale outside the US, he insisted.
"What we learned some time ago was that having everything in one location had too much risk with it and so we have, over time with certain parts of the supply chain, opened up new sources of supply," Mr Cook told analysts.
"You could see that kind of thing continuing in the future."
Apple's revenue of $95.4 billion in the recently ended quarter was driven by iPhone sales, with the company reporting $24.8 billion profit for the quarter.
Apple shares were down more than 3% in after-market trading.
"The real story is in Tim Cook's plans to navigate these unprecedented trade challenges," said Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne.
Apple's plan to shift manufacturing to India "raises pressing questions about execution timeline, capacity limitations, and potentially unavoidable cost increases that will shrink margins, be passed to consumers, or have a mix of consequences," Mr Bourne added.

List of 60 phones WhatsApp will stop working on this month
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info WhatsApp is set to become obsolete on a range of older smartphones starting this month. The update, which kicked in from June 1, will see the app cease to function on devices over a decade old. Due to updates in WhatsApp's system requirements for operating systems, several aged smartphones will lose access to the widely-used messaging service amid security concerns. Originally slated for May, the implementation was deferred to June. iPhones that came out before or in 2014 and can't be updated to iOS version 15.1 are among those affected. For Android users, the cut-off is now OS 5.0, also from 2014. WhatsApp has been proactive, sending out notifications urging users to "update to the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp." These messages targeted individuals with iPhones running on any system older than iOS 15.1, reports the Liverpool Echo. Owners of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus, as well as previous models, will find themselves unable to meet the new iOS 18 requirement, rendering WhatsApp unusable on their phones post-update. Certain Android handsets, including Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z, will also lose the ability to support Meta's messaging platform. As per 9to5Mac, Meta's FAQ page explains that the discontinuation of support for these older models stems from their lack of recent security enhancements and features necessary for WhatsApp's operation. Apple deemed the iPhone 6 "obsolete" a little over a year ago, indicating that the company will cease to provide repairs or service for the device, and third-party service providers are unable to purchase parts for these products. Earlier in April, WhatsApp revealed twelve new features users could utilise. As the world's most popular messaging app, WhatsApp has an impressive user base of over two billion. WhatsApp mentioned in a blog on their website: "To keep you in the loop, we'll be sharing regular roundups of the latest updates, tools, and settings." A newly published roundup showcases recently introduced features that may have gone unnoticed. These updates include: Chats Real-time online indicator in group conversations: To let you know when others are available for a chat, the number of people currently 'online' is displayed under the group name in real-time. Customisable notification highlights within groups: Using the 'Notify for' feature and selecting 'Highlights,' you can limit notifications to @mentions, replies, and messages from favourite contacts. Opting for 'All' will let you receive all notifications. Event updates It is now possible to create events within 1:1 conversations on WhatsApp. Furthermore, users can RSVP with a 'maybe,' invite someone to join them, specify the end date and time of longer events, and have the option to pin an event to the chat. Tappable reactions Viewing everyone's reactions at once and choosing yours with just a tap is now possible. Document Scanning on iPhone You can now scan and send documents directly from WhatsApp on your iPhone. Simply select 'Scan document' from the attachment section and follow the instructions to scan, crop, and save the document. Default App for iPhone With the most recent iOS update, you can set WhatsApp as your default messaging and calling app on your iPhone. To do this, navigate to Settings > Default Apps and choose WhatsApp. Pinch to Zoom in Video Calls iPhone users can now use the pinch to zoom feature during a video call to get a closer look at their own or another person's video. Add to Call from a Chat You can add someone to an ongoing call directly from a chat thread by tapping the call icon at the top and selecting 'Add to call'. Enjoy Smoother Video Calls Efforts have been made to reduce dropped calls and video freezing. Improved bandwidth detection swiftly upgrades your video to HD quality for a more enjoyable experience. Video Notes for Channels Channel admins can now instantly record and share short videos (60 seconds or less) with followers, similar to chats. Voice Message Transcripts on Channels You can now receive a written summary of voice message updates from channels when you're on the move and unable to listen to them. QR Codes As a channel admin, you can now share a unique QR code that links directly to your channel, making it easier to share with others and expand your audience. Dublin paid half of State's 2024 income tax while Cork delivered most from corporates
Dublin accounted for the more than half the income tax and VAT receipts collected by Government last year while more than half of the State's record corporate tax take emanated from Cork. The Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) has published a new 'interactive dashboard' that provides a more detailed breakdown – by economic sector and county – of the Irish tax base. It shows that €16.2 billion of PAYE income tax in 2024, out of total of €29.6 billion, was paid by workers in Dublin. Consumers in the capital were also responsible for the lion's share of VAT receipts, paying €11.7 billion out of the €20.5 billion total collected from the sales tax. READ MORE Cork, however, was responsible for €21.4 billion of the State's record €39 billion corporate tax haul last year. The €39 billion included €11 billion of the Apple tax money, covering most of the money owed as a result of a high-profile European court ruling last September, plus Apple's annual corporate tax liability for 2024. The iPhone maker Cork's campus serves as its European headquarters and employs over 6,000 people. The company is the biggest payer of corporate tax in the Republic. Dublin was responsible for €14.1 billion of corporate tax in 2024, meaning Dublin and Cork combined made up €35.5 of the €39 billion total in business tax receipts collected last year. The next biggest county was Galway with €405 million. On a sector-by-sector basis, the PBO's dashboard shows the wholesale and retail trade sector accounted for the biggest lump of corporate tax receipts at €16.2 billion followed by manufacturing (€9.5 billion); information and communication (€6.2 billion); and financial and insurance activities (€4 billion). While much has been made of the State's lopsided corporate tax base, with just 10 firms providing more than half the receipts, the PBO's data show the same multinational-dominated sectors (wholesale and retail, manufacturing, information and communication and financial and insurance activities) accounted for €13.5 billion of the €29.6 billion paid in PAYE income tax last year. The purpose of the dashboard 'is to present net tax receipts data published by Revenue Commissioners in a visual and interactive manner,' the PBO said. 'In doing so, it aims to enhance members' and committees' understanding of tax revenues which are used to fund public services,' it said. A previous report by the PBO, which acts as the parliament's budgetary oversight body, showed the top 8 per cent of earners in Ireland account for more than 54 per cent of the income tax paid to the State.
