Khalid Jamil has been named the new head coach of the Indian Senior Men's National Football Team on a two-year contract, with the option of extending for another year, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on Wednesday.
He becomes the first Indian to take charge of the men's side since Savio Medeira in 2012. The manager has mutually parted ways with ISL club Jamshedpur FC.
A former India international midfielder, Jamil earned 15 caps for the national team, making his debut at the 1997 SAFF Championship in Nepal, which India won. He also represented the country in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and the 2001 Merdeka Tournament. At club level, he played for Mahindra United, Air India and Mumbai FC, winning the National Football League, two Federation Cups and two IFA Shields.
He also lifted the Santosh Trophy with Maharashtra in 1999.

Jamil's coaching career spans several Indian Super League and I-League teams, including Jamshedpur FC, NorthEast United FC, East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan AC, Mumbai FC and Aizawl FC. His most celebrated achievement came in 2016-17 when he led Aizawl FC to a historic I-League title. More recently, he guided Jamshedpur FC to the final of the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, and the semi-finals of the ISL Play-offs 2024/25 and the Kalinga Super Cup 2024.

The 48-year-old will work exclusively with the national team in a full-time capacity. His first training camp begins on August 15 at the Dravid-Padukone Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru, with the list of players to be announced soon. His opening assignment will be the CAFA Nations Cup, where India face hosts Tajikistan (August 29), IR Iran (September 1) and Afghanistan (September 4) in Group B.
Looking ahead to the challenge, Jamil told AIFF, 'I am both deeply proud and immensely privileged to have been entrusted with the responsibility of leading our national team. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to train Indian players, and I've grown to understand their strengths and weaknesses intimately. These insights will be fundamental to everything we do as we prepare for the CAFA Nations Cup and the upcoming crucial Asian Cup Qualifiers against Singapore.

'He Goes Out': Ashwin Points Out T20 World Cup Winner's Exclusion From Asia Cup Squad

Last Updated: Ravichandran Ashwin has spoken about Shreyas Iyer's potential inclusion for the Asia Cup, hinting that Shivam Dube may not fit into the squad despite his T20I experience. Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that if the selection committee decides to bring in Shreyas Iyer into the scheme of things for the upcoming Asia Cup, then Shivam Dube doesn't find a place, even though he was part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad last year. Ashwin feels that Dube, who has been a mainstay in India's T20I team for almost two years, doesn't fit in the scheme of things for the Asia Cup. Ashwin said that Iyer is the best candidate to bat at No. 3 in India's T20I XI, followed by Tilak Varma and captain Suryakumar Yadav, who might alternate given the situation of the game. 'Shreyas at 3. Surya and Tilak can float. Surya and Tilak can change between 4 and 5. If you are bringing Shreyas Iyer on the scheme of things, then Shivam Dube doesn't have a place," Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel. 'He (Dube) doesn't have a place. He can be in a backup position. Which we can discuss. Because if Shreyas Iyer, Surya and Tilak form your top 5, then it is 6 and 7. 6 and 7 is a block," Ashwin said. Dube scored 357 runs in 14 games for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, but his strike rate of 132.22 was his lowest in four years. Since Sanju Samson is more or less confirmed as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, Ashwin said that the backup keeper's spot could go to Jitesh Sharma. 'We have sent Sanju up (the order). So, we will have to discuss who the backup keeper is. There are many candidates for backup keeper. Last time, Dhruv Jhurel was there. KL Rahul is there. Rishabh Pant, I am not sure if he has recovered," Ashwin said. 'But on one hand, the real person that I think is going to walk into this Indian team is Jitesh Sharma. As per his IPL and the way he batted and he can play the role of a finisher. If Jitesh Sharma is your backup keeper, then Shivam Dube goes out of the window," Ashwin added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mohun Bagan refuse to release players for India camp

A day after crashing out of the Durand Cup, the Indian Super League champions have decided to put their foot down in releasing their players for the ongoing national camp in Bengaluru, citing the Jose Molina-managed team's own preparation of the AFC Champions League Two and dealing a blow to new India coach Khalid Jamil's preparations for the Central Asian Football Association Nations Cup. Of the 35-odd players picked by Jamil for the preparatory camp, Mohun Bagan have seven, the most from a single team. They are Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalengmawia Ralte 'Apuia', Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad and goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. East Bengal will take a call on releasing the trio after the tournament. India have been invited to play in the CAFA Nations Cup, co-hosted by Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and starting from Aug 29. This will be Jamil's first assignment as India coach. The AIFF had earlier sought cooperation from the clubs to release the players. But it has been learnt that essentially two factors — the federation's 'neglect' towards player welfare and the tournament being held outside the Fifa window — have forced the Bagan management to take a confrontational approach towards AIFF's request. AIFF Moves To Supreme Court Over Urgent Need For Clarity On ISL's Future Structure

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has approached the Supreme Court, highlighting the urgent need to resolve the uncertainty surrounding the future structure of Indian football's top-tier league, the Indian Super League (ISL). According to the federation, the matter came up for hearing on Monday morning after the Amicus Curiae informed the Court about the issue. The AIFF's senior counsel had also raised the development that the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 had been passed by both Houses of Parliament, terming it a critical point to be brought before the Supreme Court. The Court, while hearing verbal submissions, directed all parties to file written submissions before the next hearing scheduled for August 22. The AIFF, in its statement, said it will use this opportunity to present the "urgent need for commercial continuity and to determine the future structure of its top-tier league, keeping in mind the interests of its players, clubs, and other stakeholders whose livelihoods are at stake due to the current impasse."
