Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia kill 16, injure at least 35, Ukraine says
(Reuters) -Russia's multiple overnight strikes on the frontline region of Zaporizhzhia in southwestern Ukraine killed 16 and injured at least 35 people at a correctional facility, regional Ukrainian military and Zaporizhzhia's governor said on Tuesday Zaporizhzhia governor Ivan Fedorov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said that the correctional facility's buildings were destroyed, and nearby private homes were also damaged. Moscow forces have regularly attacked Zaporizhzhia, using drones, missiles and aerial bombs, since the start of the war that Russia started with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russia unilaterally declared early in the war its annexation of parts of Zaporizhzhia and areas in and around three other Ukrainian regions. Kyiv and its Western allies called the move an illegal land grab. Fedorov said that Russian forces launched eight strikes on the Zaporizhzhia district, reportedly using high-explosive aerial bombs. Reuters could not independently verify Ivanov's report. There was no immediate comment from Russia. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes, but thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. Ukrainian drone attack kills one in southern Russia
MOSCOW: A Ukrainian drone attack struck southern Russia, killing one person and damaging infrastructure, according to regional officials. The incident occurred as Kyiv intensifies efforts to counter Moscow's ongoing offensive. Yuri Sliusar, acting governor of the Rostov region, confirmed the fatality in a Telegram post. 'A car was damaged on Ostrovsky Street. Unfortunately, the driver who was in it died,' he said. The attack also targeted multiple locations, including Salsk, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Volgodonsk, Bokovsky, Tarasovsky, and Slyusar. Debris from the drone strike fell on Salsk station, damaging a freight train and a passenger train. Authorities evacuated passengers, with no additional casualties reported. The attack comes as Russia continues its summer offensive, making fresh advances in areas previously spared heavy fighting since the conflict began in 2022. Over the weekend, Russian forces claimed to have 'liberated the settlement of Maliyevka' in Dnipropetrovsk, weeks after seizing the first village in the region. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump issued Moscow an ultimatum, giving Russia 'about 10 or 12 days' to end the war in Ukraine or face severe sanctions. - AFP

Ukrainian drone attacks leave one dead, spark fire at train station in Rostov, Russia says
(Reuters) -Multiple Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia's southern Rostov region have left one person dead, sparked a fire and suspended train traffic at a railway station, Russian authorities said on Tuesday. Russia's defence ministry, which reports only how many drones were destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched, said its defence units downed a total of 74 drones overnight, including 22 over the Rostov region. In the town of Salsk, a car was damaged as a result of the attack, killing the driver, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. A stationary freight train caught fire and power was disrupted at the train station in Salsk, forcing the suspension of train traffic, Russia's Railways said on Telegram. Reuters could not independently verify the report. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which has often said that its attacks inside Russia are in response to Moscow's relentless strikes on Ukraine. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia started with its full-scale invasion in 2022. (Reporting by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Tom Hogue and Lincoln Feast.)
