Inspiring ride! Youth who worked as horse-mule handler in Kedarnath cracks IIT-JAM, to join IIT Madras

Mint17-07-2025
Atul Kumar, who carried pilgrims on horses and mules along the steep tracks of Kedarnath Dham to support his family, has cleared the IIT-Joint Admission Test for Master's (JAM) 2025 and got selected for IIT Madras.
Kumar, son of a horse handler, narrated his inspiring journey from a small village in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, to the prestigious technology institute.
He said his only motivation was to move ahead in life and do something better for himself and his family.
'I am from a small village in Rudraprayag... I did not know much till the 12th standard. There is not much awareness in hilly areas. I did not know that something like IITs even exists,' Kumar told ANI.
' I did not take the entrance exam after completing the 12th grade. But then I got to know through teachers that I could pursue a Master's degree from IIT. My teachers and friends supported me and motivated me a lot,' he added.
Talking about his preparation strategy, Kumar said he started preparing for the IIT-JAM exam in July last year, after returning from Kedarnath, and took help from his friend for notes.
'I began studying in July. I had just returned from Kedarnath, where I was working in June--there was no network, and we lived in tents, so studying was not possible. My friend Mahavir, who had previously prepared, helped me a lot by sharing his notes. I studied consistently till January, and the exam was in February,' he said.
'My biggest motivation was to move ahead in life -- to escape that place and create something better for myself.'
Kumar further said that his father works as a horse handler and it is the family's main livelihood. During holidays, Kumar used to help him. His elder sister is married, and the younger one has just completed her education.
'The response has been overwhelming. More than my own joy, it was the happiness on others' faces that touched me -- from teachers to people who never even taught me, everyone called to congratulate me. It feels good to bring pride to my community,' he added.

Temples Submerged At Ujjain's Ram Ghat After Torrential Rainfall In Madhya Pradesh

Heavy rains have lashed Ujjain over the past 24 hours, causing the Kshipra River to overflow and flood the Ram Ghat area, one of the holiest sites in the city. The rising river waters have submerged several temples situated along the ghat, disrupting religious activities and raising concerns among devotees and local residents. Visuals from the site show temple spires barely visible above the floodwaters, with platforms used for rituals and prayers completely underwater. Ram Ghat is not only a key pilgrimage spot for Hindus but also a major location for religious festivals like the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. #WATCH | Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh | Temples at the Ram Ghat inundated due to the heavy rain in the area. — ANI (@ANI) July 27, 2025 Local authorities have issued advisories to residents and tourists to avoid venturing close to the riverbank. 'We are closely monitoring the situation. So far, no casualties or major damage have been reported. Precautionary measures are being taken,' a district official said. Devotees who had come for early morning rituals had to be turned away, as access points to the ghat were blocked due to waterlogging and safety concerns. Meteorological officials have forecast more rain in the region over the next 48 hours, prompting alerts across low-lying areas of Ujjain. The city's disaster management team is on standby in case evacuation or rescue efforts become necessary. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by riverfront religious sites during monsoon season and the growing need for climate-resilient infrastructure in vulnerable heritage zones.

Hajj Yatra: Saudi government makes big change in Hajj pilgrimage rules, married couple will not be allowed to....

Hajj- File image Hajj pilgrimage 2026: In a significant update for Hajj pilgrims, the Saudi Arabia government has announced new rules for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. Under the recently announced 2026 Hajj pilgrimage, husbands and wives will no longer be allowed to stay in the same room. As per the rule, Male and female pilgrims will be accommodated separately, and men will not be permitted to enter women's rooms during the pilgrimage. Separating females and males of the family, these new regulations mark a major change in accommodation policy for Hajj. Earlier, the Haj Committee of India used to arrange shared rooms in rented hotels for pilgrims from the same state, often accommodating husbands and wives together depending on room size and availability. Notably, Hajj is a sacred pilgrimage that is required of every Muslim at least once in their lifetime, being one of the five pillars of Islam. Delhi Hajj Committee begin registration for Hajj 2026 In another important update for the Hajj pilgrims, Kausan Jahan, Chairperson of the Delhi Hajj Committee informed that registrations for Hajj 2026 commenced on July 7 and will conclude on July 31. As per the rules of the committee, the passports of the applicants should be valid until December 2026. Notably, as per the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the committee is committed to providing the best facilities to the Hajj pilgrims. 'Registration for Haj 2026 has begun. It will go on from 7 July to 31 July… The passports of applicants should be valid till 31 December 2026… The committee, as per the instructions of PM Narendra Modi, is committed to providing the best facilities to Haj pilgrims', Kausar Jahan told ANI. As per a report by ANI news agency, Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the Union Government will begin accepting applications for the Haj pilgrimage in 2026 within a week, urging pilgrims to ensure timely submissions of documents to avoid future complications ahead of the pilgrimage.
