Who's up, who's down in FedEx Cup Playoffs after Friday at FedEx St. Jude Championship

The pressure was ramped up at last week's Wyndham Championship and it's only getting more intense. We're talking about the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the battle to stay alive for East Lake. The regular season ended last week with the top 70 PGA Tour golfers advancing to this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Sunday night, golf's version of Survivor gets trimmed to the top 50. Through two days of action at TPC Southwind, things are taking shape, but there's the completion of the weather-delayed second round as well as the third and final rounds to be played. Who's up in the FedEx Cup Playoffs projected standings? Some of the big movers up include: St. Jude tournament leader Tommy Fleetwood, to No. 6 from No. 9. St. Jude first-round leader Akshay Bhatia, to No. 4 from No. 45. Justin Rose, to No. 12 from No. 25. Harry Hall, to No. 22 from No. 44. Bud Cauley, to No. 24 from No. 53. Perhaps the one taking most advantage of his week, Cauley is one of two golfers now projected to move into the top 50 for next week's BMW Championship. Thomas Detry, to No. 30 from No. 35. Like Cauley, Detry has moved into the top 30, which is the threshold to make the Tour Championship in two weeks. Si Woo Kim, to No. 31 from No. 46. Rickie Fowler, to No. 48 from No. 64. Fowler is another one of those who started the week outside the top 50 but has, for now, played his way into the BMW field. Who's down in the FedEx Cup Playoffs projected standings? And while some move up, others move down. Jake Knapp is one of those who was inside the top 50 but, as of Friday night, is not. He's down to No. 54 from No. 47. Min Woo Lee is the other. He started the week as the BMW 'Bubble Boy' at No. 50, but he's now at No. 56. Others going the wrong way so far include Viktor Hovland (down to No. 34 from No. 26), Sungjae Im (down to No. 38 from No. 29) What does the FedEx Cup Playoffs bubble look like? Jordan Spieth is now the BMW Bubble Boy as he's down two spots from No. 48. He's posted rounds of 69 and 70 and is just 1 under after 36 holes. Here's the last five in, first five out as of Friday night. No. 46 Wyndham Clark No. 47 Tom Hoge No. 48 Rickie Fowler No. 49 Aldrich Potgieter No. 50 Jordan Spieth No. 51 Kurt Kitayama No. 52 Joe Highsmith No. 53 J.T. Poston No. 54 Jake Knapp No. 55 Jhonattan Vegas

Tommy Fleetwood leads by four as second round suspended at FedEx St. Jude

Tommy Fleetwood joins Damon Hack from the FedEx St. Jude Championship to reflect on his back-to-back sub-65 rounds and details how he plans to stay composed for the final two rounds. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tommy Fleetwood had another big closing stretch Friday with four straight birdies, giving him a 6-under 64 and the 36-hole lead in the FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship with his sights set on an elusive PGA Tour title. So much attention is on the top 50 in the FedExCup who advance out of the first postseason event. Fleetwood is already locked in all the way to the finale at the Tour Championship. What he cares about is winning. 'It hasn't happened for me yet out on the PGA Tour, but I would much rather be up there and not quite get it done than not there at all,' Fleetwood said. 'And who knows? Maybe this weekend is the weekend and we'll see, and we'll crack on from there.' Fleetwood was at 13-under 127, four shots clear of Collin Morikawa (65) and Akshay Bhatia (69). Justin Rose also was at 9 under par after a birdie on the par-5 16th. Storms rolled into the area, forcing spectators to leave the course and halting play. The PGA Tour suspended the second round for the day at 6:15 p.m. EDT and announced play would resume at 8:30 a.m. EDT Saturday. The third round is expected to begin at 9:50 a.m., with players in threesomes off split tees. Fleetwood finished with four straight birdies on Thursday. He made three in a row early Friday, including a 30-footer from the fringe on the par-3 fourth hole at the TPC Southwind. He also had a pair of key par saves around the turn before going on another run. He holed a pair of 15-foot birdie putts on the 13th and 14th. He stuffed a wedge to 5 feet for birdie on the 15th. And then he reached the par-5 16th in two and two-putted from about 30 feet for a fourth straight birdie. The only bogey came at the final hole when he went from the bunker into thick rough, and the safe shot from there was some 50 feet long of the pin. 'Of course, when you shoot two good scores, it's easy to say everything has been going well,' Fleetwood said. 'But I think for the most part I've been very good off the tee, put myself in position to have a go at the course. My iron play has been good and solid, and I've rolled the ball well.' Kurt Kitayama had the low score of the round at 63, moving him to the top five on the leaderboard as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change. The FedExCup playoffs were an afterthought until two weeks ago. He was at No. 110 until winning the 3M Open in Minnesota. Now he's at No. 52 and the next goal is to move on to the BMW Championship next week outside Baltimore. It's hard not to pay attention to the top 50 this week because along with advancing in the postseason, anyone in the top 50 is assured of being in all eight of the $20 million signature events next year. 'I feel like everyone is for the most part,' Kitayama said. 'But you can't control what everyone else is doing. If you play well, it's going to take care of itself. That's kind of my mindset. But yeah, I'm peeking over quite a bit at the scoreboard.' Golf Channel Staff, There's no need for Scottie Scheffler to look. The PGA and Open champion is so far ahead in the FedEx Cup he is assured of staying at the top this week. That doesn't mean he's cruising along without a care. Scheffler was slowed by three bogeys on the back nine, landing in rough that swallowed up his golf ball and left him visibly frustrated. He still shot a 66 and was six shots behind. Jordan Spieth had an 8-foot par putt on the final hole that turned toward the cup and looked to be falling from gravity alone when it hung on the edge. That about summed up his day of three bogeys, three birdies and a 70 that left him 12 shots behind and facing plenty of stress for the weekend as he tries to avoid a second straight year outside the top 50. Bud Cauley, one spot behind Kitayama in the FedExCup at No. 53, shot 69 and was in a tie for seventh when play was suspended. Fleetwood is No. 15 in the world with seven wins on the European tour against some of the stronger fields. He has thrived on a big stage overseas, particularly the Ryder Cup. It's just that small matter of a PGA Tour title. He was on the verge in late June at the Travelers Championship until a stunning flip at the end, when he took three putts from just short of the green for bogey and Keegan Bradley made birdie to beat him. 'Right now I would love to just go and sulk somewhere and maybe I will do,' he said that Sunday at the Travelers. 'But there's just no point making it a negative for the future really, just take the positives and move on.' He gets another chance on the weekend at the TPC Southwind, still only the halfway point but at least there with a chance and in command of his game from tee-to-green.

Scottie Scheffler chicken shack gives fans 'Happy Gilmore 2' arrest experience

MEMPHIS — Scottie Scheffler was in a concession tent next to the St. Jude Pavilion near the 18th hole at TPC Southwind posing for photos with everyone who came up to him on Friday. It wasn't the real Scheffler, who is competing in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. This was a photo with Scheffler on a bench in a jail cell, mimicking one of his most memorable scenes from the "Happy Gilmore 2" film. In the scene, Scheffler was told he could get a phone call after sitting in the cell for three days. After learning that inmates would be having chicken tenders for dinner, Scheffler voluntarily stayed in jail. Scottie's Chicken Shack, presented by Netflix, is available at TPC Southwind for the 2025 tournament, offering chicken tenders for guests. And of course, there's a local touch. Honey gold and lemon pepper are among the options. Sam Maddox, a student at Rhodes College, was working at a nearby tent when he decided to try out the chicken tenders. A Little Rock, Arkansas, native, he dipped into the Memphis honey gold sauce for the first time. "It's really good," Maddox said. "It's almost like the perfect name for it. That's exactly what it is." Behind the counter, several employees were wearing uniforms similar to correctional and police officers. The scene from the movie humorously references Scheffler's 2024 PGA Championship arrest in Louisville. Now that the chicken shack is gaining notoriety, more and more fans are coming over. Maddox was stopping by on his lunch break, but he made sure to tell his father, who is also a Scheffler fan. Some fans are grabbing a plate of chicken tenders, and others are just posing for a photo. "Last night I saw that it was posted, so we wanted to find it today," Scheffler fan Justin Scobey said of the tent. Scobey, a Memphis native, said he knows his chicken, citing his fandom for Gus's fried chicken. He didn't have enough time to try out the chicken at the tent since he was trying to catch Scheffler on the front nine, but he made sure to lie across the bench and lean into the photo with Scheffler. "I think you got to match it," Scobey said. Damichael Cole is the Memphis Grizzlies beat writer for The Commercial Appeal.
