
‘Vital' that British steel gets Trump tariff deal after UK-US trade pact, say unions
Steel trade unions have said it is 'absolutely vital' that the UK rapidly secures a deal to protect the sector from Donald Trump's tariffs, after the industry was excluded from an initial UK-US pact signed last night.
Keir Starmer and Trump signed off a UK-US trade deal at the G7 summit in Canada, with the US president saying Britain would have protection against future tariffs 'because I like them'.
The car industry was relieved that tariffs on the sector will be reduced to 10% from 27.5%. The UK aerospace sector will face no tariffs at all from the US after deal, which followed an initial agreement made in May.
However, the announcement of the deal did not include the removal of tariffs on steel imports. UK steelmakers still face 25% tariffs, although this is lower than the global tariff of 50% imposed by the Trump administration on other nations.
The UK business department said the two leaders had pledged to 'make progress towards 0% tariffs on core steel products as agreed'.
Alasdair McDiarmid, the assistant general secretary of the steel union Community, welcomed the progress that has been made on reaching a deal on steel.
'However, it's now absolutely vital that a deal for steel is secured as soon as possible,' he said. 'Our steel producers and their US customers need an end to the current state of uncertainty to allow normal business to resume.
'Crucially, we must see a full exemption for all UK steel exports to the US – without that guarantee some of our leading steel businesses could be left behind, with a threat to jobs and livelihoods.'
A steel industry source said the automotive deal had been widely expected to be completed before steel and aluminium. However, the person said 'we now need steel to happen pretty quickly' to avoid the risk of 50% tariffs kicking in on 9 July, under the terms of the UK's temporary exemption.
Ministers have been working to ensure the UK's biggest steelmaker, Tata Steel, is included in tariff-free access to the US. Its bosses fear that the deal could end up excluding Indian-owned Tata Steel, which runs the vast Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales, because of the origin of some of its products. The company exports more than $100m (£74m) worth of goods to the US every year.

Separately, British Steel has secured a new five-year supply contract with Network Rail worth more than £500m, under which British Steel will supply between 70,000 and 80,000 tonnes of rail a year. McDiarmid welcomed the extension but expressed concern that 'British Steel's share of the Network Rail contract is set to reduce significantly'.
Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme he hoped the new 10% tariff rate for UK carmakers would start 'in the next few days'.
The UK-US trade pact had been negotiated in early May, 'but we've been waiting for it to be implemented so manufacturers can start shipping without being subject to those punitive tariffs', he said.
He added that 'a lot less' had been exported to the US in the meantime, and some UK manufacturers had halted shipments. British luxury carmakers Jaguar Land Rover and Bentley are among those that paused shipments.
'They've been pausing because their customers – we've got shrewd customers – were going to wait and see what was going to happen,' Hawes said. 'You could see that the cost to the ultimate consumer was going to come down because of the reduction in the tariff, but you just didn't know when.'
He expressed confidence that the new tariffs would be in place for some time, saying that 'it's been long negotiated and as the president says, he likes the UK'. He noted that UK exports have never been a threat to the US, as they tend to be small volume, high value manufactured goods, 'not the type that are made in the US'.

The latest data comes just days after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer insisted his welfare reforms must be pushed through, repeating his assertion that the system as it stands is not working. The Government has faced a backlash from its own MPs over the package of measures, which ministers argue will help the disabled and long-term sick back into work. Dozens of Labour MPs last month urged Sir Keir to pause and reassess planned cuts, saying the proposals were 'impossible to support'. The plans, which include tightening eligibility for the personal independence payment (Pip) benefit, are hoped by the Government to save around £5 billion a year. The latest data, published by the Department for Work and Pensions on Tuesday, showed there were a record 3.74 million people in England and Wales claiming Pip as of April this year. The figure is up from 3.69 million in January and a jump of 200,000 from 3.54 million a year earlier. Data for Pip claimants begins in January 2019, when the number stood at 2.05 million. Pip is a benefit aimed at helping with extra living costs if someone has a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability and difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of their condition. Teenagers and young adults account for a growing proportion of those getting Pip. Some 16.5% of claimants in April this year were aged 16-19, up from 14.6% in April 2019. There has been a similar rise for the 30-44 age group, which accounted for 21.0% in April this year, up from 18.9% in April 2019. By contrast, 45-59 year-olds made up 29.9% of claimants in April, down from 37.2% in 2019. The figure for 60-74 year-olds has risen slightly over this period, from 29.3% to 30.8%. Speaking at the weekend, Sir Keir made clear his intention to push ahead with the reforms. Asked whether there would be further concessions, the PM said: 'Well we have got to get the reforms through and I have been clear about that from start to finish. 'The system is not working, it's not working for those that need support, it's not working for taxpayers. 'Everybody agrees it needs reform, we have got to reform it and that is what we intend to do.' It is thought the restrictions on Pip would slash benefits for about 800,000 people. Ms Kendall previously said there are 1,000 new Pip awards every day – 'the equivalent of adding a city the size of Leicester every single year'. Why target-date funds are great IRA investments
Why do target-date funds make ideal IRA investments? Here to discuss this topic is Jason Kephart, a senior principal with Morningstar's manager research team. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. Q: Target-date funds tend to be great investments for an IRA, because if investors choose the target-date fund that fits their time horizon, then that IRA effortlessly fits in with the rest of a portfolio. Delve into that. A: Target-date funds are a great set-it-and-forget-it for investors who don't want to spend a lot of time thinking about: How much of my portfolio should be in stocks versus bonds? What funds should I pick to fill those buckets?The target date takes all that off the hands of investors. The other beauty is regular rebalancing, so your portfolio doesn't get out of whack. As you age and get closer to retirement, your portfolio should be getting a little bit more conservative—because you don't want to have a lot of risk at retirement, but you do want to have a lot of risk when you're young and have a huge time horizon in front of you. This takes care of all that for you, so it's a great option for anyone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time managing their investments. Q: Vanguard was in the headlines lately after making some sizable distributions from some of its target-date funds. Although Vanguard's distributions may have been big, target-date funds, in general, aren't great investments for taxable accounts. Talk about why. A: They'repredominantly designed for 401(k) plans, which is mostly where the assets are. And tax-advantaged accounts, like an IRA, aren'treally thinking about taxes. Sothe bond portfolio, which tends to be taxable bonds, that income is taxed at an ordinary rate. Also, we talked about rebalancing, which is when you sell your winners and buy your losers. Anytime you're selling your winners, that's going to trigger a taxable event. In a 401(k) or an IRA, you don't have to worry about those. In a taxable account, it could be kind of a headache. Q: A lot of investors already have a relationship with a brokerage or an asset manager. Can they feel comfortable going with whomever they already have that relationship with? Or does it pay to shop around? A: It always pays to look at your options, but I would caution that a lot of brokerages will take steps to steer you toward their own offerings. And that may mean additional fees may be charged if you pick a different target-date fund, which couldkind of kill the value proposition. What we've seen with target-date funds is that the return differences can be narrow, soadditionalfees could make a significant difference. Q: What are some key questions that investors should be asking before they invest in a target-date fund? A: You want to know what the glide path looks like and whether it fits your risk tolerance at different stages in life, which could be difficult to know early on. A 25-year-old probably isn't going to have a good sense of what their risk tolerance is going to look like at 60, but the shape of the glide path really does matter. You also want to understand the underlying funds. Are they index funds, actively managed funds, or a combo of both? Maybe you have a preference. The other thing you want to think about is fees.
