MUSCAT: Nama Water Services is moving forward with its strategic projects to integrate essential services and enhance the infrastructure system across Oman's governorates and wilayats.
These projects include the sanitation sector, which covers sewage networks, treatment plants and pumping stations, as well as treated water networks.
Among the most prominent projects currently being implemented in Muscat Governorate are a package of seven sanitation network projects in the Wilayat of Bausher, with a total cost of RO 123 million.
Eng Jaafer bin Muhanna al Hadrami, Project Manager for the Second Unit in Muscat Governorate, explained that the ongoing projects in Bausher include main and sub-lines for sanitation networks, totalling 311 kilometres in length. This also includes a 34-kilometre potable water network and other project components and annexes.
In a statement to ONA, he said that the construction of a sanitation network in Bausher Heights is currently underway at a cost of RO 17.5 million. The project, which will benefit 60,000 people, is expected to be completed in 2028 after a four-year implementation period. It includes 68 kilometres of sanitation networks, 1,100 inspection chambers, and 6,850 household connections. He noted that the project is currently 10 per cent complete.
He added that a sanitation network construction project is also being implemented in South Al Athaiba at a cost of RO 5.6 million. This project will benefit 13,000 people and is expected to be completed in 2027 over a three-year period. It involves 49 kilometres of sanitation networks, 1,714 inspection chambers, and 722 household connections, with a completion rate of 12 per cent.
Eng Jaafer al Hadrami confirmed that work continues on the first phase of the sanitation network rehabilitation project in North Al Ghubra and North Al Athaiba, with a cost of RO 24 million. The project was awarded at the end of June and is expected to begin implementation after mid-September 2025.
With a four-year timeline, it is set to be completed in 2028. The project involves a four-kilometre main sanitation line, the replacement of 812 inspection chambers, and the rehabilitation of the existing four-kilometre main line that connects the sanitation networks of North Al Ghubra and Al Athaiba to the pumping station, as well as the replacement of 80 deep inspection chambers.
He said that to enhance pumping operations for the ongoing projects, Nama Water Services is currently implementing a pumping station project in Bausher and Al Ansab at a cost of RO 21 million.
Expected to be completed in 2028 over a four-year period, the project includes a pumping station with two 17-kilometre force mains and a 3.5-kilometre gravity-fed sanitation line to collect from the Al Ansab and Bausher networks.
The Project Manager for the Second Unit at Nama Water Services in Muscat added that the company is continuing to implement the sanitation network project in Al Ansab, which is 8 per cent complete.
It includes 4,180 household connections and is expected to be completed in 2028 over a four-year period. The project comprises 75.5 kilometres of sanitation networks and 1,160 inspection chambers, with an implementation cost of RO 25.7 million.
In the Al Khuwair area of the Wilayat of Bausher, Eng Jaafer bin Muhanna al Hadrami mentioned that two projects are being implemented: Al Khuwair Project 1/17, at a cost of RO 14.3 million. It will include 882 household connections and is expected to be completed in 2029 over a five-year period. The project involves 30 kilometres of sanitation networks, a 15-kilometre potable water network, and a one-kilometre treated water network.
The second project, he added, is Al Khuwair Project 2/17, costing RO 15 million. It will include 858 household connections and is also expected to be completed in 2029 over a five-year period.
This project features 30 kilometres of sanitation networks, a 19-kilometre potable water network and a 2.2-kilometre treated water network. — ONA

Oman signs mining deals worth RO 192 million

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has signed three new exploration and mining agreements with two specialised companies, marking a significant step in strengthening Oman's mining sector, maximising the added value of mineral resources and attracting investment to priority geological areas. The agreements are part of the government's wider strategy to diversify the economy, boost local manufacturing and create sustainable job opportunities for Omanis. The first agreement grants Gulf Mineral Materials Company exploration and mining rights in Concession Area 11-C, located in Al Buraimi Governorate. Spanning 1,089 square kilometres, the concession is distinguished by its ophiolite rock series, with promising indicators of copper and chromium ore deposits. The initial phase of the project, expected to last two to three years, will involve topographical mapping, geochemical and geophysical surveys, as well as drilling and exploratory trenching to determine the commercial viability of mining operations. The second and third agreements, signed with Novel Muscat International Company, cover Concession Areas 51-G1 and 51-G2 in Al Wusta Governorate. In Area 51-G2, covering 30 km², the company will develop an integrated industrial project that includes a plant to produce salts and sodium carbonate (soda ash) using seawater transported to evaporation basins for drying and processing. In Area 51-G1, which extends over 558 km², a hydrated lime production facility will be established. Initial work will focus on identifying the location, quality and reserves of raw materials within geological formations rich in silica, limestone and various clays. Combined, these projects represent a total investment of RO 192 million ($500 million), including the cost of establishing industrial facilities, conducting feasibility studies and implementing mining plans in line with international standards. Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, stressed that the mining sector is a key driver of Oman's economic growth and diversification. He noted that these agreements reflect the ministry's commitment to attracting high-quality investments that can transform raw mineral resources into advanced manufacturing industries, thereby supporting national value chains and opening new opportunities for local talent. Abdullah bin Ahmed al Hadi, CEO of Gulf Mineral Materials, highlighted the company's track record, including its successful development of the ferrochrome plant in Suhar in partnership with international strategic partners. The facility's production capacity is set to increase to 7,200 tonnes per month by 2026, with a focus on operational sustainability, technology localisation and SMEs participation. Hamoud bin Said al Aufi, Managing Director of Novel Muscat International, emphasised that the projects will contribute to Oman's manufacturing sector by producing high-value products locally, generating skilled employment and supporting sustainable development. The ministry views these agreements as part of its long-term vision to build an integrated, globally competitive mining industry that enhances Oman's position as a regional hub for advanced mineral-based industries.

SEZAD plants over 11,800 trees in Duqm to boost green spaces

Duqm – The Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD) has implemented extensive afforestation plans from 2015 to mid-2025, planting 11,812 trees and creating nearly 49,000 sq m of green spaces at a cost of RO 4.4mn. During the preparatory phase (2015–2021), 3,414 trees were planted, 24,760 sq m of green areas were developed, and modern irrigation systems were installed, with many sites connected to treated wastewater networks. The first phase (2021–2025) saw the planting of 8,398 trees, 24,144 sq m of green spaces, and the launch of Duqm's first agricultural nursery to supply thousands of seedlings annually. Key sites include Sultan Qaboos bin Said Street, Airport Street, Sai's commercial district park, and the tourist beach park. SEZAD officials said the initiative improves the local climate, reduces sandstorm effects, and provides recreational spaces, enhancing Duqm's appeal as a sustainable, investment-friendly city. The next phase will expand afforestation projects and irrigation networks to further strengthen its environmental and tourism potential.
