MLB rumors: Reds, Giants urged to be ‘aggressive' trade deadline buyers
The MLB trade deadline is nearly here, and several teams are looking for players to bolster rosters. An anonymous MLB executive tells The Athletic that two teams who should be buying right now are the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants.
'One rival executive proclaimed the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants should be aggressive buyers, saying it's 'open season' on the third NL wild card because of the San Diego Padres' uncertain hold on the position,' Ken Rosenthal wrote.
There are several solid teams in the National League this year. The Reds and Giants are two of those clubs, and both of them are within striking distance of a Wild Card spot. As of Saturday, the Padres had the final playoff berth in the National League.
Anything can happen though, as there are still several weeks of baseball still to play.
'The Padres entered Saturday with four straight losses, a 3-5 record against the Washington Nationals, Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals since the break and a 41-46 mark since starting the season 14-3,' Rosenthal added. 'And, in the exec's opinion, Padres general manager A.J. Preller 'doesn't really have the money or the farm system for big additions.'
The Reds and Giants have both been surprises this year
The Reds have quietly kept pace in the National League Central this season. Cincinnati's strong pitching has kept them in games. Cincinnati is 12th in Major League Baseball this year in team ERA, with a 3.85 mark. The club is 56-50 and third in the NL Central, after winning Sunday.
Cincinnati is still shopping for bullpen help and a middle-of-the-order bat, Rosenthal said.
San Francisco, meanwhile, has been quite active in the trade market already. New Giants executive Buster Posey made a trade with the Boston Red Sox already this year for Rafael Devers. The team is likely not done making deals, with the trade deadline soon approaching on July 31.
'The Giants, however, plan to buy, seeking a second baseman and starting pitcher,' Rosenthal added.
Things haven't gone well recently for the Giants. The team has lost eight of their last 10 games. San Francisco plays the New York Mets on Sunday night.

It's a fun one! ⚾️ NL batting title: Chasing .300 Never before in MLB's 150-year history has a batting champion in either league finished the season with an average under .300. Could that change this year? Where it stands: Plenty of AL players are over the threshold, but just one NL player — Dodgers catcher Will Smith — is hitting comfortably above .300 at the moment (.325). The problem, though, is that he's right on the edge of not having enough plate appearances to qualify. In order to qualify for the batting title, you must accumulate at least 3.1 plate appearances per team game, which comes to 502 across a full season. Smith is at 3.12 right now, and as a catcher who doesn't play every day he could easily fall below the requisite 502. Behind Smith are a host of players straddling .300, led by Padres 3B Manny Machado (.302), Marlins OF Kyle Stowers (.298) and Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman (.297). If Smith doesn't qualify, and no one else tops .300 on the final day of the season, voilà. If he ends the season under 502 PAs, the balance will be made up with hitless at-bats (i.e. if he's 10 PA shy, 10 hitless at-bats would be added to his total). If he still leads the league after that, the batting title is his. 📸 Through the lens Baltimore — There are "Web Gems," and then there's what Orioles centerfielder Cedric Mullins has done in the last five days, robbing the Blue Jays of home runs on Wednesday and Monday after taking away extra bases with this absurd diving grab over the weekend. Is this farewell? The 30-year-old outfielder, who's been an Oriole since they selected him in the 13th round of the 2015 draft, is a popular trade candidate ahead of tonight's deadline. If this is farewell, he certainly gave fans in Baltimore quite a week to remember him by. Minneapolis — MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier (30 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks) and the Lynx held on late for a 100-93 win over the Liberty in a rematch of last year's WNBA Finals. Different directions: While first-place Minnesota (23-5) improved to a perfect 5-0 after a loss, the defending champion Liberty (17-9) lost their third straight game and learned that Breanna Stewart will be sidelined indefinitely with a bone bruise in her knee. Singapore — French superstar Léon Marchand, who won five medals (including four golds) at last summer's Olympics, shattered Ryan Lochte's world record in the 200m individual medley (1:52.69) in Wednesday's world championship semifinal. Steelers make practice time change for Thursday, dodging rain
This story initially appeared on With showers and thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers have moved their training camp practice at St. Vincent College on Thursday, July 31 to the morning. The Steelers originally had been scheduled to practice at 1:55 p.m. at Chuck Noll Field. Instead, they will move their practice session to 10 a.m. The Steelers already had one practice session this week that was washed out because of rain. New York Giants great Tiki Barber joins WFAN's pre-, postgame broadcasts
On Wednesday, the New York Giants and WFAN announced an extension of their play-by-play partnership. As part of that extension, all preseason, regular season, and postseason games will continue to air on WFAN (101.9 FM / 66AM) and the Audacy app. "Big Blue Kickoff Live," a weekly preview show, will also continue to air throughout the regular season. Additionally, and perhaps most notably, retired Giants great Tiki Barber will join John Schmeelk as a co-host for all pre- and postgame gameday broadcasts. "WFAN and The New York Giants are two of the most successful sports brands in the tri-state area, and we're honored to continue this long-standing partnership for the fans of Big Blue," said Chris Oliviero, Chief Business Officer and New York Market President, Audacy. 'More programming, exclusive experiences and of course Tiki, will make the seasons ahead all the more special." Barber, who has been with WFAN since 2022, is thrilled about the opportunity and will continue as co-host for "Evan & Tiki." "I am really excited to be joining the Giants gameday radio broadcast team on WFAN. This organization has meant so much to me, professionally and personally," said Barber. "The Giants have a long history of legendary broadcasters and Wellington Mara always told them to call it like they see it because our fans know better. I look forward to providing analysis and insight that Giants fans appreciate." On the same day as the WFAN announcement, it was revealed that Barber would no longer continue in his role as game analyst for "NFL on CBS," where he had served since 2019. "Our mission is to provide our fans with the best Giants coverage across all content mediums," said Nilay Shah, Giants SVP, Marketing & Brand Strategy. "The ability to create year-round programming around tentpole NFL events, along with adding Tiki Barber's expertise on gamedays to our already talented roster of former players, is a win for our fans." WFAN also announced it will be doing Giants ticket giveaways for listeners throughout the year.
