Bristol International Balloon Fiesta to return after "challenging" years
The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will return this year despite operating at a loss, organisers have said. The iconic event, which sees more than 100 balloons take off from Ashton Court Estate, will take place over three days rather than four as organisers try to make savings amid rising costs.Ben Hardy, executive director, said: "The last few years have been undeniably challenging and bringing the fiesta back in 2024 took real blood, sweat and tears but the incredible support from the public and business community has been truly reassuring."This year's 47th edition of the balloon fiesta will take place from 8 - 10 August.
Rising costs, poor weather and the coronavirus pandemic have blighted the free, not-for-profit festival which was shortened from four days to three last year to reduce its deficit. The three-day model helped cut its losses by £80,000, and organisers hope it will break even this year after teaming up with new sponsor, accountancy firm Albert Goodman."With their support, we're excited to introduce new programmes, initiatives, and features that will not only enhance the visitor experience but also celebrate Bristol and its deep-rooted connection to the world of hot air ballooning," said Mr Hardy.
As well as the mass ascents and nightglows, a new immersive experience called 'In The Clouds' will be introduced this year.It will feature a cold-inflated hot air balloon that visitors can step inside, with a soundscape replicating the experience of pilots in flight. An extension of the event, Fiesta Week, will not go ahead but will be replaced with a Schools Tether Roadshow, which will bring hot air balloons directly into city communities and schools.

It features Pisco, Chandon sparkling wine, raspberry-infused Aperol, pineapple oleo, and soda. Agustina Vigo explains why it remains on the menu: 'The Hardy offers a more sophisticated experience than the traditional Aperol Spritz, with sweet notes of coconut and raspberry, while preserving the freshness of the classic—elevating its flavor to a new level.'

Tom Hardy fans have just days to watch Netflix gangster movie
Hardy's career-defining casting as a 1960s gangster is a must-watch before it leaves Netflix The 2015 biographical drama is set to leave from Netflix at the end of May, which means Tom Hardy fans just days to catch the crime drama. Based on the lives of 1960s London gangsters, the Kray twins, Legend is a film that saw Hardy play both of the leading roles. Identical twins Ronald and Reginald, better known as Ronnie and Reggie, were notorious criminals operating in and around Bethnal Green from the 1950s, right up until their arrests in 1968. The troublesome two were involved in various criminal activities, from armed robberies to 'protection rackets', where they're off in exchange for people's safety, and eventually even murder. They headed up a local gang and even owned a Knightsbridge nightclub, called Esmeralda's Barn, which went on to be a celebrity hotspot and features heavily in the film. Sharing their thoughts on the movie, a Rotten Tomatoes reviewer wrote: "Unreal movie. Tom Hardy gives two of the best performances of his career at once here. "Christopher Eccleston is amazing here; he's been one of my favourite English actors since I saw him in Doctor Who. It's really fun to see the Krays fight each other knowing that Tom Hardy is playing both of them – just a masterclass in visual effects." Viewers have praised the performance of Hardy as the Kray twins, and some even consider it to be his "best work". One review claimed: "I already love Tom Hardy to death; putting two of him in one movie is outright cheating! "Legend offers a gripping portrayal of the infamous Kray twins, brought to life through Tom Hardy's remarkable dual performance. His ability to distinctly embody both Ronnie and Reggie Kray is nothing short of impressive, showcasing his exceptional range as an actor." Starring alongside the A-lister are Emily Browning, Taron Egerton, David Thewlis and Christopher Eccleston, as well as other familiar faces. Not to mention, the film sees surprising appearances from the famous British singer Duffy. Aside from Hardy, the real star of the show here is the 1960s London backdrop which drew many viewers into the film. One viewer said: "Brilliantly captures 60s London and the Krays' story." Another shared that they felt the film's atmosphere perfectly captured the "gritty and volatile essence" of the era. Despite its high praises, the film only boasts a 60% overall rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A less-satisfied review states: "Based on the true story of the gangsters the Kray brothers, the film should have been a perfect showcase for hunky Tom Hardy's creative range and talent. Instead, it's a half-realised piece of Hollywood entertainment that never goes deep enough to be anything spectacular." For those wanting a double dose of Hardy, you can watch Legend on Netflix until May 30.

Antiques Roadshow expert praises Netflix's Bridgerton as guest taken aback by 'unusual' necklace's real worth
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Antiques Roadshow. An Antiques Roadshow expert believes the rising popularity of certain period pieces of jewellery was sparked by Netflix's romantic drama, Bridgerton. The BBC daytime series ventured to Londonderry where more guests brought in their beloved items to find out more about them and just how much they're worth. Jewellery expert Joanna Hardy was on hand when a woman came in with a stand-out necklace. Hardy commented: 'Jewellery always catches my attention but there will be different reasons why it catches my attention. 'And this is because of its age and rarity. How did you get this?' 'Well it's been in the family since the 1950s. I believe my aunt bought it in Dublin,' the owner replied, as she went on to clarify that it was purchased at an antiques shop. Hardy asked: 'And did she know what she had?' To this, the guest shared: 'Not really, no. She just liked the piece I think, and she just thought it was quite unusual and that took her eye.' (Image: BBC) Focussing on the necklace itself, the specialist elaborated: 'This is a very long chain and this is Georgian period, so we're talking late 1820s. So it's nearly 200-years-old. 'It's a belcher link chain or we call it a muff chain and a muff chain is literally when they would have a gold chain and at the end, they would attach it to a muff. 'And you can see this beautiful decoration work, it's very light in weight. 'The Californian Gold Rush was in 1848 so prior to that, the gold pieces were very light, because there wasn't much gold around.' Hardy then spoke of the reasons why she liked this piece 'so much', remarking: 'It hasn't been chopped up into bracelets. 'And so often long chains will have been divided up amongst the family over time.' (Image: BBC) She then unexpectedly brought the influence of television into the conversation: 'There's also a TV series called Bridgerton which has really made Georgian jewellery really popular. 'So, of course, you know it's 200-years-old, so there has to be some wear and tear. 'And if I look in between the links, you can see the wear which is natural wear over the ages because it's been loved.' Concluding her appraisal, the expert remarked: 'So, at auction, because these items are so popular, you'd be looking at about £5,000.' The guest's eyes widened upon hearing the figure, pulling a face as she said: 'Wow, that's a shock!' She then took a brief moment before she added: 'That's a big shock. A big shock. A nice shock but a big shock.' Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
