Downtown L.A.'s infamous graffiti towers are being immortalized in a new Tony Hawk game
The graffiti towers' appearance is actually part of a much more upbeat announcement: The Los Angeles-inspired level in the upcoming Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 will include a detailed recreation of Miracle Mile's much-loved El Rey Theatre. Thanks to a collaboration between publisher Activision and promoter AEG Presents, both Goldenvoice and the Roxy will have billboards in the level, as well.
But the announcement footage for the El Rey's inclusion came with one unmissable detail: a graffiti-covered skyscraper looming in the background that looks unmistakably like the beleaguered Oceanwide Plaza buildings.
If you're wondering what a Mid-Wilshire theater is doing next to a DTLA high-rise, the remake of the early-aughts skateboarding game's L.A. level is kind of a pastiche of local landmarks. (And the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 didn't include the El Rey in that space but an adult movie theater instead.) Pershing Square's purple tower is immediately recognizable, as is the Biltmore across the street and the car wash by L.A. Live. You can also spot the U.S. Bank Tower, the L.A. Central Library and some fictional earthquake-damaged freeway overpasses.
The latest Tony Hawk remake releases on July 11, but ahead of that on May 8, there'll be a livestream hosted out of the El Rey to reveal more information about the game—with performances from Danny Brown, Lupe Fiasco, Adolescents and Urethane, no less. (We've reached out to Activision to find out if average Angelenos can purchase tickets to the in-person event, which has been dubbed THPS Fest.)
You'll find plenty of folks musing online about whether Oceanwide Plaza will be scrubbed of graffiti or demolished altogether by the time the 2028 Olympics arrive in L.A. But, you know, worst case, these Tony Hawk remakes have suddenly made us realize that— forget the Sepulveda Basin —L.A.'s abandoned graffiti towers just might be the perfect place to stage Olympic skateboarding.

Veteran's family in legal war against Katy Perry 'will still flight' for Orlando Bloom to testify as they prepare to face off with singer
A war veteran and his family who have been embroiled in a years-long legal battle with Katy Perry over her $15 million Montecito mansion will soon get their day in court with the singer - but they want to face off with Orlando Bloom too. Chart Westcott, the Attorney-in-Fact for his 85-year-old ailing father Carl, has told the Daily Mail that his family will continue to fight after a Los Angeles judge excused the actor from taking the witness stand during Friday's hearing. 'Although the judge didn't rule in our favor, we will still fight back to get Orlando to testify as we know he is intrinsically involved,' Chart, 40, insisted. Orlando, 48, who split from Katy earlier this year, was dragged into the case last fall after being served a subpoena and was named in the joint witness list, which was filed on July 28. Katy's legal team has been fighting for her ex-fiancé to not have to take the stand, even though Carl's team has argued that the A-listers are both 'key eyewitnesses with personal knowledge as to the scope of work, construction plans, and construction costs.' The judge, according to a Daily Mail reporter who attended the hearing, said that he only needed the testimony of the contractors themselves and added: 'Why do we need Mr. Bloom to (give testimony), other than making this a celebrity circus?' Katy, for her part, was ordered to appear in person at the six-day non-jury trial, which is set to begin on August 21 in Los Angeles, and the judge stated that he will limit the time of her testimony and cross examination to 'no more than two hours.' It is unclear on which date the 40-year-old popstar will make an appearance, given she's in the midst of her Lifetimes Tour. However, the Daily Mail confirmed that she will testify. 'Katy having to appear in court is a win for us since we can face her in the eyes and she can see the monstrous effect she's had on our family,' Chart said. 'She can't use celebrity privilege in this case and will have to show up like any normal person. We are prepared to face her at trial.' In 2020, after purchasing the house two months earlier, Carl had agreed to sell his 9,000 sq. ft. home sitting on a 2.5-acre lot to Katy for $15 million, but days later tried to nix the deal claiming he was under the influence of painkillers when he signed. A court ruled in Katy's favor in 2023, finding that the contract was legitimate, and the Dark Horse singer was declared the legal owner of the gated 1930s eight-bedroom estate which also boasts a tennis court, two guesthouses and a pool. The judge said Carl presented no credible or persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract between June 10 and June 18, 2020, the days during which he negotiated and signed the contract. The judge also said the court found significant evidence that demonstrated Carl was well enough to knowingly sign on the dotted line stating the entrepreneur to be 'coherent, engaged, lucid, and rational.' Chart told the Daily Mail: 'Although the judge didn't rule in our favor, we will still fight back to get Orlando to testify as we know he is intrinsically involved' The house, which the popstar took possession of in May 2024, was purchased under the LLC, DDoveB (named after Daisy Dove Bloom), which was registered by Orlando along with business managers Richard Feldstein and Mabel Tash. It's now being rented out by fellow A-listers Chris Pratt and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger as they build their new home. The ongoing court battle is over Katy wanting to knock $6 million off the price for alleged damages to the home - she has only paid $9 million of the $15 million price in escrow - citing structural defects, deferred maintenance, and lost rental income. She has claimed that she is entitled to $3.25 million in damages for 'loss of use' for the time that Carl would not turn over possession of the home, under the contract, and also wants $2.29 million in new alleged repair damages (bringing the total to $5.4 million - close to the $6 million she owes). The Westcott family has denied the damages to the Daily Mail and called the claims 'spurious and egregious' - while a source close to Katy argued that the 'recovery of costs is perfectly normal in civil litigation.' Chart, a Dallas-based private investor, previously called the lawsuit 'shocking' since he believed the songstress could just 'let the old man go on his way.' 'It's entitled celebrity behavior,' he told The U.S. Sun in February. 'She has no sense of fair play, no empathy, zero empathy, quite the opposite.' According to a July court document filed by Carl's attorney, he argued that 'Perry's counsel flatly refused in a series of approximately half a dozen meet and confer emails to even disclose if repairs had been done and also flatly refused to stipulate to any reinspection of the house or to the deposition of anyone in Perry's control, including Perry, her boyfriend Bloom who at inspections had stated he would be in charge of repairs, [Bernie] Gudvi (Perry's business manager), or the two contractors who at their depositions testified they were general contractors, but produced zero contracts for the work covered by their summary estimates.' So far, 16 contractors who allegedly worked on repairs were all served with deposition subpoenas that contained extensive Requests for Production of Documents, and are listed on the witness list. Katy will be examined on 'all aspects of her damages claims for loss of use and repairs,' and questioned about her claim of needing to rent another house, and 'her rental of the house to Chris Pratt or anyone else,' according to the joint trial witness list (which can be modified prior to the trial starting). As the parties continue to battle it out, Carl remains bedridden and continues to receive hospice care for Huntington's disease. Chart, whose brother Court is married to Real Housewives of Dallas alum Kameron Westcott, told the Daily Mail that he's 'still very ill' and 'he's just wasting away.' 'For this to be the last thing, the last sort of business transaction that he's even aware of is horrible and sad,' he said.

L.A.'s most charming suburb is welcoming a new music venue
L.A. is already full of great places to see concerts, but a new music venue opening is always great news. And one in arguably the most charming suburb of Los Angeles—we're talking about South Pasadena—is even more exciting. And the best part: One of the city's coolest concert bookers and promoters is behind the new space—the 'fiercely independent' Sid the Cat —which promises a lineup of nightly concerts by both local and national acts. The San Gabriel Valley isn't rich in options when it comes to live music, so Sid the Cat Auditorium will be filling a need for music fans of all ages when it opens this fall. The idyllic small city of South Pasadena is perhaps best known for its old-school Fair Oaks Pharmacy —which has sat on the corner of Mission Street and Fair Oaks Avenue since 1915—and the retro soda fountain is joined by a picturesque row of boutiques and eateries on Mission Street. And soon, right around the corner from the main drag, you'll find Sid the Cat Auditorium, situated across the street from the South Pasadena Public Library (and boasting ample parking). The new club will bring life back to the former South Pasadena Elementary School, which was originally built in 1885, rebuilt in 1928 and decommissioned as a school in 1979—and now it'll school Angelenos on up-and-coming bands to know. The shows will take place in the original auditorium in the school's east wing, which has been upgraded with a state-of-the-art sound system and can fit an audience of up to 500. Thirsty patrons can cross a covered arcade and patio to find Sid's Bar, a full bar set up in one of the school's original classrooms. Sid the Cat Auditorium won't be the only occupant in the old school though. It'll be in good company with an upcoming outpost of coffee roastery the Boy and the Bear, 'craft pubhouse' District Brewing Co. and—most exciting of all—the fourth location of Michelin-recognized and foodie-favorite Villa's Tacos. Oozing with indie cred, Sid the Cat has been behind countless concerts since 2015, championing songwriters and hosting acts including Bright Eyes, boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief, Jackson Browne, Jim James, Mac DeMarco, Moses Sumney and Ty Segall. Till now, it's been holding its shows in dozens of different venues, from Permanent Records Roadhouse and the Highland Park Ebell Club to out-of-town spots like the Ojai Valley Woman's Club and Pioneertown's Pappy & Harriet's. Earlier this year, Sid the Cat produced an Eaton Fire relief benefit for musicians affected by the fire, boasting a talent roster that read like a who's who of indie rock. More recently, it fittingly curated a lineup of free live music at the Eclectic Music Festival & Arts Crawl —South Pasadena's annual street fair. And now, the promoter will finally have a home of its own. 'We always knew that we would need our own space in order to produce the highest quality events for concert-goers, and having a home base will give us that,' said Sid the Cat co-owner and talent booker Kyle Wilkerson. 'Our vision is to celebrate music and art the way that sports are revered and celebrated.' Speaking as a music lover and L.A. concertgoer, Sid the Cat is a local treasure—a breath of fresh air in the age of corporate promoters and algorithmic curation. The founders add a personal, tangible touch to the live music scene, even crafting custom matchbooks and artist trading cards to enhance the experience at its intimate concerts.
