KUCHING (April 30): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) hopes to maintain the record of one million visitors at this year's Kuching Festival.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng noted that the festival continues to attract visitors from all walks of life, both local and international.
'Known for its wide variety of activities and attractions, the festival has grown into one of the most eagerly awaited events in our calendar.
'It is not just a celebration — it is a showcase of what makes Kuching truly special: our creative gastronomy, rich culture, sporting energy, youthful vibrancy, and meaningful 'white hair' activities that honour and engage our senior citizens,' he said at the press conference at MBKS Building today.
Wee, who is also the event's organising chairman, shared that the committee has lined up an exciting series of events and programmes that promise to be bigger, more colourful, and more inclusive than ever before.
Signature events at Kuching Festival include a garden show, Kuching Got Talent, Mayor's Walk, Kuching Zumba Fiesta, folk dance, martial arts display, traditional oriental music, International Friendship Cities Night, fishing competition and Kuching Half Marathon.
'This wide range of programmes reflects our vision to make Kuching Festival not just an event, but an inclusive, creative, and people-centred celebration that brings together food, culture, sports, and community wellness — with something for everyone,' Wee said.
The highlight of the festival is the Kuching Festival Fair, which will run from July 25 to Aug 17 at MBKS Community Hall.
'Under this fair, we will have three main attractions: the food fair, trade fair, and nightly entertainment,' Wee added.
For those interested in participating in the food Fair, applications are now open. The stall prices are as follows: half stall at RM650, single stall at RM1,300, international/premium stall at RM3,600 and double stall at RM5,400 (by tender, minimum reserve price).

Meniti Cakerawala 2.0 finale on Kuching Fest stage tomorrow

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Threads WhatsApp Telegram KUCHING (Aug 16): The curtain will fall on the Kuching Festival 2025 this Sunday with a performance described as 'truly extraordinary' – Meniti Cakerawala 2.0, a fusion of science, storytelling, and the performing arts. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced today that the festival's finale will take place at 7.45pm on August 17 at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Theatre, Kuching Park. The admission is free, but seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis. 'This is not just a performance – it is an experience. 'It is science meeting art, fact meeting beauty, and knowledge meeting emotion,' Wee said at a press conference at MBKS headquarters today, urging the public to arrive early to enjoy the festival grounds one last time before the show. He shared that the production features two of Malaysia's most celebrated figures – the nation's first astrophysicist, Tan Sri Mazlan Othman, and internationally renowned dance legend Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Ramli's choreography, performed by dancers from the Sutra Foundation, will transform the stage into a living constellation, each movement reflecting the elegance and mystery of the universe. Mazlan's narration will guide audiences through a cosmic journey – weaving astronomy, space exploration, music, poetry, and dance into a story that connects humanity to the stars. Part of the Malaysia Tour 2025, the show has been staged in cities including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu. Its international prestige is underscored by the fact that an eight-minute excerpt was featured at New York's Lincoln Centre during the 35th New York Dance Festival. 'For Malaysia to be represented on such a stage is a point of pride, and for Kuching to host the full performance is truly special,' he said. He also noted that the Kuching staging is made possible through a special collaboration with Delphic Malaysia, a partnership formed specifically for the Kuching Festival edition of the show. Wee reflected on the success of this year's Kuching Festival, which began on July 25, attracting thousands with its food stalls, cultural performances, and family activities. 'I see this as more than just entertainment. 'This performance speaks to the values we hold dear – curiosity, creativity, and connection. 'It is about seeing the bigger picture of our shared humanity, just as we see ourselves as part of a greater universe. 'I hope this finale will not only close our festival with beauty and inspiration but will also spark a new appreciation for the power of art and science to unite us,' he said. Also present at the press conference were Deputy Mayor and Kuching Festival Main Organising Committee Chairman, Dato Dr Zaiedi Suhaili, Deputy Chairman Cr Chai Ju Loon and Delphi Malaysia president Victoria Fong.

Communication camp in Sematan sets out to equip youths with leadership skills

The facilitators and KTMC members gather for a group photo, taken after the meeting. KUCHING (Aug 12): The 13th Youth Communication Camp (YCC) will be held at Kem Putra Sentosa, Sematan this Aug 30 to Sept 1, bringing together secondary school students from across southern Sarawak for an intensive programme focused on public speaking, team-building, and leadership development. Organised by the Kuching Toastmasters Club (KTMC), the camp is now open for registration at a subsidised fee of RM120 per student – a fraction of the actual cost of over RM700 per participant. KTMC president Wee Pei Chai said the reduced fee was made possible through financial grants from Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, also a YCC patron, alongside sponsorships from various government agencies and corporate bodies. Wee, who recently led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on Abdul Karim at the ministry's office, said the minister commended YCC for uniting youths from diverse backgrounds in the true Sarawakian spirit of harmony and cooperation. During the visit, he said Abdul Karim lauded YCC for engaging young adults from various backgrounds and having them work together in unity, 'in a true Sarawakian spirit'. 'Since its inception, YCC has impacted the lives of almost 2,200 campers from over 40 schools in Kuching, Samarahan, Bau, Mukah, Lundu, Sematan and Serian. 'It is the only camp in East Malaysia that focuses primarily on public speaking for secondary school students, inspired by the Toastmasters International movement,' said Wee in a statement yesterday. The camp's motto 'Get A Life, Live The Dream' reflects its mission of empowering young people with essential life skills. A highlight of the camp is the 'Lend Me Your Ears' speech competition, where 10 selected speakers will undergo comprehensive training from experienced facilitators before competing. Around 70 facilitators, comprising KTMC members and Toastmasters from across the region, will be involved in running the programme.
