East-West Highway upgrades prioritised in 2026 Budget, says Works Ministry
Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed funding requests for upgrades, stressing urgent safety needs.
'It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB,' he said after opening the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, inaugurated the bridge, attended by state leaders and Public Works officials.
To enhance safety, 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed at high-risk zones along the highway.
'These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments,' Nanta clarified.
Damaged guardrails, signboards, and road markings are also being repaired as part of ongoing improvements.
The ministry launched the MYJalan app to let the public report road issues directly.
'Perak is the first state to trial MYJalan, showing our commitment to public feedback,' Nanta added.
He highlighted the JRTB's historical and economic significance as a key interstate route.
Data from the app has already aided federal funding approvals for repairs in Perak.

Speaking during Sinar Daily's Top News Podcast titled 'Billions Spent but Are Our Roads Any Safer?', Nanta drew comparisons between the political cultures of the two East Malaysian states, noting that in Sabah, there were many leaders on the same level where everybody deserves to become the chief minister. "In Sabah, there are so many leaders on the same level. Everybody deserves to become the chief minister.... While in Sarawak, it doesn't mean nobody else deserves, but people understand the hierarchy. In Sabah, it goes like a Chinese saying where maybe there are too many tigers in one hill," he said. He, who is also Works Minister, drew a contrast between Sabah's competitive political climate and Sarawak's stability under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, whom he described as an inclusive leader with a clear development mission. 'People know their place and their responsibility. Under Abang Johari's leadership, we know what we're supporting, and it's always for the good of Sarawak,' he added. Nanta, who rarely comments on Sabah's political affairs, admitted that his visits to the state are infrequent and typically focused on his ministerial duties. 'I seldom go to Sabah, and when I do, it's to construction sites. I have many friends there, but very little opportunity to talk politics, so what I know is basically what's in the media," he noted. "The slogan 'Sarawak First' reflects a clear mission to uplift the people's living standards through economic development," he said. He stressed that the 'Sarawak First' motto should not be misconstrued as turning away from the rest of the country. Instead, it reflects a focused commitment to advancing Sarawak's socio-economic position through targeted development policies, infrastructure investment and economic growth initiatives. 80 per cent road accidents caused by careless drivers, not poor road conditions

Citing data from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), Nanta said Malaysia recorded about 500,000 road accidents each year, with around 12,000 cases involving serious injuries or fatalities. Of the roughly 6,000 annual road deaths, around 4,000 involved motorcyclists, he added. 'These figures are high and people often ask if it's because of the road conditions. The fact is, Miros studies show slightly more than 80 per cent of accidents are due to the carelessness of drivers themselves. "Only 13 per cent are linked to road conditions or weather, such as slippery roads from heavy rain," he said during Sinar Daily's podcast entitled 'Billions Spent but Are Our Roads Any Safer?'. He stressed that many accidents could have been avoided if road users adhered to traffic laws, especially speed limits that were set scientifically to suit road conditions. 'If the maximum speed limit is 60 km/h, it's there for a reason. Exceeding it might still be safe to a point, but your control over the vehicle decreases, especially on roads with turns or downhill stretches,' he explained. Nanta also warned against the growing trend of drivers using mobile phones while driving, calling it extremely irresponsible. "You might think replying to a WhatsApp message is harmless, but if you hit someone and they die, you'll carry that guilt for life. 2026 Budget: East-West Highway upgrades a priority for Works Ministry
KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway (JRTB), particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under the upcoming 2026 Budget, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the ministry has submitted a request for funding to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. Earlier, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He said the JRTB's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history.
