Vaughan urges inconsistent Zak Crawley to learn from Shubman Gill

Mint5 hours ago
Birmingham, Jul 7 (PTI) Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has lambasted opener Zak Crawley for his inconsistent performances in the ongoing Test series against India, calling him the "luckiest player" to have won so many Test caps despite repeated failures at the highest level.
The 2005 Ashes winning skipper also suggested that Crawley take a leaf out of Indian skipper Shubman Gill's batting play-book and do some course correction. Crawley's only knock of relevance in the ongoing series has been a 65-run effort in the opening Test.
"There have been many players who have frustrated fans – including me – over the years, but he (Crawley) is right up there as the most frustrating I can remember. And in my time watching, playing for and covering England, he is the player luckiest to have won as many caps as he has," Vaughan wrote in his column for 'The Telegraph'.
"He has to count himself fortunate to have played 56 games, whilst scoring just five hundreds, and averaging 31. Among all the openers in history with more than 2,500 runs, he has the lowest average: 30.3.
"He's batted 102 times in Test cricket, and been out in single digits 42 times," the cricketer-turned-commentator didn't mince words while highlighting every statistical detail of the right-handed opener's career.
He then cited Gill's example and how he made technical adjustments to have nearly scored 600 runs in the first two Tests of the ongoing series.
"It is possible to change. Look at Shubman Gill. He came into this series averaging 35, and four innings later he averages 42. He has done that because of his mindset and strategy. He recognised that he was vulnerable to the lbw, and that his hands were away from his body.
"But he has been tighter, and that has allowed him to bat for long periods with greater control, while still putting the bad ball away. He has focused on defence, then attacked later," he further wrote.

Gill's masterclass in Edgbaston breaks flurry of records, leapfrogs Sachin and Kohli

New Delhi: Shubman Gill's batting masterclass in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy made the India skipper break a flurry of records, overtaking the greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. India beat England by 336 runs to get their first-ever Test match win at Edgbaston, a venue where they had not won a Test before. This win in Birmingham was also India's biggest away Test win in terms of runs and also Gill's maiden as a Test captain. He was super with a bat, hitting 269 and 161 for a total record of 430 runs, the second most runs in a single Test, just 26 behind Graham Gooch (456), which he, coincidentally, hit against India in 1990. His 269 in the first innings at Edgbaston was the highest individual Test score for an Indian batter in England. He also achieved the feat of the highest score by an India captain in Tests, surpassing Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019. He also became the second batter to make two 150-plus scores in a Test, after Allan Border, who scored 150* and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980. Gill's 269 is also the highest by an Indian batter in Tests outside Asia, leapfrogging Tendulkar's 241 not out at the SCG in 2004 - which was the previous highest. This was also just the second Test double century by an India skipper away from home, with Kohli having achieved the feat against the West Indies in 2016. In the process, he also broke Tendulkar's 21-year-old record of having the highest score by an Indian batter in overseas (barring other Asian countries) conditions. Gill has been in phenomenal form in the first two matches of the series. He has accumulated 585 runs at an average of 146.25 in just four innings so far and is the leading run-getter in the series. With 585 runs, he recorded the highest tally in the first two Tests as captain, bettering Kohli, who scored 449 runs. Moreover, it is the second-highest aggregate in the first two matches of a series, behind Graeme Smith's 621 in England in 2003. He also achieved the feat of scoring the most runs in a captaincy debut series. He is the first Indian and only the fifth batter to be part of four century stands in a Test. The others are: Hanif Mohammad (vs West Indies in 1958), Graham Gooch (vs India in 1990), Mark Taylor (vs Pakistan in 1998) and Joe Root (vs Pakistan in 2016). Gill stitched a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket and then made a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. The Indian captain was also involved in two three-figure stands with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings. Gill is also the second Indian with hundreds in both innings of a Test in England, after Rishabh Pant, who achieved the feat in the series opener at Headingley. The 25-year-old became the third Indian captain with hundreds in both innings of a Test after Gavaskar and Kohli. Gavaskar scored 107 and 182 not out against West Indies at Eden Gardens in 1978 and Kohli scored 115 and 141 against Australia in Adelaide in 2014.

" Kaat Dein?" MS Dhoni Seeks Permission Before Cutting Cake On 44th Birthday. Video Viral

Legendary India captain MS Dhoni turned 44 on Monday, and celebrated the occasion with his friends in Ranchi. In a viral video, Dhoni is seen seeking permission before cutting a cake on his 44th birthday. "Kaat dein? (Can I cut it now?)," Dhoni can be seen asking the guy who was capturing the moment. After putting the knife on the cake, Dhoni made sure that everyone got a piece of it and also took small bites of it when others approached him to feed the cake. MS Dhoni celebrating his 44th Birthday — (@WorshipDhoni) July 7, 2025 Dhoni remains an active cricketer exclusively in the Indian Premier League, havind retired from internationals in August 2020. Rated highly for his calmness under pressure which would make most crumble helplessly, and his tactical excellence, Dhoni, since his international debut in 2004 till now, during these last few years of his career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made a name for himself as one of India's most beloved sons, who has given back to his country and city of Ranchi, everything it could have asked him for. With 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and 538 matches across formats for India, Dhoni is not only amongst the world's greatest players but also a revolutionary. Besides Australia's Adam Gilchrist, he was among the first wicketkeeper-batters who showed the world that keepers could bat really well. At a time when the bare minimum of catching and stumping was required out of a wicketkeeper, Dhoni pushed the envelope further, contributing runs with the consistency and hunger of a top-order batting giant. He formed a formidable middle-order with Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina. Dhoni's strongest format is the ODIs. In 350 ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. He scored 10 centuries and 73 fifties for India, with the best score of 183*. He is India's sixth-highest scorer in ODIs (with Sachin Tendulkar at the top with 18,426 runs). The fact that he managed to score 10,000-plus runs at an average of over 50 while coming down the order makes his statistics even more astonishing. He led India in 200 ODI matches, winning 110, losing 74. Five games were tied, while 11 failed to produce a result. He has a winning percentage of 55. Dhoni has won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 for India as a skipper. Coming to his long-format career, Dhoni played 90 matches, scoring 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09. He scored six centuries and 33 half-centuries, with the best score of 224. He is the 14th-highest scorer for India in Tests. As a captain, he led India in 60 Test matches, out of which they won 27 matches, lost 18 and drew 15. With a win percentage of 45.00, he is one of India's most successful skippers across all eras. He led Team India to the number one ranking in the ICC Test Rankings. He is also the only Indian skipper to whitewash Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, doing so in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 series.
