Talk on caste and religion-based exclusions in educational content and institutions
The Telangana Education Commission's seminar on education for students from Backward Classes (BCs), held in the city on Friday, laid emphasis on the need for a unified school management, and raised concerns about caste and religion-based exclusions in educational content and institutions.
The seminar addressed some systemic issues and concerns about social equity in BC institutions.
According to convenor of the working group on BC Education, Murali Manohar, the crisis can be traced to caste-based discrimination and the lack of constitutional recognition of BCs as a category.
He cited the absence of disaggregated data and called for release of the recent caste census data to address the gaps. Mr. Manohar also pointed at the long-standing educational deprivation faced by Shudras and Ati-shudras, contrary to the constitutional promise of equality.
Commission member P.L. Vishweshwar Rao reiterated the TECs recommendations of setting up of composite schools (nursery to grade 12) in every mandal, and the community demand for English medium instruction. He noted that 15 working groups are actively studying thematic concerns from curriculum to employability.
Mr. Rao also highlighted the contradictory state of Telangana's education, where govt. expenditure on each student remains the highest in the country but when it comes to learning outcomes, it is at the bottom. Alarming trends are also the declining enrolment in government schools, with over 2,000 schools with no students, and over 80% of junior colleges being privately managed.
Speaker Sudharshan Rao presented data on school landscape in Telangana. Noting the 'gaps' in digital infrastructure, he said that school dropouts among BC students, especially girls, are high.

Bhatti vows caste-based budget allocations
Hyderabad: Riding high on the momentum of social justice following the recent induction of three new ministers, deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday said the Congress govt would aim to allocate funds proportionate to the population of each caste and community in the 2025–26 state budget. Speaking at a public meeting in Khammam during the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Gouda Sangham Bhavan, Bhatti said the next budget would reflect the govt's commitment to social equity by enhancing access to education, employment, and welfare for all communities. "The Congress govt is committed to building an egalitarian society where every section is given equal opportunity. As promised in our manifesto, we conducted a caste census which revealed that BCs constitute 56% of the population," he said. He added that the govt passed 42% reservation bills for BCs in local bodies and govt jobs and had forwarded the proposal to the Centre. "This is a major achievement of the Indiramma govt," he noted. Bhatti also credited Telangana's inclusive policies for inspiring the national discourse. "When Rahul Gandhi began advocating the Telangana model, many laughed. But today, it has become a model for the entire country — this is a victory of Telangana's people," he said. He assured the Goud community that the new building would be completed within a year, alongside a coaching centre for unemployed youth and a statue of Sardar Sarvai Papanna. Earlier in the day, the deputy CM flagged off 45 battery-operated buses at the Suryapet bus stand. He announced that 79 such buses were sanctioned for the depot and that 2,800 more would soon be launched within Hyderabad's Outer Ring Road. Since the launch of the women's free travel scheme, RTC has issued 182 crore zero-fare tickets, with the govt reimbursing ₹6,088 crore, he added.

Paraguay president's X account likely hacked in Bitcoin scheme
Paraguay's government on Monday said that President Santiago Pena's X account had likely been hacked after the leader appeared to promote trading of cryptocurrency Bitcoin. 'The president's official X account has presented irregular activity which suggests possible unauthorized entry,' the government said in a statement. A post on Pena's account in English, with a Spanish-language statement purporting to be from the government, had declared that the Latin American country had made Bitcoin legal tender and that it would roll out a $5 million Bitcoin-backed reserve fund. The government asked citizens to ignore posts from the account until official confirmation was made available. Paraguay's national cybersecurity team was working with X to investigate the situation, the government added. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"You lose and say all this...not good to dismiss mandate of people": Nitin Gadkari on Rahul Gandhi's allegations on Maharashtra polls
New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed Rahul Gandhi over his allegations concerning Maharashtra assembly polls, saying that the Congress leader is making such remarks after losing the polls and it is not good 'to dismiss a mandate'. 'It is not good to dismiss a mandate given by the people. You lose and now say all this,' Gadkari told ANI in an interview. Rahul Gandhi had alleged 'rigging' in Maharashtra assembly polls and called upon the Election Commission to publish consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter rolls for the most recent elections to the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas of all states, including Maharashtra, saying that 'telling the truth' will protect poll panel's credibility. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, referred to the ECI's response to his allegations concerning Maharashtra polls and said 'releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions'. Rahul Gandhi had written an article in an English daily on the issue. Election Commission sources had said that the poll panel wrote a detailed letter to Congress in December last year rejecting its 'misleading' claims about voter turnout data in Maharashtra polls and, instead of writing to the poll panel directly, Rahul Gandhi keeps speaking and writing to media seeking answers to his 'same unfounded doubts again and again'. They said it is not clear as to why Rahul Gandhi is shying away from writing to EC in person himself and get a reply. ECI sources had said that the poll panel had extended an invitation to the Indian National Congress (INC) for interaction, which was scheduled for May 15. However, the meeting was later cancelled at the request of INC itself. Gadkari also countered Gandhi's 'Narender-Surrender' jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi had claimed that cessation of hostilities with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor had been done with mediation of US President Donald Trump. 'The citizens of the country know our government is very sensitive to the matter, how it works, how we respond and how we protect our people. We have almost ended Naxal activities in the country. (Improved) law and order is an achievement of our government,' the Union Minister said. Asked about the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people died during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, Gadkari said Karnataka government should look into the lapses.
