WATCH: Sunil Gavaskar presents Shubman Gill with signed cap & shirt in heartwarming gesture after stellar batting display

Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar's love for the game is no secret. Whether it's his passionate dance when Rohit Sharma-led India won the 2024 ICC Champions Trophy or his stern remarks like the 'Stupid, stupid, stupid' comment after Rishabh Pant threw his wicket away during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, the batting great has been omnipresent in all the highs and lows of Indian cricket.
He has repeatedly made young cricketers' days special with his heartwarming gestures. One such wholesome moment occurred on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England at The Oval in London, where Gavaskar gifted a cap and a shirt to current India Test captain Shubman Gill for his tremendous performance with the bat in the series. Gill was in sublime form in his debut series as captain, narrowly missing Gavaskar's record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series by just 20 runs. His batting heroics, including a double century in the first innings and a ton in the second at Edgbaston, led India to a famous victory.

Gill finished the series with 754 runs in 10 innings across five Tests, including four centuries and a highest score of 269. Gavaskar still holds the record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series, which is 774 runs in eight innings against the West Indies during the 1970-71 tour.
On Saturday, Gavaskar approached Gill after the day's play and said, 'Well done! I've got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (the record of most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series)… but at least you have something to aim for in the next series, yeah? This is just a little gift… a shirt with my 'SG' initials. Someone made it for me, but I'm giving it to you. I don't know if it will fit you or not.'
He added, 'This is a little cap, which I give to very few people, with my signature. All the best, God bless—and that last move was fantastic, setting a fielder there and bowling a yorker.'
India trail the five-match Test series 2-1, and with the series on the line, they need eight more wickets to win the last Test and level the series. The home team, meanwhile, need 324 more runs to make it a commanding 3-1 win.

Bad news for Jasprit Bumrah, head coach Gautam Gambhir forces BCCI to take BIG decision due to…

Gautam Gambhir and BCCI are not happy with players 'picking and choosing' matches. (Photo: IANS) Team India managed to heroically level the five-match Test series against England at the Oval in London on Monday. Shubman Gill's side posted their narrowest win in Test cricket in their history by six runs as the 'Tendulkar Anderson Trophy' was shared after a 2-2 draw. However, one of the major concerns for the Indian side was the 'unavailability' of their premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah for all five of the Test matches. Bumrah missed the 2nd and 5th Test of the series after deciding to play in only three out of the five games in the series. The Mumbai Indians pacer ended up as Team India's second-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 3 Tests behind Mohammed Siraj, who claimed 23 wickets after playing in all five Tests. But according to reports, head coach Gautam Gambhir is keen on putting an end to this practice of 'picking and choosing' matches. What is the BCCI decision after discussion with Gautam Gambhir? According to a report in PTI news agency, BCCI have decided that all centrally-contracted Indian players will not to allowed to 'pick and chose' their matches going forward. 'There have been discussions and the message will be sent across to the centrally contracted players, especially those who are all format regulars that this culture of picking and choosing games won't be entertained in near future,' a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. 'It doesn't mean that workload management will be thrown out of the window but a more objective approach is expected in near future. Obviously, fast bowlers' workload needs to be managed but it can't be accepted that in the name of workload management, people will miss crucial matches,' the official added. Siraj, who sent down 185.3 overs across five Tests or over 1000 deliveries throughout the Test series. In spite of that, Siraj's final ball of the game – which clean-bowled Gus Atkinson to win the Oval Test – was clocked at 143kph, his fifth fastest ball of the entire series. In contrary to this, Bumrah's pace kept on decreasing in all the three Tests he played. In fact, in the fourth Test at Manchester, Bumrah only bowled 3 per cent of his deliveries which were above 140kph. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar also slammed the over-usage of 'workload management' excuse. 'When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket for India is an honour,' Gavaskar told 'India Today'. 'You are representing 140 crore people and that is what we saw in Mohammed Siraj. I think Siraj bowled his heart out, and he debunked forever this business of workload. For five Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him,' he added. Will Jasprit Bumrah be available for Asia Cup 2025? The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to start on September 9 in UAE and Bumrah would have got a break of more than month before the T20 games for Team India begin. But the BCCI official said that if Bumrah did play in the Asia Cup and Team India ended up reaching the final on September 28, it is unlikely that the speedster will be available to play in the first Test vs West Indies from October 2. 'Look if Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and if India go the distance till September 28, he won't obviously play the West Indies Test series starting October 2. However, if there are no injuries, he will certainly play the two Tests against World champions South Africa in November,' the BCCI official told PTI.

No Junk Food, Outside Biryani: How Mohammed Siraj Prepared Himself For Long Spells In England

Nearly 180 overs over the course of a 5-match series, Mohammed Siraj truly asserted that 'workload management' is a state of mind. The pacer bowled his heart out, emering as the team's top wicket-taker in England despite being given back-to-back assignments without break. As someone like Jasprit Bumrah struggles to maintain top fitness, Siraj has been able to deliver what no Indian pacer has in recent years. Siraj's brother, Mohammed Ismail, has revealed the fitness and diet regime that the pacer followed for the excruciating workload that he was given in England. "Yes, absolutely. He focuses a lot on fitness. He avoids junk food and maintains a disciplined diet. Even living in Hyderabad, he rarely eats biryani - maybe occasionally, and only if it's homemade. But no pizzas or fast food - he's very disciplined about his body," Mohammed Ismail was quoted as saying by India Today. Many fast bowlers break down when it comes to bowling such long spells in Test cricket but Siraj has been able to push his ceiling time and again, leaving some of the experts of the game astonished. Ismail revealed that, along with diet, the pacer also has a strict gym regime that he doesn't compromise with. "100%, he never gives up, even when he wasn't selected for the Champions Trophy squad, he didn't let it demotivate him. Instead, he worked even harder. He hit the gym, focused on his fitness, and practiced hard every day - morning and evening. He identified what was missing and fixed it," he added. Family Proud of Siraj's show against England Speaking to ANI, Ismail said on India's win at the Oval Test, "We are feeling very proud. I want to congratulate him and all his teammates for making history. I just had a conversation with him, and he was very happy. I congratulated him, and I cannot wait for him to come back to India." Also, Siraj's friend, Irfan, told ANI, "It is a matter of great happiness to us that Siraj did so well. On this auspicious occasion, we are celebrating in Hyderabad. We have also got firecrackers for the celebration. I have not talked to him yet." Siraj kickstarted the match with a 4/86 in the first innings, bowling well in tandem with Prasidh Krishna to restrict England to 247 runs and allowing for a slight 23-run lead. Later, while defending 374, when England was on song at 301/4, he and Krishna once again bowled their hearts out, enabling India to bundle out England for 367 runs. Siraj took a five-wicket haul (5/104), ending with match figures of 9/190, which earned him the 'Player of the Match' award.
