Most Online Financial Scam Transactions Made With Victims' Own Consent
BNM Kuala Lumpur Regional Office manager S. Vijayadurai said criminals are now becoming more sophisticated in manipulating their victims, including using fear-based tactics or deceiving them through love scams.
'Some victims are told they are involved in drug or hit-and-run cases, while some scammers even pose as individuals wanting to have romantic ties with the victims,' he said as a guest on Bernama Radio's 'POV: Perspektif Bukan Persepsi Bersama Kamal Affandi Hashim' programme today.
Vijayadurai added that such tactics made victims willingly carry out transactions, often unaware that they are being duped.
In addition, criminals are also found to use technology, such as spoofing, to access applications in victims' smartphones and artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic their voices.
He advised the public to adopt the 3S approach, namely question (soal) the validity of the information received; refrain (sekat) from following the instructions given; and share (sebar) correct information with family and friends.
He said BNM is collaborating with various agencies, including the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), Royal Malaysia Police, (PDRM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the banking industry and the telecommunication industry, through the establishment of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) to coordinate responses towards fraud cases.
Fraud victims, he added, must promptly report to the NSRC by calling 997, in addition to lodging a police report to facilitate further action.
'Usually, the money taken by scammers will be received through a mule account, which is used by a third party and then used for illegal purposes.

Education Ministry to work with stakeholders to clarify guidelines on handling bullying
KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will conduct engagement sessions with all stakeholders to explain the current guidelines for handling bullying offences, says Minister Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ). She said the move was in response to one of the four demands in the #JusticeForZara memorandum submitted to the ministry by a group of student activists here on Tuesday (Aug 12). "The ministry is also open to views and suggestions to improve the existing guidelines," she said in a Facebook post. On the demand for a comprehensive reform of the national education system, particularly in relation to bullying issues, Fadhlina said the ministry had announced several important measures to enhance safety in all educational institutions under its purview. "This includes conducting safety audits, improving the bullying complaint system, setting up a safety reform committee, taking stern action such as suspending and expelling students involved in bullying, and ensuring psychosocial support aspects are strengthened at every level," she said. On the demand to make mandatory and periodic training for all teachers, administrators and wardens on crisis intervention, student emotional management and professional procedures in handling bullying complaints, Fadhlina said training aspects would continue to be enhanced to ensure the readiness of school administrators, teachers and wardens. She also said that all educational institutions under the ministry's purview must comply with the guidelines for tackling bullying offences. Regarding the demand for the Education Ministry to provide an open explanation to the public about the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, she said the ministry would fully cooperate with the police investigation, and updates on the case would be communicated periodically by the police. "The Education Ministry welcomes the police's initiative to set up a special task force to handle the case involving the late Zara Qairina," said Fadhlina, who met with the representatives of the student activists in Parliament to further discuss all concerns raised in the memorandum. - Bernama

Police deny beating suspects in Palestinian kidnapping case
KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer rejected claims that suspects in a Palestinian man's kidnapping case were beaten and forced to confess during their arrest three years ago. ASP Mohamad Jazlan Sharif denied allegations that two suspects suffered severe injuries, including a torn tongue, while in custody. The 42-year-old officer testified under cross-examination by defence lawyer Norma Goh Kim Lian in the High Court. Eight individuals face charges related to the abduction of a 31-year-old Palestinian man in Hulu Langat. Goh asserted that the fifth and sixth accused were assaulted into confessing, which Mohamad Jazlan firmly denied. The witness confirmed that the suspects did not attempt to flee during their arrest in a chalet room. Mohamad Jazlan, the raid's lead officer, stated the arrests were made for investigative purposes following a police report. He maintained no physical assault occurred during the operation, as relayed to deputy public prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman. The trial, presided by Judge K. Muniandy, will continue on 15 October. All eight accused are charged under the Kidnapping Act 1961, which carries 30 to 40 years' imprisonment and caning if convicted. Three defendants face additional money laundering charges involving over RM250,000 under anti-terrorism financing laws. – Bernama
