Job scams a key issue under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship

The Sun30-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, has pledged to take decisive action against transnational job scam syndicates, placing the issue at the forefront of its regional agenda.
Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, in a statement on Friday said it takes the issue of job scam syndicates seriously.
The ministry expressed its sincere appreciation to the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO) as well as other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the media, for their continued efforts in drawing attention to the plight of Malaysians who have fallen victim to job scam syndicates across the region.
'Malaysia remains fully committed to working closely with ASEAN counterparts and all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen preventive measures, enhance regional collaboration, and ensure protection for all victims,' added the statement.
The Foreign Ministry said it has taken concrete steps to raise the matter with fellow ASEAN Member States, including at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Langkawi in January and the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit earlier this week.
At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat held in Langkawi in January, ministers reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing transnational crimes, including people smuggling, trafficking in persons, drug trafficking, cybercrime, money laundering, and the rising threat of online scams.
During the 29th ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) Council Meeting, held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia stressed the urgent need for decisive regional action in tackling cross-border crimes.
As a result, ASEAN ministers agreed to review the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2016-2025) to strengthen regional coordination and ensure that its successor documents address emerging and evolving criminal threats.
In the 46th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN leaders also expressed strong determination to intensify cooperation under the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with an emphasis on law enforcement collaboration to combat online scams and trafficking in persons.

Sabah Information Department urges unity through Jalur Gemilang, state flag display

KOTA KINABALU: Flying the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah state flag is a powerful expression of unity and patriotism, especially in a culturally and racially diverse nation, says state Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor. She said the practice reflects Malaysians' shared commitment to live harmoniously and work towards a common vision of prosperity and well-being. 'Sabahans live peacefully amidst racial, religious and cultural diversity,' she said. 'In these differences, we share the same spirit and vision – to live as one in prosperity and harmony. Every flag flown is a reminder of our pride in this blessed land.' Jainisah was speaking when officiating the Malaysia Day and Sabah Day Jiwa Madani Carnival, held in conjunction with the Sahabat Maritim X Borneo Food Fest Santuni Felda event in Felda Sahabat, Lahad Datu, on Friday (Aug 15). She called on all Malaysians to continue safeguarding peace and unity, and urged the public to show their support by proudly displaying the national and state flags. Jainisah, who also heads the state Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 convoy, said the series of programmes leading up to National Day, Malaysia Day and Sabah Day act as a bridge between the government and the people. 'These events bring agencies directly to the grassroots, allowing them to share information, run activities and strengthen ties with the community,' she said. Twenty-one agencies and departments are involved, including the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, Sabah Electricity, mobile library services, Territorial Army and several financial institutions. Also present were state Maritime director First Admiral (Maritime) Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali and Tungku Community Development leader Momen Anghai @ Anchai.

Jalur Gemilang: Symbol of strength and unity

LETTER | As we welcome the National Month, the Jalur Gemilang in all its glory stands for our sovereignty, serves as a source of strength and unites Malaysians. The flag reminds us of the sacrifices of our forefathers. Among other sentiments, it resonates with me the sense of unity and togetherness. This year's theme of 'Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni' emphasises social wellbeing, fairness and the welfare of Malaysians, among others. It is a timely reminder and a clarion call. However, the truth is, we do not need themes or reminders to instil or strengthen our sense of patriotism and unity. Health calamities such as the Covid-19 outbreak showed us the true meaning of kinship; we banded together as a family. We looked out for one another as siblings. Whenever anyone needed help, we helped in kind and in cash. We were one family. The Covid-19 outbreak has come and gone, and it took with it friends and family, which we may not see again. Life as we know it is back to normal, but that does not mean we lose our brotherhood. We don't need another pandemic to remind us of our responsibilities as a family. The sense of unity is strong among Malaysians. It has taken us through thick and thin. I cannot deny instances where the spirit of unity we have fought hard to sustain will be tested. We do not need to look far; just go on social media, look at the words used, provocation, and downright evil comments being thrown around. I urge everyone to reject any elements of divisiveness, practice moderation instead. We are all brothers and sisters. Let the Jalur Gemilang, along with the Rukun Negara, serve as our guide towards nation-building and unity. Let the Jalur Gemilang, waving majestically on the backdrop of a clear blue sky, serve as inspiration, hope and guidance for all of us, for this will always be our Malaysia.
