IOS Sagar arrives in Port Louis after completing 1st phase of EEZ surveillance
Under a unique initiative, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the Indian Navy's offshore patrol vessel, INS Sunayna, as Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) on April 5.
New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) Indian naval ship IOS Sagar, with 44 naval personnel from nine friendly nations, has successfully completed the first phase of a joint exclusive economic zone surveillance with Mauritius as part of its deployment in the South Western Indian Ocean.
'IOS SAGAR arrived at Port Louis Harbour in Mauritius on April 26 on completion of Phase-I of Joint EEZ (exclusive economic zone) surveillance with the National Coast Guard (of) Mauritius as part of the deployment to the South Western Indian Ocean,' the Indian Navy said on Sunday.
It said the visit marks a 'significant milestone' in India's commitment to regional maritime cooperation and capacity-building with friendly foreign countries.
INS Sunayna is designed for anti-piracy operations, maritime surveillance, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
The ship is equipped with medium and close-range gunnery weapons and modern electronic warfare suites, including missile defence measures.
She can also carry a helicopter, which enhances her operational and surveillance capability, according to the Indian Navy.
After flagging off IOS Sagar at Karwar naval base, Defence Minister Singh had described the maritime mission as a reflection of India's commitment to peace, prosperity, and collective security in the region.
'Our Navy ensures that, in the Indian Ocean Region, no nation suppresses another on the basis of overwhelming economy and military power. We ensure that the nations' interests are protected without compromising their sovereignty,' he said.
The defence minister made the remarks amid growing concerns in the region over China's increasing military muscle-flexing in the strategic waters.
'Along with other stakeholders, the Indian Navy is ensuring peace and prosperity in the region.' 'Equipped with state-of-the-art ships, weapons and equipment and well-trained and motivated sailors, we resolve to move ahead with other friendly nations towards developing IOR as a symbol of brotherhood and shared interest,' he said. Delhi HC slaps Rs 10 lakh cost on litigant for filing pleas to extort money
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has expressed shock and imposed Rs 10 lakh cost on a man for filing pleas alleging illegal constructions in the capital with the aid of his lawyer and motive to extort money. Justice Mini Pushkarna said it was dealing with cases of unauthorised constructions 'strictly with an iron hand", but had to also ensure the process of the court was not misused by anyone to extort money from the persons involved in such constructions. The court, therefore, pulled up petitioner Anil Lodhi, General Secretary of Azad Market RWA, who was found involved in cases of impersonation and extortion. The court went on to refer to the Bar Council of Delhi, the name of advocate Babu Lal Gupta, who was involved with a purported NGO named Green Gold Earth of World, to consider his conduct and assess if there were any violations of the applicable rules and regulations in relation to the matter and take requisite action. 'This court also takes note of the submission made by counsel appearing for the private respondents that Anil Lodhi, General Secretary of Azad Market RWA, has been approaching their clients for the purpose of extorting money from them. These facts are alarming and shocking, which disclose the deplorable conduct of the petitioner in filing cases for extorting money from people, by misusing and abusing the process of this court," the court said in its August 7 order. The order was directed to be tagged with all future petitions, which Lodhi or the NGO affiliated to him, could file in future. The proceeding before a court, the order said, was a 'solemn process" for furthering the cause of justice, and not for aiding unlawful objectives of certain individuals. The court noted many of Lodhi's cases were filed through the same lawyer and the address given for the NGO in which Lodhi claimed to be a trustee, was of the lawyer's chamber allotted to Gupta. The court was hearing the petitions filed by Azad Market RWA, through Lodhi, seeking directions to the authorities to take action against the illegal and unauthorised constructions in certain shops situated at Roshanara Road and Rani Jhansi Road, Jhandewalan, along with action against misuse of electricity and drinking water. The court was informed that the MCD had already initiated requisite action against them. The MCD was further directed to take action in a time bound manner in case of any illegality. The order observed the alleged illegal construction was not in the vicinity of the petitioner's neighbourhood. The petitioner was found to have filed similar pleas against illegal encroachment in the past, including through the NGO. The court referred to a report of the Registrar of Societies and said the NGO was not registered. The litigant was said to have misused the court process under the garb of social work with oblique motives and moving the court with 'unclean hands". Strange NCPCR challenging order granting protection to couple: SC
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday found it 'strange" that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) was challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court's order granting protection to a Muslim couple apprehending threat to life. While dismissing the NCPCR's plea, a bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan wondered how the commission was aggrieved by the high's 2022 order which noted the marriage of a Muslim girl was governed by the Muslim Personal Law. The high court order said the girl, who married a 21-year-old man, was aged over 16 years. 'We fail to see as to how the NCPCR can be aggrieved by such an order. If the high court in exercise of its jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution seeks to extend protection to two individuals, it is strange that the NCPCR is challenging such an order," the top court said. It said the NCPCR had no locus standi to challenge the order. The bench told the NCPCR's counsel that the commission was a 'stranger" to the litigation. 'Two people have come and they have asked for protection from the court. The court has granted protection and you are challenging that order?" the bench asked. The NCPCR's counsel said the high court order was challenged considering the question of law involved in the matter. Pointing out there was no question of law, the bench said how the NCPCR, meant for the protection of children, could challenge an order granting protection. The bench also dismissed a separate plea filed by the NCPCR against another order of the same high court. 'Take up better causes than this," the bench told the NCPCR's counsel. The top court also dismissed other plea challenging the high court's orders. In its September 2022 order, the high court directed the 16-year-old girl's custody to be handed over to the petitioner husband and noted both were Muslims. The high court referred to a verdict which said marriage of a Muslim girl continues to be governed by the personal law of Muslims. According to the verdict, 15 years was the age of puberty of a Muslim female and on her own willingness and consent, after attaining puberty, she can marry a person of her choice and such a marriage would not be void in terms of section 12 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
