Crude palm oil and fighting cocks worth RM3.9 million seized

Kuala Lumpur: The Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) Division of the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) seized various illegal items worth RM3.9 million in two integrated operations in Lahad Datu and Tawau, Sabah, on Thursday and Friday. JKDNKA Director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said in the first operation in Lahad Datu at 7pm, carried out with enforcement officers from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), they raided a store at a palm oil plantation and arrested four men aged between 20 and 31. 'We seized a lorry head with a tanker containing 30,000 litres of crude palm oil, a van, three motorised oil pumps with hoses and tanks, as well as drums filled with crude palm oil. 'The total amount of crude palm oil seized is estimated to weigh 30,148 tonnes, with a market value of RM152,090, and the overall value of the seizure in this operation is estimated at RM645,890,' he said, in a statement, Monday. Azmi said the case is being investigated under Regulation 5(1)(b) of the MPOB (Licensing) Regulations 2005, adding that police also issued five summonses (POL 257) for vehicle-related offences such as expired road tax, no insurance coverage and driving without a licence. Meanwhile, in the second operation in Tawau at 2.30pm on Friday, police seized 622 fighting cocks and arrested three men, including two foreign men from Indonesia and the Philippines, all aged around their 50s. 'At the first location in Kampung Apas Parit, two Indonesian men and two Filipino men were arrested, and police seized 470 fighting cocks believed to be from the Philippines, 40 rooster spur knives, 180 units of vitamins and 500 chicken cages. 'At the second location in Kampung Membalua Off Jalan Apas, a 57-year-old man was detained along with 152 fighting cocks, with the total estimated value of the seizures at both locations being RM3,287,708,' he said. Judge Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh ordered Bunyamin Sukiman, 42, to serve his sentence from the date of arrest on July 18, while his wife, Yorlini Abdullah Umar, 32, will face three months' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. The girl was found to be innocent, but during the investigation, she disclosed that she had been beaten, had her ear twisted by both her mother and stepfather, and punched by the man. She further revealed that they had placed her hand on the floor and slammed a durian husk on it, causing injury. The wounded hand was then soaked in warm salted water, and tied with adhesive tape and left overnight. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Ravindejit Kaur urged the court to impose a severe sentence, stressing that the victim, a minor, was entitled to protection, not violence. 'The act of pressing a durian husk onto the child's hand and subsequently soaking it in salt water is an act of extreme cruelty. Parents are meant to protect their children, not unleash their anger upon them,' she submitted. In mitigation, the couple's lawyer, Simret Singh, pleaded for a lenient sentence, stating that Yorlini was unemployed and financially dependent on Bunyamin, who works as a vehicle sales advisor and is the family's sole breadwinner. 'The couple has two children, including the victim. They were remanded for seven days and cooperated fully with the authorities. Immigration officer at KLIA entry checkpoint detained with RM8,000 in pocket

SEPANG: An enforcement officer was detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 here this morning on suspicion of misconduct known as 'Counter Setting', which is a collaboration between immigration officers and syndicates to allow entry for foreigners without valid documents. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement today that the enforcement officer was detained at about 9.20 am today by the AKPS Monitoring and Integrity Unit after closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the officer's suspicious behaviour at the entry checkpoint counter. According to the statement, the detained officer was found in possession of RM8,391 in cash, three communication devices, and several notes containing passport numbers believed to be related to the activity of arranging the entry and exit of individuals illegally. "In investigations, we noticed that the notes contained the last four digits of a passport number, which are believed to be related to the activity of arranging illegal entry and exit routes for certain individuals," the statement said. AKPS stated that the officer in question was handed over to the AKPS KLIA Integrity Unit for internal investigation before being handed over to the Selangor branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further action. "AKPS views any breach of integrity seriously, especially involving the security of the country's entry points, and will take strict action against any officer involved. Senior assistant medical officer remanded over alleged abuse of power in Labuan

LABUAN: A senior assistant medical officer in Labuan has been remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into alleged abuse of power involving a company owned by his wife. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) detained the man, believed to be in his 50s, when he came to give a statement at the MACC office around 5.40pm on Wednesday. Labuan Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad granted the remand order until 28 July 2024 following an application by MACC on Thursday. According to a source, the officer is suspected of awarding forwarding and logistics-related jobs worth about RM20,000 at his workplace in 2023 and 2024 to his wife's company.
