Customs intercepts cannabis smuggling at Malaysia-Thailand border
Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim said a team of customs personnel and officers from the Padang Besar enforcement unit inspected an empty car with Malaysian registration plates parked at the roadside near the border gate of Padang Besar in Jalan Sadao on June 19 at about 11.30pm.
"Inspection of the car found several black plastic packages underneath and inside the vehicle, along with two backpacks on the rear passenger seat," he said during a press conference at the Padang Besar Customs Enforcement Unit office on Wednesday (June 25).
Further checks on the black plastic packages and backpacks revealed 40 vacuum-sealed transparent plastic packets containing dried plant material suspected to be cannabis, with a total weight of 22.855kg worth about RM2.285mil.
Ismail said checks revealed that the car belongs to a 66-year-old woman living in Padang Besar.
"The woman is not licensed to drive, and we suspect that her 39-year-old son used her car to smuggle the cannabis," he added.
The Customs Department is investigating the case under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He urged the public to assist the Customs Department in combating smuggling crimes and advised against involvement in such activities.
The public can help by providing information on smuggling activities via the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting the nearest Customs Office in any state, ensuring that all informants' identities are kept confidential.

Akmal plans Penang trip to ‘teach' apek how to hang the Jalur Gemilang properly
UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said he would visit a Penang hardware shop on Monday after its owner, Feng Jin Zhen, was filmed holding the Malaysian flag upside down. Although Feng claimed it was unintentional while measuring a pole, Akmal dismissed the explanation, calling the men involved 'traitors' and inviting supporters to join him at the shop to 'teach' them how to hang the flag properly, using the term ah pek for the two elderly Chinese men. 'I'm coming this Monday, and I want to invite all my friends from across Malaysia to come to this ah pek's shop at 12 noon. 'We'll go to his shop on the condition that we bring the Malaysian flag so we can teach these two ah pek how to properly put up the Malaysian flag. 'So, you two ah pek, wait for me to come and teach you how to put up the Malaysian flag,' Akmal said in a Facebook post. A 20-second video of a man holding the Malaysian flag upside down went viral after being posted on Facebook, later shared by Akmal, urging government action against them. The Merlimau assemblyman sarcastically questioned if the men were PWDs, referencing a past DAP claim that a similar flag incident involved a disabled person. Police are investigating the case under multiple laws, including the Emblems and Names Act, the Minor Offences Act, and the Communications and Multimedia Act. —Aug 10, 2025 Main image: Free Malaysia Today

Foreigner caught using fake Malaysian driving licence for luxury car
KUALA LUMPUR: A foreign national was caught driving a luxury car using a suspected fake Malaysian driving licence during the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) Ops Luxury 3.0. The operation, which ended yesterday, revealed multiple offences involving nine foreigners driving high-end vehicles. JPJ Senior Enforcement Director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan confirmed the foreigner from a South Asian country was found with a counterfeit licence. He stated that further investigations will determine how the fake document was obtained. 'We do not rule out the possibility of a syndicate forging the document, and a thorough investigation from various aspects will be carried out,' he said at a press conference. All nine foreigners were issued summonses for offences including driving without insurance and expired road tax. Muhammad Kifli added that JPJ will collaborate with the Immigration Department and other agencies to probe the case. He emphasised that no leniency will be shown to traffic offenders, regardless of nationality. Ops Luxury 3.0 targeted luxury vehicles involved in traffic violations, resulting in the seizure of 104 cars, including Ferraris, Range Rovers, and Porsches. The operation, which began last Thursday, involved both local and foreign drivers. – Bernama

GOF foils smuggling of 16,000kg pork carcasses in Kelantan
KOTA BHARU: The 8th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 16,000 kilogrammes of pork carcasses into Malaysia. The interception occurred along Jalan Besar Kampung Apal on the Kelantan-Terengganu Highway during a routine inspection. Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid confirmed the lorries lacked valid documentation for the meat. Authorities suspect the pork originated from Thailand and was destined for local markets in Malaysia. Three individuals, including two drivers and a lorry attendant, were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt. All suspects are Indian nationals aged between 23 and 46 years old. The seized items, including the two lorries, have an estimated total value of RM1.04 million. The Terengganu Veterinary Department has taken custody of the confiscated goods for further investigation. The case is being probed under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953, which regulates the import and export of animal products. This operation highlights ongoing efforts by Malaysian authorities to curb illegal meat smuggling activities. – Bernama
