Indian PM Modi says he had ‘good' conversation with Putin
NEW DELHI : Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had 'a very good' conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, during which they discussed Ukraine and ways to strengthen bilateral ties.
The call took place as Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and its fifth-biggest economy, faces some difficult decisions over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil.
US President Donald Trump has given longstanding ally India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, three weeks to find alternative suppliers or new import tariffs of 25% will double to 50%.
'Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine,' Modi posted on social media.
'I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year.'
Buying Russian oil has saved India billions of dollars on import costs, keeping domestic fuel prices relatively stable, but that benefit is now at risk because of Trump's tariffs.
The oil purchases are a key source of revenue for Moscow's war in Ukraine.
Russia is also one of India's top arms suppliers and the warm ties between the two countries date back to the Soviet era.
Putin's last visit to India was in December 2021.
The Kremlin has slammed calls to 'force countries to sever trading relations' with Russia as 'illegitimate', without directly mentioning Trump.
Putin also met India's national security adviser Ajit Doval in Moscow on Thursday but no details were provided of their discussions.
'Peaceful resolution'
Ukraine's Western allies have sought to cut Russia's export earnings since Moscow launched its military assault in February 2022.
However, Russia has been able to redirect energy sales away from Europe to countries including India and China.
India has argued it imported oil 'from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict'.
The Kremlin has said that a summit on Ukraine between Trump and Putin was set for 'coming days', although an exact time or venue has not been announced.
Modi also reiterated during his call with Putin India's consistent position seeking a 'peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict', a government statement said.
The Indian leader, facing major political and economic ramifications at home and abroad after Washington's tariff blitz, has not spoken directly about Trump.
However, he said on Thursday 'India will never compromise' on the interests of its farmers.
Agriculture employs vast numbers of people in India and has been a key sticking point in trade negotiations with Washington.
India had early hopes for special tariff treatment after Trump said in February he had found a 'special bond' with Modi.
Successive US administrations have seen India as a key partner, with like-minded interests with regard to China.
India and neighbouring China have long been intense rivals competing for strategic influence across South Asia.

Foreign investors turn net buyers of US$996mil in Asian markets last week
In Malaysia, foreign investors extended their net selling streak to their fifth consecutive week, registering a net outflow of RM1.14 billion. (AP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Foreign investors turned net buyers in Asian markets last week, reversing the previous week's outflow, recording an inflow of US$996 million (RM4.22 billion), with Taiwan recording the highest purchases in the region. MBSB Investment Bank Bhd's fund flow report for the week ended Aug 8, 2025, reported that only India and the Philippines registered net foreign outflows, while all other countries saw net inflows. It said Taiwan posted the region's largest net inflow at US$2.06 billion (RM8.72 billion), more than 2.5 times last week's US$820.8 million (RM3.48 billion), marking a seventh consecutive week of foreign buying, with sentiment lifted by the second quarter of calendar year 2025 (Q2 2025) gross domestic product (GDP) growth. 'Fitch reaffirmed Taiwan's long-term sovereign rating at 'AA' with a stable outlook, citing strong fiscal discipline and robust external balances. 'However, the outlook is clouded by potential 100% tariffs on semiconductor imports, which account for around 80% of Taiwan's US-bound exports,' the report said. Meanwhile, Korea recorded a net inflow of US$344.9 million (RM1.46 billion), extending foreign investors' buying streak to five weeks, supported by moderating inflation and resilient export performance. It said Thailand attracted US$199.5 million (RM844.68 million), 3.6 times higher than the prior week's US$54.9 million (RM232.45 million), following the GDP growth forecast revised upward after the US tariff cut on Thai goods. Regarding outflows, MBSB noted that India recorded the region's largest outflow at US$1.34 billion (RM5.67 billion), extending its losing streak to four weeks, as investors weighed tariff risks and monetary policy signals. 'The Reserve Bank of India kept its policy repo (repurchase) rate unchanged at 5.5% and maintained its financial year 2026 GDP growth forecast at 6.5%, citing a more benign inflation outlook but warning of potential growth risks from prolonged 50% US tariffs,' said the report. It said the Philippines saw a marginal outflow of US$0.1 million (RM0.42 million), its second week of net selling, despite reporting Q2 2025 GDP growth of 5.5% year-on-year – the fastest pace in a year – on a sharp rebound in agriculture and steady household spending. 'The recent reduction in US tariffs on Philippine goods from 20% to 19% has eased some external headwinds, while the central bank remains watchful of inflation risks from geopolitical tensions and external policy uncertainty,' it added. On the domestic front, the investment bank said foreign investors extended their net selling streak to their fifth consecutive week, registering a net outflow of RM1.14 billion, with the largest outflow recorded on Tuesday (RM291 million). 'The only two sectors that recorded net foreign inflows last week were industrial products and services (RM62.7 million) and transportation and logistics (RM36.2 million). 'The top three sectors that recorded the highest net foreign outflows were financial services (-RM344.3 million), healthcare (-RM239.1 million) and utilities (-RM210.2 million),' it said. The report, however, said that local institutions extended their net buying streak to two consecutive weeks, registering purchases of RM1.03 billion, 3.9 times higher than the previous week's inflow of RM263.7 million. 'Meanwhile, local retailers continued their net buying activities, extending to a fifth consecutive streak of purchases, posting a net inflow of RM105.5 million,' it said. MBSB said the average daily trading volume experienced a broad-based decline last week, with foreign investors and local retailers recording a decline of 6.6% and 6.1%, respectively, while local institutions saw an increase of 4.8%.

Trump urges China to quadruple soybean orders
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged China to quadruple its soybean purchases ahead of a key tariff truce deadline, sending Chicago soybean prices higher, though analysts were quick to question the feasibility of any such deal. In a late night post on Truth Social, Trump said China was worried about a shortage of soybeans and he hoped it would quickly quadruple its soybean orders from the U.S. "Rapid service will be provided. Thank you President XI," Trump said in his post. The most active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) jumped 2.38% to $10.11 a bushel at 0637 GMT on Monday after Trump's post. The contract was steady earlier. China, the world's largest soybean buyer, imported roughly 105 million metric tons last year, just under a quarter coming from the U.S. and most of the remainder from Brazil. Quadrupling shipments would require China to import the bulk of its soybeans from the U.S. "It's highly unlikely that China would ever buy four times its usual volume of soybeans from the U.S.," said Johnny Xiang, founder of Beijing-based AgRadar Consulting. A tariff truce between Beijing and Washington is set to expire on August 12, but the Trump administration has hinted that the deadline may be extended. It is unclear if securing China's agreement to buy more U.S. soybeans is a condition for extending the truce as Trump looks to reduce China's trade surplus with the U.S. China's soymeal futures fell 0.65% to 3,068 yuan per metric ton on expectations U.S. imports could increase supply. China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Under the Phase One trade deal signed during Trump's first term, China agreed to boost purchases of U.S. agricultural products, including soybeans. However, Beijing fell far short of meeting those targets. This year, amid Washington-Beijing trade tensions, it has yet to buy any fourth quarter U.S. beans, fuelling concerns as the U.S. harvest export season approaches. "On Beijing's side, there have been quite a few signals that China is prepared to forego U.S. soybeans altogether this year, including booking those test cargoes of soymeal from Argentina," said Even Rogers Pay, an agricultural analyst at Trivium China. Reuters previously reported that Chinese feedmakers have purchased three Argentine soymeal cargoes as they aim to secure cheaper South American supplies amid concerns about a possible soybean supply disruption in the fourth quarter. U.S. soybean industry has been seeking alternative buyers, but no other country matches China's scale. Last year, China imported 22.13 million tons of soybeans from the U.S., and 74.65 million tons from Brazil. - Reuters
