‘World No. 2 just a number': M. Thinaah says consistency matters most

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — National women's doubles ace M. Thinaah is more concerned with consistency than occupying the world number two ranking with her partner, Pearly Tan. The 27-year-old Thinaah said their priority is to remain consistent on the court and get positive results in every competitive outing. 'For me, being world number two is just a number. For us, the main thing is to continue performing consistently and always supporting each other every time we take to the court,' she told reporters after a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara here today. Thinaah also said that their preparation is proceeding smoothly ahead of the 2025 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships scheduled to be held in Paris from Aug 25 to Sept 1. 'Actually, we are really excited to be back on court training together... definitely, the world meet is a big tournament and one that we are really excited to be competing in. We are just looking forward to it and preparing well for it,' she said. On Tuesday (July 29), Pearly-Thinaah moved up one spot for a career-high world number two position in the latest BWF rankings. They have performed consistently this season — winning the Thailand Open, emerging runners-up in the Indonesia Open, advancing to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters and qualifying for the last eight of the Singapore Open. Their latest achievement saw them emerge as runners-up in last month's Japan Open after losing to world number one Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China in the final. — Bernama

MFL: M-League teams can register three more local players for new season

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — All the teams competing in the 2025-2026 Malaysia League (M-League) season can add three more local players to their squad, taking the total number of players they can register to 33. The Malaysian Football League (MFL) said the MFL Board of Directors decided this at a special meeting recently after considering applications seeking additional quota for local players from several clubs, particularly from the Malaysia A1 Semi-Pro League. 'This is because these clubs, during the first season, are exempted from having developmental teams (President's Cup, Youth Cup, Under-17 and Under-10), in addition to the abolishment of the MFL Cup for the 2025-2026 season. 'Therefore, the additional quota of three local players can provide more player options for clubs without developmental teams,' the MFL said in a statement today. However, it stressed that clubs don't need to fill up the additional three local player quota. Instead, the decision depends on the requirements and financial capability of the clubs, in view of this season's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, with clubs limited to spending a maximum of 80 per cent of their annual budget on player salaries. With the addition of three local players, the M-League clubs can now register 33 players — 18 local players and 15 foreigners. All clubs can register their players until the closing date of the first transfer window on August 31, while the second transfer window will be from January 5, 2026, to February 1, 2026. — Bernama

Sarawakian golfer Mirabel Ting clinches maiden pro win

KUCHING, Aug 1 — Sarawakian golf star Mirabel Ting Ern Hui achieved a major milestone in her blossoming career, capturing her first professional title just weeks after turning pro on July 3. The 19-year-old from Miri delivered a commanding performance to secure a nine-shot victory at the PGM Royal Pahang Championship, held at the Pahang Royal Golf Club, finishing with a three-day total of 14-under-par 202. Mirabel was in control from start to finish in the 54-hole tournament, opening with a 67, then surging ahead with a brilliant 65 on Wednesday to take a five-shot lead into the final round. She closed with a composed two-under 70 on Thursday and was the only player in the women's field to shoot under par in all three rounds. This marks Mirabel's second career win on the PGM Tour, her first being at the Fortuner Cup in June 2023, when she was still an amateur. The win also earned her RM10,000 in prize money. Veteran pro Aretha Pan finished runner-up with a five-under 211 (68-69-74), while fellow Sarawakian Zulaikah Nasser claimed third place at even-par 216 (73-72-71). Reflecting on her win, Mirabel paid a heartfelt tribute to her late grandfather, Ng Siaw Pheng, who introduced her to the sport. 'He always hoped I'd turn pro and compete at the highest level,' she told the New Straits Times. 'He was always there for me and Malcolm (my brother) whenever we returned to Miri.' Mirabel said she was thrilled to be playing at home and alongside her brother. 'This win means a lot,' she added. The former world No. 2 amateur made her professional debut earlier this month at the Amundi Evian Championship in France, one of the LPGA's five majors. Although she missed the cut, she has now bounced back impressively on home soil. — The Borneo Post
