49ers sign former Saints wide receiver who led the team in yards just a few years ago

Equanimeous St. Brown's time with the San Francisco 49ers proved to be brief, with the former New Orleans Saints wide receiver being released among a flurry of roster moves after just one week at training camp. But another ex-Saint replaced St. Brown in the lineup with Marquez Callaway getting a chance to prove himself in the NFL. St. Brown didn't make many fans last year in New Orleans (dissing the city's proud food scene didn't help his case), but it's tough to find a new team in August. San Francisco is still managing injuries to high-profile wideouts like Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall, who started camp on the PUP list.
Callaway, 27, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee back in 2020 and led the Saints in receiving yards in 2021 (698). But he couldn't maintain that pace once guys like Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed joined the receiving corps, and Callaway has since bounced around the league with appearances on the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made a short return to New Orleans in-between those different stops. Now he's getting a look in San Francisco.
We'll see if Callaway can win a roster spot and suit up against his old team when the 49ers come to New Orleans on Sept. 14. As for St. Brown? He'll go into free agency hoping to catch on somewhere else. The Saints didn't work to retain him after his contract expired in January, but he could have options around the league. He's caught 63 passes for 928 yards and a touchdown in 62 career games. Good luck to him.

Former Notre Dame football wide receiver has been put on season-ending injured reserve

There was plenty of hype for former Notre Dame wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown after his sophomore season in South Bend where he caught 58 receptions for 961 yards and 9 touchdowns. The production would drop off significantly the following year, but he still opted to leave for the NFL. St. Brown was picked by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round, but never had more than 25-catches in any of his three seasons with them. He'd move onto the Chicago Bears in 2022 and 2023, against not putting up numbers to for his new team to play him more. St. Brown would then play with the New Orleans Saints, but only on their practice squad. This year brought a new opportunity with the San Francisco 49ers, but it started off very rocky. Signed on July 22nd, he'd get released about a month later, only to get resigned a few days after that on Aug. 5th. The bad luck with the 49ers continued on Friday, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that St. Brown has been put on season-ending Injured Reserve List. The move effectively ends St. Browns season before it even started, as he will now try and work back to playing, most likely with another organization. Dibling among trio to not feature against Wrexham amid transfer talks

SAINTS manager Will Still confirmed Tyler Dibling will not be available to face Wrexham as talks around his transfer exit continue. Dibling, 19, is one of three players who will not be selected by the boss as they ponder their future amid a likely departure this summer. Sam Edozie, in talks with Strasbourg, and Joe Aribo, in the final year of his contract, will also not face the newly-promoted side on Saturday. Dibling has been put into non-contact individual training by Saints as they look to protect their £50million-valued asset in the transfer window. Ahead of facing Wrexham, Still explained: "There are a few players who are where they're at in their career and making choices. "Tyler won't be there. Sam Edozie won't be there, and Joe Aribo won't be in the squad either." Charlie Taylor, Will Smallbone, James Bree and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are also sidelined with injuries ahead of the Championship season opener. Still added: "Charlie's still got a couple of more days in front of him before he can get minutes in his legs but he's been back in training for a few days. "This is good but he won't be in the squad just yet. Will Smallbone has got a calf injury, so he'll be out for a little while. James Bree, same thing. "He'll be out for a bit with his leg as well after coming off last weekend. And Taylor Harwood-Bellis is nearing match fitness. "He looks really good in training, but he's obviously been out for quite a while, so we're not going to force him back into it now - next week."

Alvin Kamara's must-see 29-yard touchdown is the Saints Play of the Day

Our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener has reached 29 days, which means this 29-yard touchdown by Alvin Kamara is the Saints Play of the Day. Now, that's a gross oversimplification of the play; Kamara didn't just sprint 29 yards downfield and score. You can see it all unfold for yourself right here, but let's break it down. Dennis Allen's defense had just stopped the Seahawks on fourth down, and Bridgewater went to work, flipping the field with a series of sharp passes to Ted Ginn Jr. (for 5 yards), Michael Thomas (14 yards), Jared Cook (7 yards), and Kamara (3 yards), until the offense set up on Seattle's 29-yard line. Then, with just 42 seconds left in the half, Sean Payton called a screen. And the Saints executed it beautifully. Ryan Ramczyk and Terron Armstead hung back to throw some Seahawks defenders around and give Kamara room to run. Teddy Bridgewater gave him a great pass. Ahead of him, Erik McCoy, Larry Warford, and Andrus Peat got downhill to open a lane (with Ginn throwing a key block at the second level). Two Seahawks closed in but Kamara quite literally slipped through their fingers to tiptoe down the sideline and into the end zone for six points. This was, at the time, one of Kamara's biggest games. He totaled 161 yards from scrimmage on the afternoon (69 as a rusher, 92 as a receiver) and later scored another touchdown to extend the lead. This was the Saints' first full game without Drew Brees, who had torn a ligament in his throwing hand a week earlier against the Los Angeles Rams, and there were real doubts that they could win without him. Instead, Bridgewater and Kamara and their teammates saved the season by winning six weeks in a row. And it all started here in Seattle.
