Bulls rumors: The $80 million contract Chicago offered Josh Giddey at start of free agency
One of the major questions for the Chicago Bulls this offseason has involved the future of point guard Josh Giddey, who turned into a triple double machine down the stretch of last season. Still, for a while it has appeared that the two sides are quite far apart on talks for a potential new deal to keep the former Oklahoma City Thunder lottery pick in the Windy City.
Recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer took to Marc Stein's Substack to reveal the initial contract that Chicago offered Giddey earlier this offseason, and how things have unfolded from there.
'League sources say that the Bulls made an offer of $80 million over four years to restricted free agent Josh Giddey when the offseason commenced on June 30,' reported Fischer. 'Giddey, of course, is seeking an annual salary in the $30 million range. Chicago has been anchored in the $20 million range in annual value ever since its original offer.'
Fischer also reported that some other teams have been interested in potential sign and trade scenarios for Giddey, but that thus far, nothing has materialized on that front.
'The Bulls have likewise become generally known over the past few years as a team that can be challenging to talk trade with. Rival executives have had trouble for several trade deadlines in a row trying to pinpoint whether the Bulls were or weren't looking to offload some of their veteran players,' noted Fischer.
A big decision for the Bulls
While the Bulls' season ended in familiar fashion last year–a play-in game exit vs the Miami Heat–it was a bit easier of a pill to swallow for Chicago fans considering that this time around, their team was led by young talent as opposed to aging vets like DeMar DeRozan.
A big part of that youth movement was the emergence of Giddey, who played the best basketball of his career down the stretch of last season and showcased the playmaking at 6'8″ that made him an intriguing draft prospect back in 2021.
It remains to be seen whether the Bulls and Giddey will finally come to terms on a new deal any time in the near future.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams appears to be more and more comfortable with his new head coach Ben Johnson by the day. Coming into this season after an offseason filled with upgrades to the coaching staff and roster, specifically the offensive line, Williams has to pay off the investment the organization has made into him during this year. In order to do so, Williams will have to show development and production under Johnson, one of the most respected offensive minds in the NFL. Williams looked quite impressive in the short showing, completing 6-of-10 passes for 107 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions or sacks. Speaking to the media after the game, Williams jokingly complimented his head coach for being "calmer" during the game in comparison to how he is at practice. 'He's a lot more calmer on game day in the mic than he is in practice with me," Williams said. "It's great. It's exciting to be sitting there, having the headpiece in my ear right after I had however many plays I had, being able to listen to him encourage the guys. I think there was a moment where we were going for it on fourth down or something like that and something happened the play before where we got the call back and we ended up lining up. He was like, 'We're going to go get this right here.' "It's just small notes like that, that are encouraging in the moment. It's something that I don't know if he knows and he's conscious of it, but it's important to us QBs when we're out there having those small notes. He's a lot calmer on game days in the mic and that's a small note.' There was no secret that Johnson was going to come in and apply pressure to Williams quickly in order to have the young quarterback understand his offense in their first year together. The quicker that Williams can pick up the offense, the quicker the team can erase the memory of their 5-12 season last year and put more wins on the board this year while their quarterback grows and develops to the next level. High school sports participation rises nationally thanks to assist from girls flag football
The addition of girls flag football is helping fuel rising participation in high school sports nationally, with a record 8,260,891 boys and girls having participated in the last school year, according to the annual survey from the National Federation of State High School Assns. released on Monday. There were 68,847 girls playing flag football, a 60% increase from the previous year. Girls sports led the increases, including wrestling rising 15%. Football remains the most popular boys sports at 1,001,039. Track and field tops girls sports at 513,808. Girls flag football has been rising in popularity in Southern California. Joe Flacco was obvious QB1 pick, but plenty still needs to be settled in Browns' QB room
There were attempts to manufacture some drama over the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback decision, but it was the exact outcome we've all known for months. Joe Flacco is the starter. No surprise at all. Thankfully, there's still plenty of actual drama to be sorted out in the Browns' quarterback room. Flacco will start in Week 1 but one look at an absolutely brutal six-game stretch to start the season indicates that it might not be a long-term solution. Cleveland is very likely to use more than one quarterback this season. But due to injuries and an odd four-man derby at quarterback, which was created when the team made the unconventional decision to draft two quarterbacks in the middle rounds, it's uncertain what the order will be behind Flacco. And there's just one more preseason game to go. Joe Flacco expected to play Saturday The Browns have indicated they plan to play Flacco some in the preseason finale. Stefanski wants to use this week to simulate a regular-season week, and to do that he wanted his quarterback in place. Not that anyone paying attention thought it would be anyone but Flacco. So Flacco will play some, but presumably not too much. That means there will be some evaluation time for Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, though that's complicated too. Pickett hasn't played yet in the preseason due to a hamstring injury, but he did practice last week and presumably will be ready to play by Saturday. Sanders' status is unknown after he suffered an oblique injury in warmups before a joint practice last Wednesday. Gabriel, who missed the first preseason game, got the start with Sanders sitting last week. So Flacco hasn't played yet because he was the veteran starter who didn't need preseason reps in the first two games, Pickett hasn't played at all due to injury, Gabriel missed one game and Sanders missed one game. That makes the final decisions on the depth chart a little more challenging. Who will be Browns' backup? From all accounts, the depth chart at Browns camp has been fairly static. Flacco has been treated as the starter. Pickett has missed a lot of camp but there's no indication he's not second in line. Gabriel has been third and, even after a very good showing in Cleveland's first preseason game, Sanders has been fourth. That doesn't mean that is Stefanski's final answer on the depth chart. Gabriel played well last week aside from one pick-6, showing a good understanding of the offense and delivering passes accurately. Sanders' talent level was well above his status as a fifth-round pick, and he showed it in his one preseason game. The Browns will first need to decide how many quarterbacks to keep. It's very rare for a team to keep four, but it's an unusual situation. It doesn't seem likely a team would trade for Pickett, Flacco is already named the starter and trading Gabriel or Sanders a few months after trading them seems unlikely. Then, if the Browns do keep four, Stefanski has to order them. If Flacco gets benched, that's when the order will matter. And if Pickett is up next, the order between Gabriel and Sanders will matter if he gets benched later in the season. Perhaps some of that gets settled in Saturday's preseason finale. We know Flacco will be the Browns' starter to begin the season. The rest still seems unsettled.
