
UMS study on student lifestyle habits

Kota Kinabalu: The Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK) healthy lifestyle campaign aimed at encouraging positive health behaviour among undergraduates is underway. Over the next six months, students will take part in activities aimed at encouraging them to do moderate exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, take five servings of vegetables and fruits a day, and eat a balanced meal based on the Malaysian Healthy Plate recommendation. A preliminary study in March revealed that students lack sufficient exercise, and a majority don't follow healthy living and eating recommendations. UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansur who launched the campaign said a healthy lifestyle is important in reducing absenteeism among staff and students, and in keeping productivity levels up. He commended the Sabah Health Department through the Health Promotion Branch for the collaboration, which he described as strategic in improving health outcomes and which could later be extended to the whole campus, and to UMS branches in Labuan and Sandakan. 'The Higher Education Ministry also promotes walking 10,000 steps a day. At UMS, we have the walk and talk programme on Wednesday evenings which provides an opportunity for lecturers, staff and students to discuss matters while walking and I hope we can continue with this. 'UMS offers trails for walks, and we just opened one more recently. UMS is a safe space for physical activities,' he said, adding that he walks up six floors to his office at the Chancellory Building to stay fit. Kasim said to bring down the escalating medical costs at UMS, staff and students need to practice a healthy lifestyle and should do recreational activities for at least an hour a day. The campaign which is championing the Ministry of Health's Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS), is a collaboration between the UMS-UNICEF Communication for Development (C4D) Research Unit which is based at the faculty, and the Health Promotion Branch of the Sabah Health Department. The campaign was mooted by the Health Promotion Branch which approached the UMS-UNICEF C4D Research Unit. The Research Unit focuses on the use of evidence-based research and communication interventions to change behaviours. The campaign officially known as FSSK x ANMS, with FSSK referring to acronym for the faculty, has adopted #MoveMunchBalance as its tagline for all communication messages and materials. UMS-UNICEF C4D Research Unit head Dr Latif Lai explained 'Move' refers to the need to have at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, 'Munch' to eating five servings of vegetables and fruits a day and to make this a lifelong habit, and 'Balance' refers to following the Malaysian Healthy Plate recommendation that promotes half a portion of vegetables and fruits and a quarter portion each of carbohydrates and protein. Some 200 students took part in the launch at the faculty today, which also saw the Vice Chancellor joining them in an exercise routine, before flagging them off for a 10,000 steps walk. New task force needed to monitor animal-to-human disease risks, say experts
KOTA KINABALU: Experts from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have called for the formation of an interdisciplinary task force to address the growing threat of zoonotic diseases in Borneo. They said the task force should include representatives from government agencies, academic institutions and conservation bodies. In a joint statement, UMS Biotechnology Research Institute's Professor Dr Vijay Kumar and Associate Professor Dr Zarina Amin said that while Borneo's biodiversity is unparalleled, increasing infrastructural development has raised the risk of zoonotic spillovers - where pathogens jump from animals to humans. "In Sabah, where human-wildlife interactions are frequent, biosurveillance must remain a priority. "The spread of infectious diseases not only threatens public health, but also tourism, agriculture and conservation efforts." A well-documented example is Plasmodium knowlesi malaria, transmitted from macaques to humans by mosquitoes. In addition, several previously unknown coronaviruses - similar to SARS and COVID-19 - have been detected in bats in Sabah, highlighting the risks faced by tourists and locals visiting bat-inhabited caves. Sabah's poultry farms have also experienced outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in 2018, while neighbouring Sarawak continues to battle rabies, which accounts for nearly all reported cases in Malaysia. Livestock and wildlife diseases are an increasing concern. Strains of Newcastle Disease Virus and Infectious Bronchitis Virus have impacted Sabah's poultry industry, while African Swine Fever has devastated wild and farmed pig populations. Marine wildlife is not spared either. On Mabul Island and surrounding waters, an increasing number of sea turtles are suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a herpesvirus-linked disease. Melioidosis, which thrives in Sabah's tropical soil, has infected humans and wildlife - including orangutans and macaques. Leptospirosis also remains a persistent threat. "Looking ahead, large-scale developments such as Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, in East Kalimantan could significantly disrupt Borneo's ecosystems. "Increased deforestation, agricultural expansion, and hydropower projects will likely escalate human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and disease spillovers." The experts urged for a strengthened One Health approach, combining genomic surveillance, AI analytics, public education, enforcement against poaching, sustainable land-use policies, and better policy integration and funding.

JANS, UMS to boost cooperation over campus water issue

KOTA KINABALU: The State Works Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) water supply problems through coordinated discussions and site visits involving the Sabah Water Department (JANS). Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, also Works Minister, said the meetings focused on identifying both short- and long-term solutions, with key issues such as water theft, incomplete pipe works, and technical challenges already identified. He added that JANS has agreed to enhance technical cooperation with UMS, including ensuring consistent water flow to the R13 tank and assisting with pump operations. Shahelmey also announced that a new indicator has been installed at the R13 tank, with a digital version to be fitted once delivered within the next week. Stop the blame game, solve UMS water crisis together

'Enough with finger-pointing and turning social media into a battlefield,' he said in a statement. Fairuz stressed that the Water Department and UMS must work together constructively instead of publicly shifting blame. 'They should meet, talk, go on-site, and address the issue maturely.
