Stop the blame game, solve UMS water crisis together

Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan has urged all parties involved in the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) water crisis to stop blaming each other and focus on finding a solution. 'Enough with finger-pointing and turning social media into a battlefield,' he said in a statement. Fairuz stressed that the Water Department and UMS must work together constructively instead of publicly shifting blame. 'They should meet, talk, go on-site, and address the issue maturely. Sabah Umno urges action on hospital parking woes

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Noraini Idris wants the Health Minister to address the parking shortage at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital (HWKKS) in Likas, describing the situation as a matter of human dignity rather than mere convenience. The former senator said she received numerous complaints from pregnant women forced to walk long distances in their condition due to inadequate parking facilities at the hospital. Advertisement 'I cannot imagine how a mother carrying a small child feels or an anxious husband accompanying his wife who is about to give birth, having to circle around looking for parking while the life and health of their loved ones are at stake,' Noraini said in a statement, here, Thursday. 'This is no longer a matter of comfort. This is a matter of dignity, a matter of humanity,' she said. She cited cases where heavily pregnant women have had to park as far away as the Kingfisher commercial area and walk to the hospital in hot weather, rain or even while experiencing labour pains. She noted that the parking issue extends beyond the HWKKS' to nearly all major hospitals in Sabah, including Queen Elizabeth Hospital I and II, Tawau Hospital and Sandakan Hospital. Nizam distributes 23 cows in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha

TAWAU: Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan distributed 23 sacrificial cows to eight District Polling Centres (PDM), security agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and several associations in the district on Friday. He said the contribution was made in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration to strengthen bonds between leaders, the community and security forces. Advertisement He added that the act of 'qurban' (sacrificial slaughter) not only reinforces one's faith but also enhances the relationship between leaders and the grassroots, while offering the community an opportunity to understand the significance of sacrifice. 'The qurban ritual carries a profound message of unity and mutual aid among Muslims. Hari Raya Aidiladha is not just a celebration, but a reflection of the values of sacrifice, sincerity and compassion,' he said during the handover ceremony at the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD). New IRB Sabah Director calls on Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor received a courtesy call from the new Director of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Sabah, Datin Dayang Halimah Awang Ahmad, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Thursday. Dayang Halimah, who hails from Tawau, has held the position since March 1, 2025. Advertisement Prior to this, she served as the State Operations Director (Corporate Tax Audit) of IRB Sabah. Hajiji congratulated Dayang Halimah on her appointment and expressed confidence that the close ties between the State Government and IRB would be further strengthened to ensure more efficient and comprehensive revenue management. He said the Government remains committed to supporting efforts to enhance revenue collection in a fair and effective manner, in line with the State's development needs and the wellbeing of its people. Dayang Halimah said the visit was to introduce herself, as well as to discuss strategic collaboration between IRB and the State Government in areas such as tax compliance and revenue management. During the meeting, she also shared the direction and plans of IRB Sabah, including initiatives to expand service outreach and raise public awareness on taxation.
