TAWAU: Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan distributed 23 sacrificial cows to eight District Polling Centres (PDM), security agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and several associations in the district on Friday. He said the contribution was made in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration to strengthen bonds between leaders, the community and security forces.
Advertisement He added that the act of 'qurban' (sacrificial slaughter) not only reinforces one's faith but also enhances the relationship between leaders and the grassroots, while offering the community an opportunity to understand the significance of sacrifice. 'The qurban ritual carries a profound message of unity and mutual aid among Muslims. Hari Raya Aidiladha is not just a celebration, but a reflection of the values of sacrifice, sincerity and compassion,' he said during the handover ceremony at the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD). Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, called on the public to appreciate the peace in the country, which enables religious celebrations to be held in harmony. 'We must safeguard the blessings we have. Through programmes like this, we hope to maintain the peace we enjoy for generations to come,' he said.

Fadhlina assures parents that boarding schools still safe
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. BUKIT MERTAJAM: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has given assurance that all fully residential schools across the country are safe. She noted that the Ministry of Education (MOE) continually enhances safety measures and remains committed to ensuring a secure and conducive educational ecosystem that positively impacts student development. Advertisement 'I want to assure parents that these schools remain safe and we are continuously strengthening safety measures and making improvements in all aspects. 'So, don't worry as we are constantly improving measures to strengthen the ecosystem of our residential schools further,' she told reporters after the handover ceremony of mock cheques to 12 schools for autistic children at Sekolah Sinar Harapan here today. Fadhlina was responding to the statement made by Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin during a Dewan Rakyat sitting on Tuesday, in which he claimed that parents in Sabah are reluctant to send their children to boarding schools due to bullying. Fadhlina said the 72 fully residential schools nationwide remain a top choice for parents, stressing that tackling bullying requires collective effort, not the responsibility of one party alone. Advertisement 'At the ministry level, we have taken various measures to tackle bullying, including strengthening school SOPs and ensuring teacher presence during school hours to enhance monitoring,' she said. Fadhlina added that MOE will take firm action against students guilty of bullying, including suspension, during which they will undergo an intervention programme, 'Bangkit Bermaruah', a community service initiative under district education offices. She also said that the ministry is reinforcing the role of school counsellors through training and exposure to help identify warning signs or students at risk of committing disciplinary offences, enabling early intervention and a more comprehensive approach to tackle bullying. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Myanmar's junta-picked figurehead president dies
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Myanmar's former acting president Myint Swe was vice-president under the democratically elected government of Suu Kyi. (EPA Images pic) YANGON: Myanmar's military-appointed figurehead president – suspended from service since last year due to declining health – died on Thursday, a junta statement said. Former general Myint Swe was named Myanmar's acting president in 2021, when the military deposed the democratic government of Aung San Suu Kyi in a coup, sparking a many-sided civil war. Advertisement The coup handed supreme power to armed forces chief Min Aung Hlaing, who last July also took over Myint Swe's ceremonial role as 'acting president' as he suffered the effects of Parkinson's disease. 'President U Myint Swe passed away at 8.28 am this morning,' said a junta statement, adding the 74-year-old had died in a hospital in the capital Naypyidaw. 'It is hereby announced that the funeral of Pro Tem President U Myint Swe will be held as a state funeral.' State media said on Wednesday he was experiencing 'weight loss, loss of appetite, fever and a decline in cognitive function' and had been admitted to intensive care. Advertisement Myint Swe was vice-president under the democratically elected government of Suu Kyi – who remains jailed four-and-a-half years on from the military takeover. The coup sparked pro-democracy protests that were quashed, before activists quit the cities to wage guerrilla warfare – finding common cause with ethnic armed groups that have long resisted central rule. Min Aung Hlaing last week ended the nationwide state of emergency declared during the takeover, touting plans for an election in December as an off-ramp to the conflict consuming the country. The move handed power from the office of the armed forces chief – occupied by Min Aung Hlaing – back to the president's office – also held by Min Aung Hlaing. Opposition groups have pledged to boycott the poll, while a UN expert in June described the exercise as a 'fraud' designed to legitimise the junta's continued rule. No exact date has yet been set for the election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He said the matter still requires thorough discussion before any decision can be made. Advertisement 'We'll discuss that. It's too early,' he told reporters briefly after attending the Budget Engagement Session at the Finance Ministry's headquarters here. On Monday, former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli suggested in the Dewan Rakyat that Malaysia should consider allowing students to complete secondary school by 16, enabling them to enter the workforce by 21. He said the policy shift was worth considering as the country moves towards becoming an ageing nation, stressing the need for a younger workforce to begin contributing to the economy earlier. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
