Red Bulls in talks to bring in Timo Werner from RB Leipzig amid injury woes
The Red Bulls have been in talks to bring over German international Timo Werner to New York from RB Leipzig, according to multiple reports. A deal has not been reached between the two sides, but there appears to be optimism that an agreement will come together to bring Werner to MLS. The German winger has been on the Red Bulls' radar for some time and even had the option of joining the team last summer, The Athletic reported. Chelsea's Timo Werner in action with Wolverhampton Wanderers' Francisco Trincao on May 7, 2022. REUTERS Talks to bring Werner have been ongoing for some time, the outlet also reported, and it would bring the 29-year-old back together with former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg, who moved stateside last year to join the Red Bulls. Werner spent the past 18 months on loan with Tottenham Hotspur, where he saw his role decrease over time. He helped Leipzig win the DFB-Pokal in 2023, marking the first trophy the club had won in its history. He first joined Leipzig in 2016 in a move from Stuttgart and went on to score 78 goals in 127 Bundesliga appearances, eventually making the jump to Premier League side Chelsea in 2020. Werner was part of the team that won the 2021 Champions League final. He returned to Leipzig in 2022 and moved to Tottenham on loan at the start of the 2024 calendar year. While Werner has seen a bit of a fall from grace, he would be a big addition for a Red Bulls team that's sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference and has seen several players leave their latest match due to injuries. AP He could be a solid piece up front with Forsberg and star Lewis Morgan, who suffered an injury in the Red Bulls' draw with Toronto on Wednesday night. The Red Bulls are coming off a run to the MLS Cup, which ended with a loss to the LA Galaxy, and an active offseason that saw them bring in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who has been one of the top scorers in the league. Werner is not the only player the Red Bulls are in talks with. The team has been in advanced talks with Swedish midfielder Gustav Berggren, amNewYork reported earlier this week.

Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde called as witnesses in Barcelona corruption case
In the background of Spanish football, on the day that it was made public that the board of the Referees Committee had been sacked, rumbles the Negreira case. The corruption probe, in which former CTA Vice-President Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira and Barcelona stand accused of sporting corruption, is moving closer to a trial. The case, which dominated headlines when it first emerged in 2022, has seen the authorities investigate a series of payments made to various companies in which Negreira was involved over a period of 17 years between 2001 and 2018, which total between €7m and €8m. Barcelona have denied any wrongdoing, claiming that Negreira was hired on a consultancy basis. Former Barcelona managers called as witnesses As reported by EFE and quoted by MD, former Barcelona managers Ernesto Valverde and Luis Enrique will called to the stand by the prosecution to testify in the trial. The current Athletic Club coach was in charge between 2017 and 2020, while the Paris Saint-Germain manager was in charge of the Blaugrana for the three seasons before. The prosecution are keen to get testimony on the effectiveness of the refereeing reports that Barcelona received from Negreira. Image via EFE Barcelona President Joan Laporta will also testify Current President Joan Laporta will also be called to the stand. Originally Laporta was under investigation as part of the corruption probe, but has been dropped from the case as his involvement was outwith the statute of limitations. However the prosecution consider that hsi testimony on the motive behind contracting Negreira will be significant to their case. Uncertainty over trial It is still not clear when the case will be brought to trial. The Courts in Barcelona recently granted an extension to the investigation, as they seek statements from some of those involved. That includes former presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, who are due to speak with the authorities in September.
