YouTube now the second most-watched media service in the UK
However, YouTube is 'leading the charge' in the streaming takeover of TV sets, with the service now the first place younger viewers go as soon as they switch on.
Young adults are driving the YouTube trend, research shows (Ofcom/PA)
At home, people spent 39 minutes a day on YouTube in 2024, with 16 minutes of this on the household's TV set.
Younger adults aged 16 to 34 are driving the trend, watching 18 minutes of YouTube a day on TV, while one in five children aged four to 15 (20%) head straight to the app as soon as they turn the set on.
Even those aged over 55 have almost doubled the time they spend watching YouTube on their TVs compared with the previous year – up from six minutes a day in January 2023 to 11 minutes in December.
YouTube's soaring popularity comes as the platform's content has evolved, with half of its top-trending videos now more closely resembling traditional TV, including long-form interviews and game shows, Ofcom said.
On average, people spent 4% less time watching broadcast TV on TV sets than in 2023, with their average viewing dropping to two hours and 24 minutes a day, according to the report.
Just as in 2023, a decline was seen across all age groups except adults aged 75 and over.
Ed Leighton, Ofcom's interim group director for strategy and research, said: 'Scheduled TV is increasingly alien to younger viewers, with YouTube the first port of call for many when they pick up the TV remote.
'But we're also seeing signs that older adults are turning to the platform as part of their daily media diet too.
'Public service broadcasters are recognising this shift – moving to meet audiences in the online spaces where they increasingly spend their time. But we need to see even more ambition in this respect to ensure that public service media that audiences value survives long into the future.'
Gavin & Stacey, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Mr Bates vs The Post Office were the most-watched TV programmes and films of 2024.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale was the most-watched programme of the year, averaging 18.6 million viewers across BBC One and BBC iPlayer on TV sets.

Devastation as EastEnders fan-favourite reconsiders return
Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) has been left devastated in EastEnders, after learning daughter Lily (Lillia Turner) has postponed her return to Walford. Lily made a temporary departure in May, after realising that she needed time away from her mum in the wake of her step-father Martin Fowler's (James Bye) death. Martin tragically passed away in February, falling victim to the horrific explosion that tore through The Queen Vic pub. There seemed to be a glimmer of hope as he made his exit towards the barrel store with Stacey, but a beam fell from the ceiling and crushed him. As he lay dying, he confessed his love for Stace – telling her that his reunion with Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) was a mistake. In the aftermath, she struggled immensely with her grief, neglecting to care for Lily and her younger siblings Arthur and Hope. Lily even turned to drink and drugs to ease her own pain. A vicious argument between mother and daughter ensued, and Lily declared that she was packing her bags and going to stay with birth father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott). In tonight's episode, Stacey was thrilled to hear that her eldest was coming home. Amid the buzz and excitement, she noticed that a number of market traders were staring in her direction and gossiping. But what about? To her horror, it became apparent that someone had leaked all of her SecretCam content – the BBC soap's dupe version of OnlyFans – online, for all to see. And given we saw troubled Joel Marshall (Max Murray) accessing her profile last week, it's probably who we'd put our money on being responsible! In fact, following their earlier run-in, Stace' reckoned it was him too. She charged into the caff and outright accused him, with dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) leaping to his defence. Joel swore that he wasn't responsible, and back at home, willingly handed over his laptop to prove that he didn't leak the adult material. More Trending He also told Ross and Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) to check his deleted files, as they wouldn't find anything that would incriminate him. Despite that, Stacey remained convinced – especially when she realised that the wording in the online posts matched what he'd said to her in person during a verbal attack. To make matters worse for poor Stace', she then discovered that Lily wasn't returning home as she was too embarrassed by the revenge porn situation. Harry is estranged from his brother the Prince of Wales after a bitter fallout and has a troubled relationship with his father the King. – Meet Me At The Lake The 'romance feature' is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Carley Fortune. 'This romantic drama follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise,' Netflix says. No date has been announced for the project – news of which first emerged two years ago. The story deals with mental health, postnatal depression and childhood trauma over losing a parent in a car crash, with some of the themes said to have similarities with Harry and Meghan's own experience. – Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within The new documentary short, by Campfire Studios in Association with Wontanara Productions and Archewell Productions, will focus on a tiny orphanage in Uganda which was borne out of the HIV/Aids crisis. Harry and Meghan are listed among the producers and the documentary will be released later this year. The duke only recently stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded nearly 20 years ago to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, following a boardroom battle with its chairwoman. Netflix says: 'In the heart of Uganda's Masaka region, where the shadows of the HIV/Aids crisis linger, a small orphanage becomes a beacon of hope. 'Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within goes beyond the viral videos to reveal a vibrant, one-of-a-kind community where orphaned children transform hardship into joy, dancing their way toward healing, belonging, and the promise of a brighter future.' It is not known whether Harry and Meghan will feature in the documentary. – Future projects Archewell Productions says it is 'in active development on additional projects with Netflix that span a variety of content genres'. The Sussexes' contract has been described as a 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects'.
