Crowds pack Cardigan for Barley Saturday celebrations
The local programme closely mirrors events happening across the UK to honour Victory in Europe Day, marking the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945.
The day will begin at 9:00am in the centre of Trefin with the reading of the VE Day 80 Proclamation, Together We Stand, followed by the raising of a special VE Day 80 flag to unite the nation in remembrance of those who sacrificed so much during the war.
At 12 noon, in Trefin Square, piper LCpl Spencer of Cawdor Barracks will perform Celebratum, a tune specially composed for the occasion.
At 6:30pm, Llanrhian Church bell will ring out in unison with churches and cathedrals across the UK. Simultaneously in Trefin Square, the 'Lamp Light of Peace' will be blessed, and a handbell performance by local adults and children will take place. Participants are encouraged to wear wartime-style clothing, with prizes awarded for the best costumes.
Evening celebrations will then move to The Ship Inn, where a fish and chip supper will be served (advance booking and payment required). A display of wartime memorabilia will also be available to view.
At around 8:00pm, the community will proceed from The Ship Inn to Penlac field, overlooking the coast, for the continuation of the festivities. Attendees will be invited to sample the official Women's Institute VE Day 80 Orange and Ginger Cake. Warm clothing is recommended.
There will be music from the wartime era, and local choir Côr y Felin will lead a singalong of well-known songs from the period. Representatives from each decade since the end of the war will read the VE Day 80 Global Tribute, joining communities across the world. A minute's silence will be held in memory of those who did not return home, followed by a bugler performing the Last Post and Reveille. The piper will then play Flowers of the Forest.
Just before the lighting of the beacon at 9:30pm, the community will join nearly 1,000 choirs across the UK in singing I Vow to Thee, My Country. The coastal beacon is part of the official chain being lit across the country and worldwide (in respective time zones). The 'Lamplight of Peace' will also be lit in solidarity with lanterns around the globe.
Those wishing to continue the celebrations can return to The Ship Inn afterwards.
Organisers are encouraging all attendees to dress in wartime-themed attire throughout the day, with a prize for the best-dressed individual.
The events are being coordinated by the Gwelliant Trefin Improvement Group (GTI) and Llanrhian Connected Community. All are welcome.

Ben Stiller has left fans worried after revealing he is stepping back from directing the upcoming third season of Severance. The hit Apple TV+ drama has been hailed as much-watch TV by viewers and critics alike since it first premiered in 2022, following employees in the macrodata refinement team at the mysterious Lumon Industries. It emerges that they have undergone a procedure which disconnects their work selves (innies) from who they really are on the outside (outies), effectively creating two different people. Adam Scott leads the star-studded cast, alongside Britt Lower, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Christopher Walken, Tramell Tillman and Patricia Arquette. Ben serves as the executive producer for the series and has been behind the camera for the majority of the episodes so far – but confirmed that he will be taking a back seat from directing the third season. Instead, the LA Times reports that he will be focusing his efforts on a World War II survival film, which tells the story of an airman in occupied France who gets 'involved with the French Resistance'. Period drama branded ‘fantastic' streaming on Netflix
The 2023 period drama All The Light We Cannot See is currently streaming on Netflix UK. The limited series tells the story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) and a German soldier (Louis Hofmann) who attempt to weather the devastation of World War II together. It also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie in supporting roles, as Daniel and Etienne LeBlanc; Marie-Laure's father and uncle, respectively. Based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr, it was picked up for adaptation by Netflix in 2019, with Free Guy filmmaker Shawn Levy attached to direct and Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight on screenplay duties. All four episodes were first added to the streaming service in November 2023, where they remain to this day. 'When you decide, as I did, to open up the casting process to low vision and legally blind contenders for this protagonist, who is herself blind, it's not like you can go the usual route,' director Levy told Town & Country Magazine. 'It's not like the talent agencies have filled their rosters with actors who are blind; it's not a big pool. That's why I opened it up with a global casting search announced in a blitz, and we got hundreds and hundreds of self-tapes from people who just filmed an audition on their laptop or their phone. 'Among those, I noticed one from a young woman named Aria Mia Loberti, and while at that point I didn't know anything about her, I knew that there was something about her that popped,' the Deadpool & Wolverine director added.
