Five children missing as boat sinks in Miami

Three of the five children that were reported missing after a sailboat hit a barge and capsized off the shore in Florida have been rushed to hospital in critical condition. The frightening incident took place on Monday just before noon as rescuers pulled two victims from Biscayne Bay after the sailboat started sinking into the water. Paramedics were seen performing chest compressions on at least one victim while several divers were spotted in the water off Hibiscus Island in Miami Beach. In an update to X around 12.30pm, the Miami Beach Police Department said all victims had been found and accounted for - but the majority of the children were injured. A total of three children were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Trauma Center in critical condition and another was transported there in stable condition, police said. An adult female and another child were also on the boat, but they were not taken to the hospital. Six people - five children and one adult - were onboard. The children are between the ages of eight and 12, according to authorities. The sailboat was part of the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation, according to the Miami Yacht Club. 'Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved, and we are working closely with the appropriate authorities and organizations to understand the situation fully,' the organization said. Ashlee Sklute with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told Daily Mail that 'preliminary information indicates that a barge struck' the vessel, causing it to sink. The Miami Beach Police Department said they were 'managing a multi-agency critical incident' involving several emergency crews. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has since taken the lead on the investigation, the Miami Police Department said in an update around 12.50pm. Daily Mail contacted the Miami Beach Police Department, the City of Miami Beach and FWC for more information.

Alarm in Sicily as sister of feared Mafia boss is released

The sister of Italy's most notorious mafia fugitive has been freed from prison and returned to her home town in Sicily, prompting concerns she could inherit the legacy of a man accused of 50 murders who once boasted he 'filled a cemetery' single-handed. Matteo Messina Denaro, the brutal Cosa Nostra boss from Castelvetrano, was a key figure in the 1992 assassinations of the anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, as well as the kidnapping of an 11-year-old boy who was held for two years before being strangled and dissolved in acid. For three decades he was Italy's most wanted man, running his empire from hiding with the help of a network of loyalists. He was arrested in January 2023 and died in prison eight months later . During his long fugitive years, family members helped run his criminal operations, smuggling handwritten instructions to businessmen, corrupt officials and clan leaders.
