Dharwad ZP to open 44 Koosina Mane centres

Time of India04-07-2025
Dharwad: Dharwad zilla panchayat will set up 44 Koosina Manes (childcare centres) in gram panchayats in the district.
A total of 102 Koosina Manes have been already started in the district as per a target set up the state government.
The zilla panchayat has gone a step further by planning to build an additional 44 centres, ZP CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said.
Women labourers working under the MGNREGA scheme in rural areas often struggle to care for their children while at work. The government, recognising this issue, has established Koosina Mane centres in every gram panchayat. Koosina Manes support the care and nourishment of infants aged between six months and three years belonging to rural labourers and daily-wage workers.
Nutritional food
At the district level, a nutrition committee has been formed to monitor children's growth and provide a nutrient-rich diet. The food menu has been designed in coordination with the health department and the women and child development department to ensure physical and developmental needs are met.
Appointment of caretakers
To look after the children enrolled in these centres, caretakers will be appointed. The government has instructed gram panchayats to identify eight women holding active MGNREGA job cards, out of whom two will be selected as caretakers on a rotational basis for each centre. These caretakers will be paid wages under the MGNREGA scheme for 100 days. Women who have passed the 10th grade are eligible for this position, and appropriate training has been provided to them by the taluk panchayat, Bhuvanesh said.

Fruitful move: Janawada panchayat provides seasonal fruits to children at creche

Bidar: The Janawada gram panchayat (GP) in Bidar district has started providing seasonal fruits to children attending the Koosina Mane (creche) daycare centres. Aimed at improving nutrition and parental trust, the initiative currently benefits 30 children under the care of eight staff members. The model is gaining popularity and is being seen as a replicable example for other gram panchayats. Girish Badole, chief executive officer, Bidar zilla panchayat, told TOI that all the Koosina Manes are running successfully as the govt has already credited three instalments of funds. "Janawada GP is making good use of the funds by providing nutritional and seasonal fruits. It has become a role model for other gram panchayats," he added. Taluk panchayat executive officer Manik Rao Patil said that infusing care into policy thinking, Janawada GP has started distributing seasonal fruits to the children at creches. The move is aimed at providing additional nutrition to the children and reassuring the parents. "If the children love the vibe of the centres, then parents will send their kids without hesitation," he added. Vaijantha Bai Biradar, president, Janawada GP, said that villagers and members of GP decided during a gram sabha to add fruits to the food menu at Koosina Mane, aiming to delight kids and to have good hope for GP's initiative by villagers. "This initiative seeks to increase kids' regular attendance and bring recognition to the centre," she said. "As an MNREGA worker, I can focus on my fieldwork without worrying about my child's wellbeing, thanks to Koosina Mane's nutritious food and caring staff," shared Renuka Sanjukumar, an MNREGA worker. A total of 29 creches have been established in the Bidar block. The caretakers are well-trained. They are NREGA job card holders and have a minimum qualification of completing the matriculation.

Take necessary steps to overcome fertiliser shortage, says official

Ballari: KV Trilokchandra, district in-charge secretary of the commissioner, school education department, and ZP administrator, issued directives regarding precautionary steps to address the farmers' fertiliser shortage concerns. He gave these instructions while attending the quarterly KDP progress review meeting as the chairman of the zilla panchayat on Saturday. Joint director of agriculture Somasunder T explained that the district's fertiliser demand was calculated to be 27,025 metric tons until July. The total available quantity, including previous stock, was 34,163 metric tons. Currently, 25,887 metric tons were distributed, leaving 8,286 metric tons in storage. Trilokchandra emphasised that the agriculture department must take the high demand for urea from farmers seriously, despite the fertiliser stockpiling initiative. He recommended, "If there are any reports of fertilisers being sold at inflated prices or if artificial shortages are being created, the DC and SP should be notified." During the discussion regarding the health department, DC Prashant Kumar Mishra remarked that the BMCRC is lacking ambulances, and doctors and staff are failing to provide timely services to the public. "I receive daily complaints that they are charging for blood, medicines, and even the wheelchair service," he voiced his concerns. Trilokchandra instructed that power lines over anganwadi centres and schools must be removed, citing a court order. He directed DDPI, the women and child development officer, and Gescom officials to conduct an immediate survey and take necessary action. The meeting was attended by SP Shobharani VJ, zilla panchayat CEO Mohammed Harris Sumair, various district-level department officials, and EOs of taluk panchayats.
