Mohamed Salah breaks down in tears as Anfield sings for Diogo Jota right after injury-time goal in Premier League opener

Liverpool's return to Premier League action was a night of mixed emotions at Anfield, as joy on the pitch intertwined with a heartfelt tribute for late forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July. The Reds secured a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in their season opener, and Mohamed Salah, who scored the game's final goal, was moved to tears as fans paid tribute to Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who also died in the crash. The pair had been involved in a fatal accident on Spain's A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria on July 3, just days after Jota's wedding to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. Driving a Lamborghini, the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout, sending them off the road and ending their lives. Anfield paid a heartfelt gesture, displaying banners declaring the stadium will 'always be his home' and joining Salah in an emotional homage.
'They sang for him (Jota) before the game, in the first minute, after 20 minutes, and again at the end. It was so impressive, so powerful,' Liverpool head coach Arne Slot reflected after the game. 'His wife is here, his children are here, and for them it might be special to hear how much he's loved over here.'
A dramatic opener
On the pitch, the match delivered the drama fans expect from Liverpool. Hugo Ekitike made an immediate impact on his league debut, opening the scoring in the 37th minute, with Cody Gakpo doubling the lead shortly after the interval. Bournemouth, however, refused to fold. Antoine Semenyo pulled one back in the 64th minute and completed his brace twelve minutes later, briefly unsettling the home crowd and giving the visitors hope.
Liverpool's response came from the bench, as Federico Chiesa struck in the 88th minute to give Liverpool the lead again.
A fourth, which all but ensured Liverpool's win, arrived in stoppage time when Salah, chasing a loose ball past the defence, cut inside and slotted it into the bottom corner, completing a dramatic finish. His 94th-minute strike not only sealed the win but also saw the Egyptian join Andy Cole in fourth place on the all-time Premier League scorers' list with 187 goals. Overcome with emotion, Salah pointed to the heavens and mimicked Jota's iconic goal celebration.

Premier League: Tijjani Reijnders sizzles on Manchester City debut; Tottenham and Sunderland pick up wins

Manchester City began their campaign in emphatic fashion, crushing Wolves 4-0 at Molineux on Saturday, as newcomers Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki made instant impacts. Reijnders, a summer signing from AC Milan, was involved in three of the goals, showcasing the creativity Pep Guardiola wanted in order to replace Kevin De Bruyne. France international Cherki added the finishing touch, curling home from distance soon after coming on as a substitute. Tottenham also impressed, easing past Burnley 3-0 at home. Richarlison struck twice, both set up by Mohammed Kudus from the right flank, including a spectacular scissor kick for his second. Brennan Johnson added a third from Pape Sarr's through ball to secure a comfortable win for last season's Europa League champions. At Villa Park, Newcastle failed to take advantage of their dominance in a goalless draw against Aston Villa. Without striker Alexander Isak, who continues to push for a move away, the visitors lacked a cutting edge. New signing Anthony Elanga looked lively, but Villa held firm despite being reduced to 10 men when Ezri Konsa was dismissed for denying a goalscoring chance. Promoted Sunderland stunned West Ham with a 3-0 victory at home. Eliezer Mayenda and Dan Ballard both scored headers in the second half before Wilson Isidor sealed the result in stoppage time. Brighton looked set for three points when Matt O'Riley converted a penalty in the 55th minute after Sander Berge fouled Georginio Rutter. Earlier in the day, the Premier League held moments of silence and applause across grounds in memory of Diogo Jota, the former Liverpool and Wolves forward who recently died in a car crash alongside his brother. German Super Cup: Bayern Munich Edge Past Stuttgart as Harry Kane, Luis Diaz Strike

Last Updated: Kane put Bayern in front before Diaz added to the scoreboard in the 77th minute of the fixture, as Jamie Leweling's goal for Stuttgart proved nothing more than a consolation. German champions Bayern Munich registered a 2-1 triumph over Stuttgart on Saturday in the final of the German Super Cup at the MHPArena in Stuttgart to clinch their 10th title in the competition. The season's curtain raiser between the league and cup winners was renamed in honour of the legendary German skipper Franz Beckenbauer. Harry Kane put the Bundesliga champions in front before Luis Diaz added to the scoreboard in the 77th minute of the fixture, as Jamie Leweling's late strike for Stuttgart proved nothing more than a consolation. 'We wanted to show everyone that we're here. Wins and titles are not a given — we have to appreciate them," Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich said following the win. Kane also lauded the impact newcomer Diaz has had on the side since his arrival from Premier League champions Liverpool in the ongoing transfer window. 'I think you can see what he brings 1v1," Kane said, terming the Colombia winger was really sharp, and agile. 'I think it's important, especially in this modern football, for the winners to be scoring hopefully 15-20 goals a season," the Englishman added 'The goal was a great run, a great finish. Scoring your first competitive game for a new club is great and for it to be the winning goal is a perfect start for him," the forward said. Diaz paid tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota after opening his account in the German top-flight. 'Luis obviously played with him and knew him well. I think the whole football world comes together in moments like that," the star striker said. 'It was a nice tribute to him and his family and his brother. That whole situation obviously is a sad situation. The more we can come together and show our love, I think the better," he concluded. Location : Germany First Published:
