Former IndusInd Bank CEO Sumant Kathpalia has proposed a Rs 5.21 crore settlement to the SEBI to resolve an insider trading case
Former IndusInd Bank CEO Sumant Kathpalia has proposed a Rs 5.21 crore settlement to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to resolve an insider trading case, according to a report by The Economic Times.
SEBI's settlement mechanism allows individuals accused of regulatory violations to resolve matters without admitting or denying wrongdoing, by paying a settlement amount.
In May, SEBI had barred Kathpalia and four other senior IndusInd Bank officials from accessing the securities markets over alleged insider trading. The regulator also impounded Rs 19.78 crore from the five individuals, as per its interim order.
The others named in the order include Arun Khurana (Executive Director and Deputy CEO at the time), Sushant Sourav (Head of Treasury Operations), Rohan Jathanna (Head of GMG Operations), and Anil Marco Rao (CAO – Consumer Banking Operations).
The case is linked to a directive issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that had material implications for the bank's operations. SEBI's probe found that the executives used confidential information derived from internal assessments of the RBI circular to execute trades before it became public.
'All the Noticees… are hereby restrained from buying, selling or dealing in securities, either directly or indirectly, in any manner whatsoever, until further orders," SEBI said in its interim ruling.

Thane MACT Awards ₹87 Lakh Compensation in 2015 Road Accident Death

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The tribunal, presided over by Member R.V. Mohite, held the driver of a tempo solely responsible for the mishap. The accident occurred on July 31, 2015, near Sunita Apartment in Ulhasnagar-3, when the teacher was riding his motorcycle. According to case records, a tempo driver suddenly opened the vehicle door, causing the motorcyclist to crash into it. The victim suffered a severe head injury and remained in a coma for nearly a year before passing away on July 31, 2016. The tribunal relied on various pieces of evidence, including the FIR, spot panchanama, medical records, and crucial CCTV footage, which was presented in court by the investigating officer. Although the registration numbers and identity were not clearly visible in the footage, the tribunal accepted corroborative statements, including that of the tempo owner, who confirmed the vehicle and driver involved. The tribunal rejected objections raised by the insurer, which challenged the admissibility of the CCTV footage and raised concerns about an alleged policy breach. Member of MACT, Mohite, ruled that strict evidentiary rules under BNS do not apply to claims under the Motor Vehicles Act, and there was no evidence of footage tampering. The court also dismissed the claim of a licensing issue, confirming there was no breach of the insurance policy. The deceased was a permanent teacher at a Ulhasnagar municipal school, earning Rs 63,594 per month. The court considered his income, age, and number of dependents to compute compensation. The tribunal directed the tempo owner and insurer to jointly and severally pay the total amount with 9% annual interest from the date of petition filing until full payment. The compensation will be distributed among the widow and two adult children of the deceased, with part of the amount to be invested in fixed deposits in nationalised banks.

CM: Submit revised estimated cost for Barapullah elevated road project

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta has asked the public works department to submit the revised estimated cost for the Barapullah elevated road project to get it approved by lieutenant governor VK Saxena. The department has already spent nearly Rs 1,239 crore on the project against the sanctioned amount of Rs 1,260 crore, while a portion of the road measuring 690 metres is yet to be built. The overall cost of the 3.5-km road, connecting Sarai Kale Khan in the west of the Yamuna with Mayur Vihar in the east, is expected to exceed the sanctioned amount. The additional chief secretary of the finance department observed at the meeting of the expenditure and finance committee last week that approval was being sought only for the arbitration award of Rs 175 crore, due to the delay in completing the project. It added that PWD should issue instructions to the executing agency to expedite and complete the project within the stipulated time frame. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like See Results for Car Selling Sites Search Now Undo Phase III of the Barapullah elevated road was approved by the then LG on Dec 12, 2014, and an amount of Rs 1,260.6 crore was sanctioned for it. Though the elevated road was to be completed by Oct 17, 2017, the project was delayed because govt failed to acquire a portion of land owned by private individuals. The case went into arbitration, leading to an award of Rs 120 crore in favour of the contractor. The amount eventually increased to Rs 175 crore, with interest and goods and services tax added to it. To enforce the award, the contractor filed a petition in Delhi High Court . Following the court's directions, PWD paid an amount of Rs 170 crore to the contractor. Gupta has asked the department to seek legal opinion on whether the arbitration order can be challenged now. The committee also deliberated that an inquiry was needed to ascertain the loss to the govt exchequer due to payment of arbitration awards without seeking the opinion of the law department and fixing responsibility for the erring officials. The chief minister last week ordered an inquiry by the anti-corruption branch for approval and acceptance of arbitration awards by authorities "not competent to accept" and delay in execution of the project.
