Police, Maoists exchange fire
Tension prevailed in the interior forest region of Koyyuru mandal after these two separate encounters between police forces and armed Maoists.
The exchange of fire occurred during combing operations carried out by district special forces, acting on specific intelligence regarding the Maoist movement in the area.
According to officials, the operations were launched on April 27 following credible inputs, under the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, ASR District, and supervision of the Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Rampachodavaram.
The first exchange of fire took place at around 10:30 am near Kakulamamidi village in Chintapalli Sub-Division. Police forces came under fire from a group of approximately 15 Maoists dressed in olive-green uniforms. In self-defense, the police retaliated, prompting the Maoists to flee, abandoning weapons and supplies.
A second encounter occurred at approximately 2:30 pm the same day near Kantavaram village, where the fleeing Maoists again opened fire before escaping into the forest.
Following the fire exchanges, police recovered significant items left behind by the Maoists, including an SLR magazine with ammunition, advanced communication devices, a Kindle tablet, Maoist literature, clothing, medical supplies, including syringes, kit bags, tarpaulins, cooked food, and other logistical materials.
SP Amit Bardar has appealed to the public to come forward with any reliable information on Maoist activity in the region. -He also called members of Maoist groups to surrender, assuring full support for their rehabilitation and reintegration into mainstream society.

(HT PHOTO) One of the judges who passed that order, B Sudershan Reddy, 79, was on Tuesday named by the INDIA bloc of Opposition parties, in which the Congress is the largest constituent (by MPs), as its vice presidential candidate. That was one of the last orders of Reddy in the Supreme Court, where he was a judge between 2007 and 2011. An expert on the Constitution –– he has written a book on the Preamble –– and an admirer of both BR Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru, Reddy was born in an agricultural family on July 8, 1946 at Akula Mylaram village of Kandukur block in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana (then part of the princely state of Hyderabad). Reddy graduated in law from Osmania University in Hyderabad in 1971. He enrolled as an advocate and worked under senior advocate K Pratap Reddy. Having argued various cases in city civil courts in Hyderabad and later in the then combined high court of Andhra Pradesh, Reddy later became the government pleader on August 8, 1988 in the high court, arguing cases pertaining to the revenue department. He continued in the post till January 8, 1990. Reddy was elected as president of Andhra Pradesh high court advocates' association in 1993-94. He was elevated as the additional judge of the high court on May 2, 1995. And he was appointed as chief justice for Gauhati high court on December 5, 2005. On January 12, 2007, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India; he retired on July 8, 2011. Among his notable verdicts was one declaring Salwa Judum, a local militia propped up by the state government in Chhattisgarh to fight Maoists, as anti-constitutional. Along with justice SS Nijjar, he said arming civilians was 'unethical and dangerous' and was violative of Article 14 (Right to Equality) and Article 21 (Right to Life). After his retirement, he was appointed as the first Lokayukta of Goa in March 2013. He resigned from the post on personal grounds in October 2013. A staunch supporter of formation of separate Telangana, Reddy was an active participant in various movements in support of bifurcation. He also raised his voice in support of bifurcation of the combined Andhra Pradesh high court. Madabhushi Sridhar Acharyulu, former Central Information Commissioner, who has known Reddy for over three decades by virtue of his legal profession, having worked as a professor at NALSAR University of Law, said that as a judge, Reddy was deeply committed to the rule of law and he has dedicated his life to upholding constitutional values in the Indian democratic framework. 'Some judges have etched their names in history through their unwavering integrity, distinctive vision, and faith in democratic principles — justice B Sudarshan Reddy is one among them.'

4 Maoists lay down arms in Kondagaon
Raipur: Four Maoists including a couple, surrendered before police in Kondagaon district of Bastar division in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. They carried a combined bounty of Rs 22 lakh. Police officials said the surrendered cadres include Laxman Koram alias Junnu and Sakharam worth Rs 8 lakh bounty each, Koram's wife Maddo alias Zarina carrying cash reward of Rs 5 lakh, and Panduram, Rs one lakh. All four were active in Kondagaon, Kanker, Bastar, Dantewada and Manpur-Mohla regions, and were allegedly involved in incidents of firing on security forces, murders of civilians, loot, IED blasts, arson, and destruction of govt property. According to police, sustained operations by security forces, rising internal differences within the Maoist organisation, and the desire to rejoin mainstream society led to the surrender. Each surrendered Maoist was given an immediate incentive of Rs 50,000 under the Chhattisgarh surrendered Naxal rehabilitation policy, with further rehabilitation benefits to follow. The surrender ceremony was held at office of Kondagaon Superintendent of Police Y Akshay Kumar, in presence of senior officers, including CRPF Commandant Bhavesh Choudhary. Bastar range IG P Sundarraj said the success reflects the combined impact of sustained anti-Maoist operations, community policing, and effective communication of the state's surrender and rehabilitation policy. INDIA's Veep Pick Best Known For "Weakening Fight Against Naxalism": BJP Sources
Hitting out at the Congress and the INDIA bloc for picking B Sudershan Reddy as their nominee for the vice president polls, BJP sources have said the former Supreme Court judge is best remembered for "weakening India's fight against Naxalism" since he was part of a bench that had struck down Salwa Judum, a militia set up to combat Maoists in Chhattisgarh. The sources also said Mr Reddy was one of the judges on the bench that had refused to reopen the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy case in 2011 and reminded the party that it had termed him a "yes man" of the BJP chief minister when he was appointed the first Lokayukta of Goa in 2013. The Congress, the sources pointed out, had opposed former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi's nomination to the Rajya Sabha, saying it had disgraced the judiciary, but was now exposing its "hypocrisy" by fielding a former judge for elections to a Constitutional post. On Tuesday, the INDIA bloc announced, after several rounds of discussions, that it would field Mr Reddy as its candidate for the vice presidential elections against the NDA's choice, Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge described the contest as an ideological battle and said Mr Reddy is a distinguished and progressive jurist. "B Sudershan Reddy is one of India's most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career, including as Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and Judge of the Supreme Court. He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic, and political justice. His judgments show how he stood for the poor, protected the Constitution, and upheld fundamental rights," Mr Kharge said. Countering this assertion, the BJP sources said the opposition bloc has actually picked someone who "weakened India's fight against Naxalism" at a time when the movement is on the decline and the Modi government is making all efforts to eliminate it by March 31 next year. Mr Reddy was part of the bench that had, in 2011, said the deployment of tribal youth as Special Police Officers in the fight against Maoists was illegal and ordered that Salwa Judum and other such forces not be allowed to operate. "The State of Chhattisgarh shall forthwith make every effort to recall all firearms issued to any of the SPOs, whether current or former, along with any and all accoutrements and accessories issued to use such firearms. The word firearm as used shall include any and all forms of guns, rifles, launchers et cetera, of whatever calibre," the bench had said. The sources said this judgment had led to the fight against Naxalism taking a hit. Mr Reddy, they said, was also on the five-judge bench that had refused to reopen the case into the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 2011. BJP leaders have earlier accused the Congress of helping Union Carbide chairman Warren Anderson flee the country in 1984. The Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, the sources said, had also taken out a black flag protest against the appointment of Mr Reddy as the first Lokayukta of Goa, dismissing him as the "yes man" of then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar of the BJP "But, in 2025, the same Congress-led INDIA bloc has now fielded the very same person as their vice presidential candidate, hailing him as a 'champion of social and political justice'," said a source.
